MORE TALK AT TCA

Bob Greenblatt, NBC Chairman, shared big news about the Will & Grace revival: The show has already been renewed for a second season. Asked how W&G can ignore the original series finale, in which the main characters went on to have separate lives and children, Greenblatt told critics, “I don’t’ think you want to see them with aging children. We love the essence of the old show, and there’s clever ways about why they’re still living together.”

NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke addressed the cancellation of the critically acclaimed The Carmichael Show. “It was hard to find a stable audience,” said Salke, adding that the network loved the series and the cast from the start. “Everyone was hoping the show would perform and grow. We saw a great stable audience slowly building with critical attention, but it remained in a challenging situation. We looked at the show with Jerrod [and asked], What’s the long-term plan? Is there a chance for real big success? Maybe it’s best to let the show end.”

Dick Wolf was eager to discuss Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders. “This is unique for me, after 27 years of Law & Order,” said Wolf. “This is taken from the headlines. We’ve made some great shows ripped from the headlines, but this is on a different level.”

NBC also announced it was supercharging its inclusion efforts with Female Forward, a new annual initiative focused on female directors and a commitment to work toward gender parity among scripted directors across the network. Spearheaded by Jennifer Salke in a partnership with director Lesli Linka Glatter (Mad Men), it will give 10 female directors the opportunity to shadow up to three episodes of an NBC series, culminating in an in-season commitment to direct at least one episode of that series. “It’s been a collective and urgent goal of ours to identify more female directors,” said Salke. “We strongly believe women can and should be at the forefront of telling compelling stories, and I hope the guaranteed directing component will have real impact on our shows as well as the industry.”
