Snapchat Geofilter: Geofilters are location-based overlays that users can apply to their Snaps. The overlays generally feature the names of the locations where the Snap is taken.
Well, it was fun while it lasted. Hulu is shutting down the free, ad-supported version of its service. The company will now offer only its two subscription tiers: An ad-free plan for $11.99 per month, and a $7.99 per month plan with limited commercials. But at the same time, Hulu is expanding its distribution deal with Yahoo. Under the expanded deal, Yahoo will launch Yahoo View, an ad-supported streaming site that will carry the five most recent episodes of shows from Hulu co-owners Fox, NBC, and ABC. Hulu’s new moves come less than one week after Time Warner announced that it would acquire a 10% stake in the service.
NBCUniversal has reached a new multi-year deal with Snapchat. NBCU will create original episodic shows for the app. To start, the new shows will be offshoots of series including The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Voice, and Saturday Night Live. For The Voice, for example, NBCU will produce a Snapchat series – debuting August 22 – featuring the show’s singing coaches and user-submitted videos. (Talented fans who submit videos will even get the chance to appear on The Voice’s September 19 linear premiere.) And on September 8, NBCU’s E! News will launch The Rundown, a weekly Snapchat series hosted by E! News correspondent Erin Lim. Under the deal, NBCU will develop and sell ad packages that incorporate Snapchat’s ad products.
Goldman Sachs’ Private Capital Investing Group has invested $50 million in the OTT video technology provider Kaltura. Kaltura, which was founded in 2006, has raised about $110 million to date. The company also announced that Holger Staude, a VP from Goldman Sachs’ Private capital Investing Group, will be taking a spot on Kaltura’s Board of Directors. Kaltura’s clients include the likes of Viacom, HBO, ABC, and others.
The kid-friendly Canadian SVOD service Ameba TV will join Amazon’s Streaming Partners Program. Amazon launched the Streaming Partners Program last year. The offering enables Amazon customers to add numerous other subscription services to their Amazon accounts.

As first reported by Android Police, Pokemon Go has surpassed 100 million downloads on Google Play. The augmented reality gaming app has only been available in the Play Store for about a month.
As part of its partnership with The Walt Disney Studios, Nokia has launched a new 360-degree video experience in support of the new film Pete’s Dragon. The experience, called Pete’s Dragon: Elliot’s Flyover, was shot on location in New Zealand. You can watch it here.
Twitch isn’t just for gamers anymore. For instance, the Amazon-owned streaming site has featured classic content from the likes of Julia Child and Bob Ross. Now Amazon Video will be bringing three of its series pilots to the site. The pilots, which include The Tick and the comedy I Love Dick, will first debut on Prime Video on August 19. Then they’ll stream on Twitch for a total of 24 hours on August 31. Amazon’s long-running M.O. is to pick up full series orders only if pilots are received well by viewers.
No U.S. election is truly nationalized, at least not procedurally. Rather, voting procedures are decided at the state and local level. And as a result, voting logistics vary throughout the country. That’s why YouTube star Hank Green has launched a new 54-part video series instructing viewers on how vote in each state (and in the District of Columbia) come November. Green’s vlogbrothers channel, which he launched with his brother John Green, boasts close to 3 million subscribers.
The MDC-owned agency Assembly has made a couple of new hires. Patrick Bevilacqua will serve as SVP of Programmatic and Data Strategy. He previously worked as SVP of Trading Operations, Americas at Xaxis. And Tara Sadlak will serve as VP of Digital Investment. Sadlak previously worked served as Digital Lead at Vizeum NY. Sadlak and Bevilacqua will both report to Chief Digital Officer Jeff Liang, who himself joined the company in May.
Discovery Digital networks, the web-native content offering of Discovery Communications, has named Bernard Ho as VP of Partnerships and Development. Ho will oversee partnership development and implementation across platforms. DDN’s platforms include Seeker, SourceFed, and The Philip DeFranco Show. Ho most recently served as Senior Director of Business Development at Samsung Electronics.
