PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
 
Imagine Television Studios and CBS Corp. entered into a 4-year co-financing and first look agreement for scripted and unscripted television and long-form digital programming. CBS platforms will have first look at new Imagine Television series, with CBS Television Studios serving as a production partner and worldwide distributor for programming produced as part of the agreement. “This agreement aligns our broadcast, pay cable and streaming businesses with a best-in-class partner, and represents another strategic opportunity to own and distribute more content across a dynamic television landscape,” said CBS Corp. chairman and CEO Les Moonves.
 
Starz is developing half-hour drama series, Sweetbitter, based on the bestseller by Stephanie Danler about a 22-year-old transplant navigating the chaotic world of NYC. Plan B Entertainment tapped Stu Zicherman (The Americans) to develop the script with Danler; both will serve as executive producers along with Plan B. 
 
Marty Adelstein is partnering with Shueisha to develop One Piece, the best-selling Japanese comic series, for a live action television series. The adaptation will be executive produced  by One Piece publisher Shueisha and author Eiichiro Oda, alongside Adelstein (Good Behavior) and Becky Clements (Good Behavior) through Tomorrow Studios.
 
Hidden camera prank show Scare Tactics is being revived by Blumhouse Television and producer Scott Hallock, reports Variety. The series ran for 5 seasons between 2003 and 2012 on Syfy.
 
Blockchain Entertainment has partnered with content innovator Ignition Creative to develop and produce the first season of unscripted docu-series Capitol Makeover: Bitcoin Brigade, following AML Bitcoin creator Marcus Andrade and his team of “currency nerds.”

“Welcome to the high velocity world of political news,” said PBS VP, news & public affairs Marie Nelson, as word broke that Anthony Scaramucci was out as White House Communications Director. “You think you’re the only ones covering drama, right?” Robert Costa, moderator of PBS’s Washington Week, joked to critics. “We’re waiting for this [panel] and the Mooch is out!”
 
Queen Victoria, subject of PBS Masterpiece series Victoria, was a woman “desperately in need of contraception,” said the show’s creator and writer Daisy Goodwin at the Television Critics Association summer tour. The mother of 9 “really wanted to be with her handsome husband; she loves going to bed with him but hates the result,” said Goodwin. Heading into season 2, there’s a “real strain” on her marriage to Prince Albert, as well as “many more parallels with [Brexit] than one would expect.”
 
PBS Kids announced the return of curious canine Ruff Ruffman with a new short-form animated digital series, The Ruff Ruffman Show, debuting Thursday, September 28.
 
Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries will offer a record 33 new holiday movies during their Christmas events, running from Friday, October 27-Monday, January 1. Hallmark’s “Countdown to Christmas” preview special will be hosted by Candace Cameron Bure (Fuller House) while singer Jewel hosts HM&M’s “Most Wonderful Movies of Christmas” sneak peek.
 
In more Crown Media news, Hallmark Movies & Mysteries inked a development deal with Al Roker for a movie based on the weather expert’s novel, The Midnight Show Murders: A Billy Blessing Novel. Holly Robinson Peete (21 Jump Street) will star in the film, set to premiere in 2018…. Hallmark Movies & Mysteries also struck a development deal with strategist and crisis communications specialist Judy Smith for a movie, The Adjuster, loosely based on her real-life experiences.
 
Many happy returns: Hallmark Channel renewed Good Witch for season 4, after recently concluded season 3 averaged a 2.6HH rating and over 2.8 million viewers in Live+3 Nielsens….When Calls the Heart will return to Hallmark Channel for season 5 with a two-hour sneak peek during “Countdown to Christmas,” before launching in February 2018….and Hallmark Channel lifestyle series Home & Family was renewed for season 6.
 
 
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
 
MTV is reviving Total Request Live (aka TRL), the 1998-2008 music show. A “centerpiece” studio is under construction in Times Square, net president Chris McCarthy told the New York Times, with launch slated for October. Host Carson Daly will not be back for the revamp; the series will have rotating hosts. McCarthy also told the Times the Moon Man trophy at the MTV Video Music Awards will now be known as Moon Person. VMAs air Sunday, August 27.
 
SundanceTV is introducing limited series Top of the Lake: China Girl as a 3-night special event starting Sunday, September 10 and continuing Monday, September 11 and Tuesday, September 12, with an encore presentation immediately following each night.
 
On Wednesday, September 27 at 10p, SundanceTV is premiering psychological thriller Liar, and 4-hour docu-series Cold Blooded: The Clutter Family Murders airs as a two-night special event Saturday, November 18 and Sunday, November 19, anchoring a weekend-long “True Crime Movie Marathon.”

National CineMedia picked up box office prediction game Fantasy Movie League, the company’s first acquisition as part of a focus on consumer digital products for movie audiences. The game will be featured on NCM’s Noovie cinema pre-show, launching at the end of September.
 
Sundance Now announced a new 6-part scripted original co-production, Back, created and written by Simon Blackwell (Veep). Comedy premieres in fall 2017 and will debut on SundanceTV later in 2018. The streaming service also acquired 10-part thriller Riviera, starring Julia Stiles, and miniseries Rillington Place, starring Samantha Morton and Tim Roth. Riviera is set to launch Thursday, September 14; Rillington Place starts streaming Thursday, November 9.

The newsmag is slated to return in the spring. CBS’s Big Brother was the highest-rated and most-watched show of the night, with 1.8/8 in the demo and 6.37 million viewers.
 
Telemundo is projected to close July as the #3 broadcast network, regardless of language, among A18-34, with 337,000 in the demo, according to Nielsen.
