08/01/17: LA thinks 28 is great; NBC gives NHL 99; Bears do ecommerce deep dive

Good morning. It’s Tuesday August 1, 2017 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

2028, here we come. Los Angeles will play host to the 2028 Summer Games, with officials reaching a deal with the IOC that would help “generate hundreds of millions in savings and additional revenues,” with the move, according to the LA Times. That decision makes Paris home to the event in 2024 and mark the third time that Southern California would play host. IOC members still must formally vote on the deal for it to be official.
“The IOC welcomes this decision of the Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Candidature Committee. and we are pleased to release the Host City contract 2028 in a transparent and timely manner,” said IOC President Thomas Bach. “Los Angeles presented an excellent candidature that embraces the Olympic Agenda 2020 sustainability priorities by maximizing the use of existing facilities and encouraging the engagement of more youth in the Olympic Movement. Therefore, we are very happy that, as part of this Host City Contract, we are able to increase the access of the city’s youth to sport, and encourage the healthy lifestyle of Angelenos for the next 11 years. We are very confident that we can reach a tripartite agreement under the leadership of the IOC with LA and Paris in August, creating a win-win-win situation for all three partners. This agreement will be put forward to the IOC Session in Lima in September for ratification.”

NBC Sports locked in its NHL scheduling plans for the new season, lining up 99 regular-season games during the upcoming season, beginning Oct. 4 at 8p on NBCSN with Blues/Penguins. Overall, NBCSN opens the first week of the season with seven games on deck, including the Red Wings’ first-ever regular-season home game at Little Caesars Arena vs. the Wild on Oct. 5; the Vegas Golden Knights’ first-ever home game vs. the Coyotes on Oct. 10; and a Wednesday Night Rivalry clash between the Penguins/Capitals on Oct. 11. The 2017-18 regular season on NBCSN will feature 23 Wednesday Night Rivalry telecasts, plus five Wednesday Nightcaps and five Sunday Night Hockey exclusive games.NHL on NBC coverage begins on Nov. 24, at 1p with the 2017 Discover NHL Thanksgiving Showdown.
Speaking of NBC Sports, the company kicks off the NFL’s 2017 preseason schedule with the Hall of Fame Game on Thursday at 8p with the Cowboys/Cardinals. Al Michaels once again handles play-by-play with Cris Collinsworth and sideline reporter Michele Tafoya. Thursday’s telecast will also feature live interviews with all members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2017, including Cowboys owner, president and general manager Jerry Jones and Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner.

ESPN2 serves up the NBA Africa Game 2017 live on Saturday at 11a from Johannesburg, South Africa. Kevin Connors will provide commentary on ESPN2, alongside analyst Doris Burke. For ESPN Deportes, Robert Abramowitz and Roger Valdivieso will provide commentary and feature a Team Africa versus Team World format.

NBC Sports announced that 10 NFL players will join Carrie Underwood for her performance of “Oh, Sunday Night,” this season for the opening theme of Sunday Night Football. A preview of the new show open will air during the 49ers/Vikings NFL preseason game on Aug. 27 at 8p. This year’s players include: Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown; Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr; New England Patriots LB Dont’a Hightower; Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce; Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones; Oakland Raiders LB Khalil Mack; Denver Broncos LB Von Miller; Arizona Cardinals CB Patrick Peterson; New York Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul and Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott.
MP & Silva signed a multi-year partnership agreement with Baral LLC allowing both companies to jointly exploit the media and sponsorship rights of several clubs of Liga Ascenso, including clubs such as Cafeteros de Tapachula, Venados De Mérida, Dorados de Culiacan, Club Atlétic Zacatepec, Potros de UAEM among others. The scope of the agreement covers all media rights platforms for the US territory with MP & Silva and Baral Group collaborating to obtain sponsorship deals.
Reebok announced partnerships with NFL athletes Brandin Cooks and Devonta Freeman in support of Reebok’s new Print Run Ultraknit shoe. The two join Reebok ambassadors that include J.J Watt, Aly Raisman and Gigi Hadid.
Van Wagner Sports and Entertainment and Samford University athletics struck a long-term partnership naming VWSE as the athletics department’s exclusive multimedia rights partner and sales agent for the department’s corporate sponsorship program. Tthe VWSE Collegiate Services division will oversee the locally based operation, Samford Sponsorships, which will work with university leadership to enhance the overall gameday experience and create unique opportunities for the program’s sponsors, business partners and a growing and dedicated Bulldogs fan base.

Lucktastic announced a new license with the Major League Baseball Players Association in a deal that will see new baseball player themed MLBPA Fun Packs released each week for the remainder of the 2017 baseball season. Each Fun Pack will and give Lucktastic fans the opportunity to win a variety of personalized and autographed merchandise. “We are always looking for fun and innovative ways to showcase some of the game’s best and brightest stars,” said Tim Slavin from the Major League Baseball Players Association. “Together with Lucktastic, we’re releasing a program we know the fans will love.”

The International 7 has its lineup locked in for the group stage of the Dota 2 behemoth as teams prepare for battle starting Wednesday. The group stage will begin at 9:30a PT with Series A1, with B1 slated for noon, A2 at 2:30p and B2 at 5p. A3 is currently slated to begin at 7:30p. The format sees eighteen participants fighting for one of the final 16 spots into the TI 7 main event as well as seeding with the last placed team in each group eliminated from contention without any prize pool share. The Main Event will then take place at KeyArena in Seattle starting Monday and run through Aug. 12.

WWE announced that John Brody, who has been overseeing WWE’s global sales team since 2015, will take on duties for WWE’s International division under the purview of Michelle Wilson, WWE Chief Revenue & Marketing Officer. Effective immediately, Brody’s new title will be Executive Vice President, Global Sales & Head of International.
