IN THE NEWS

Legendary game show host and animal rights advocate Bob Barker died at age 99. Best known for his 35-year run on “The Price Is Right,” which lasted until his retirement in 2007, Barker also hosted “Truth or Consequences” from 1956-1975. “Very sad day for the Price Is Right family, and animal lovers all over the world,” posted the current host of “The Price Is Right,” Drew Carey, on X. “There hasn’t been a day on set that I didn’t think of Bob Barker and thank him.”

Disney+ has canceled “Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.” after two seasons. The medical dramedy from Kourtney Kang (“Fresh Off the Boat”) was a reboot of “Doogie Howser, M.D.” (1989-93).

Fox News is seeking to dismiss an Arizona man’s defamation suit over January 6 comments. In a lawsuit filed last month, Ray Epps, a Marine veteran, said he was defamed by commentary on the network that implied he was acting as a government agent when he participated in the January 6 insurrection. The network argued, “Even if Fox hosts implied a factual conclusion about Plaintiff, it reflected only their interpretations based on disclosed facts,” noting that the comments were made on opinion programs.

Bring it on, say Bravo and NBCUniversal. After NBCU received letters from lawyers representing reality stars and crew accusing the company of imposing “unlawful” NDAs to “hide criminal and civil wrongs” on reality shows, a Bravo spokesperson issued a statement rejecting the characterization. “Confidentiality clauses are standard practice in reality programming to prevent disclosure of storylines prior to air. They are not intended to prevent disclosure by cast and crew of unlawful acts in the workplace, and they have not been enforced in that manner,” said the rep. “To be clear, any current or former cast or crew is free to discuss and disclose any allegedly unlawful acts in the workplace, such as harassment or discrimination, or any other conduct they have reason to believe is inappropriate.” The spokesperson added Bravo is working with production companies to encourage cast and crew to report any concerns.

Will Amazon make a deal with Disney for an ESPN streaming partnership? The companies are reportedly in early talks about the possibility of sharing the service through one of Amazon’s streaming offerings, with Amazon taking a minority stake in ESPN. Disney CEO Bob Iger said last month that Disney is open to selling part of ESPN.

STRIKE UPDATES

The writers’ strike is still on, but late night and comedy variety writers have landed a win. The WGA and AMPTP have agreed to apply MBA (minimum basic agreement) minimums to comedy variety programs made for new media. The terms do not cover game show or daytime writers, making them “insufficient,” said the WGA.

Don’t get in a war of words with writers. That could be the lesson learned by the AMPTP, who Deadline reports has hired crisis management specialists the Levinson Group to reset the studios’ messaging.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Disney has pulled the plug on its adaptation of YA book series The Spiderwick Chronicles, announced in 2021 for Disney+, and already filmed. The project from Paramount Television and 20th Television was scrapped as part of Disney’s previously announced cost-cutting content write-off, reports Deadline.

MagellanTV is doubling down on nature content with “Wild Arabia.” The documentary streamer unveiled the new original feature from TV presenter and conservationist Nigel Marven, marking the streamer’s second collaboration with Marven (following the 2023 release “Wild El Salvador: In the Shadow of the Volcanoes”). “Wild Arabia” is currently in production and will debut in 2024.

BIG TV Q&A

The speed of change in the media industry is exciting – and in some cases “more than a little scary,” says Ed McElvain, Mediahub’s EVP, Director of P3 (digital platforms and data-driven media buying). McElvain, who will be speaking at the Cynopsis Big TV Conference next month on a panel about attention measurement, offers a preview of that conversation.

What are brands’ expectations now regarding measurement? How do you anticipate that changing over the next year?
Brands always want to be able to prove ROI by linking media exposure to business outcomes. This will not change but the methods for doing so are becoming more challenging with the proliferation of media choices, walled gardens ecosystems, and privacy restrictions in tracking.

What are new strategies Mediahub has employed that have been successful?
We are focused on identifying durable data that provide strategic advantage in the marketplace. We have developed tools that enable us to identify audiences to drive growth, understand how best to reach them, and then apply filters and algorithms to make sure we’re doing it in quality media for the right price. Specifically, Attention data has emerged as a key pillar of this layered strategy.

What about the media landscape is proving the most challenging right now?
There’s a lot of complexity and change happening, and fast. Privacy and AI in particular are really reshaping our industry. I’m optimistic that we will be a better, stronger industry because of these changes – especially if it moves us away from breaking consumer trust and bad attribution models. But the accelerating speed of change is challenging and it’s more than a little scary to embrace opaque AI models when we don’t really understand exactly how they work… they just do.
