British actor/comedian James Corden is in serious contention for Craig Ferguson‘s job as host of CBS‘s The Late Late Show, according to sources. No stranger to performing in front of an audience, Corden won a 2012 Tony for his performance in One Man, Two Guvnors. Ferguson announced in April that he’d be leaving his late night hosting gig when his contract expires in December; The Wrap was first to post the news of his possible replacement.

IN THE NEWS

As far as the Golden Globes are concerned, a mini-series (now called limited series) is any show with plot and characters confined to one season, no matter how many episodes air, per a Hollywood Foreign Press Association rules revision. The distinction has been an issue for HBO‘s True Detective, up for an Emmy in the Outstanding drama category despite a complete overhaul in cast and storyline season to season. Deadline for submissions for the 2015 Globes is October 31; nominations will be announced December 11. Show airs Sunday, January 11 on NBC.

USA Today owner Gannett announced Tuesday it is separating its broadcasting and digital business from its publishing division, creating two publicly traded companies next year. The move is part of an initiative to "increase shareholder value by building scale, increasing cash flow, sharpening management focus, and strengthening all of our businesses to compete effectively in today’s increasingly digital landscape," said Gannett CEO Gracia Martore. Time Warner Inc., Tribune Media and E.W. Scripps and Journal Communications have also spun off or announced plans to spin off print operations recently, splitting faster-growing digital and broadcast from publishing businesses.

Never mind, said Rupert Murdoch, withdrawing 21st Century Fox‘s $80 billion takeover bid for Time Warner. "The reaction in our share price since our proposal was made undervalues our stock and makes the transaction unattractive to Fox shareholders," said Murdoch.

Janeane Garofalo is leaving Bravo series Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce, currently in production for a Tuesday, December 2 debut, reports TVLine. Garofalo is expected to continue shooting through October.

Animal Planet, the lead media sponsor of the third-annual Internet Cat Video Festival, is live streaming the event globally at AnimalPlanet.com/CatVidFest.

The Paley Center for Media celebrates the 35th anniversary of sitcom Facts of Life (1979-1988) with a reunion event September 15, following its Fall TV Preview screenings starting September 6 in New York and Los Angeles.

The season two premiere of Oxygen‘s Preachers of L.A. will get the big screen treatment at select AMC Theatres on Tuesday, August 12 at 7p, with cast members on hand in Atlanta and Dallas for Q&A sessions with the audience. Show premieres on TV Wednesday, August 20 at 10p.

RETURNING SHOWS

E! is going for more plastic surgery. Docu-series Botched, averaging 1.54 million total viewers and nearly 1 million among A18-49 on Sunday nights, has been picked up for a sophomore run. Season one ends August 17 at 10:30p.

Intervention, canceled last year after 13 seasons by A&E, has been revived on sister net LMN, said the Hollywood Reporter. LMN ordered 15 eps from GRB Entertainment to premiere in early 2015.

BRANDS & ADVERTISING

HGTV shows filled three of top five spots in cable commercial retention in a survey of TiVo users. January-June data had the lifestyle net’s House Hunters International and Caribbean Life at 84 percent retention, and Love it or List It at 83 percent. Discovery‘s Gold Rush: Pay Dirt was a close fifth with 82 percent. Rounding out the list? TBS‘s Bam’s Bad Ass, with 84 percent. Why does HGTV rate so high? "Since HGTV fans do what they view, they are highly engaged with the entire environment, content and breaks," Jon Steinlauf, EVP for ad sales & marketing, Scripps Networks Interactive, tells Cynopsis. "We inspire them with ideas, and then they shop the ads."

RB and Facebook have signed a multi-year global partnership deal that will integrate their sales and marketing teams, reports MediaPost. "RB wants to partner with Facebook to help us connect with our customers and to grow our business in several countries around the world," said an RB spokesperson. RB brands include Lysol, Woolite and Clearasil.

CASTING

MTV’s Scream will star Willa Fitzgerald (Alpha House), Amy Forsyth (Reign), John Karna (The Neighbors) and Carlson Young (Key & Peele). Show was picked up to pilot in April 2013.

Avan Jogia (Twisted) won the role of King Tutankhamun in Spike TV event series Tut, debuting in 2015. Ben Kingsley (Ghandi) stars as the Grand Vizier.

DISTRIBUTION & CARRIAGE

DISH and A+E Networks struck a multi-year contract renewal for A+E’s entire portfolio that includes OTT multi-stream rights for live and VOD content, and expands distribution of H2 and FYI in the America’s Top 200 programming package.
