08/22/19: Mastercard charges the Nexus; Activision maps CoD plans; Terminator has a Blast

is ringing up a deeper partnership with Riot Games, inking a deal to now become the exclusive category partner for League of Legends Championship Series in North America. The deal will see Mastercard now sponsor the LCS “Player of the Week Award (POTW)” and LCS Opening Ceremonies in Detroit while also “upgrading the overall on-site experience for fans by curating a wide range of Priceless experiences and exclusive cardholder benefits across onsite event activations, viaPriceless.com.” In addition, the duo will now launch “Together Start Something Priceless,” a League of Legends community driven content series that will showcase unique stories of League of Legends players around the world.
“This expanded relationship represents the continued growth in popularity of esports as well as the success of the global partnership between Mastercard and Riot Games,” said Cheryl Guerin, executive vice president of North America Marketing & Communications at Mastercard. “We are also excited through the ‘Together Start Something Priceless’ content series to not only demonstrate our support for this community, but also share some of the great stories and inspiring individuals we have encountered during our partnership.”


Activision confirmed two more city franchises for the upcoming iteration of its Call of Duty league, locking in both Florida as well as a second Los Angeles-based franchise.  Misfits Gaming, owner of the Florida Mayhem in the Overwatch League, will serve as owners and operators of the Florida squad. Meanwhile, Kroenke Sports and Entertainment, owner of the Overwatch League’s Los Angeles Gladiators, picked up the second Los Angeles-based franchise for the league. Kroenke joins Immortals Gaming Club once again in sharing the market. Other cities include confirmed include a Minnesota franchise, Atlanta, Dallas, New York, Paris, and Toronto. An official start date for the franchised Call of Duty league has yet to be announced.
Speaking of which, Activision firmed up expectations for its new CoD franchises, detailing rules and expectations for the new-look league. All teams must carry at least seven players on their rosters, the company announced on Reddit, and every player in the league must have a minimum salary of $50,000, with health care and retirement benefits. Teams will also be required to provide the players with at least 50 percent of their prize pool earnings. In addition, Activision said it will support Path to Pro events, which will be held online and offline with dedicated prize pools. Teams will have a small window to sign its current players to new contracts for next year’s league stating ug. 26, before opening the door for all teams will to negotiate and sign players, pending their contract status, starting Sept. 3.
Overwatch League revealed its new city-based schedule for the 2020 season, which marks the first time that every team will host matches in their home markets. Details on 2020 playoffs, Grand Finals and All-Star events will be revealed at a later date. Play begins on Feb. 8 next year, as half of the league’s teams head to New York for the Excelsior’s homestand while the other half visit Dallas for the Fuel’s homestand. The regular season ends on Aug. 9 with homestands by the Toronto Defiant and Los Angeles Valiant. One big change will apparently see the end of Thursday and Friday matchups, with all games on the schedule listed for Saturdays and Sundays.
ELEAGUE and Nintendo are exploring new worlds, courtesy of a partnership designed to showcase high-level players and competitive moments through a three-episode ELEAGUE television series focused on three tournaments held in Los Angeles last June and slated to air on CBS. ELEAGUE Presents The Nintendo 2019 World Championships will air Aug. 25 at 1p on the network, taking fans backstage and behind the controller with professional players as they compete across three Nintendo Switch video games; Super Mario Maker 2, Splatoon 2 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The series will feature teams from around the world including Japan, United States, Europe and Australia/New Zealand competing, with additional episodes set to run on Sept. 7, at 2p and Sept. 14 at 1:30p on CBS.
Konami is upping the ante on eFootball for PES 2020, offering a $2 million prize pool for the competition, which will see two tournaments, per Dot Esports, the eFootball.open and eFootball.pro. The e.Football.pro will showcase top pro players who will represent real clubs from Europe and compete against each other in the name of their club.
The World Showdown of Esports is teaming up with Method, a premier World of Warcraft esports organization, to produce the Classic Race to World First streaming 24/7 live from Aug. 26-Sept. 2. Play will take place at the PokerGO Studio at ARIA Resort and Casino in Las Vegas with fully interactive 24-hour coverage that will feature a mix of world-class speed levelers and content experts from the Classic WoW community, as well as some of the top WoW streamers on Twitch racing to achieve notable “firsts” in WoW Classic, which will be released in the US on Aug. 26.Participants in the Classic Race to World First will seek to be the first players to level their personal characters to Level 60, then attempt to lead their guilds comprised of players from around the world to be the first group of 40 players to defeat the legendary “end bosses” Ragnaros and Onyxia. Featured players include WoW legends Esfand and TipsOut, while thetalent desk will feature leading personalities Mike “Preach” Lamb, JB “Jdotb” Daniel, Sid “Supatease” Compton, Adam “Finalboss” Knych, Daniel Falcone, Daniel “MrGM” Carter, and Michael “Nano” Wilson.
The Pokemon Company locked in a venue and city for next year’s World Championship, announcing that London will play host in 2020, while Pokemon Sword and Shield will be the official competitive title.
The NBA 2K League Development Camp: Women in Gaming is underway at the NBA 2K League Studio in NYC, with AT&T serving as an official partner, bringing together 15 of the top female NBA 2K players to compete alongside and learn from NBA 2K League players and coaches, former WNBA player Taj McWilliams-Franklin, professional Counter-Strike: Global Offensive player Theia, and more.
Newly launched Player Omega detailed live event plans on Nov. 9-10 at the Fairplex in Pomona as its inaugural event with an eye to offer two days of open-bracket esports tournaments operated by their favorite leagues competing in all the top titles, free game play, cosplay, panel discussions, art installations, and more. Company founders are entertainment and esports entrepreneur Jon Bukosky (Ultimate Media Ventures), taking the role of CEO, and veteran esports executive Han Park (former president of ESL), serving as an advisor and executive board member. Rounding out the leadership team is Vans Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman as president, and chief operating officer John Greenberg. Additionally, further announcements are still to come about the expansion of Player Omega into a multi-city tour in 2020.
Super League Gaming announced a partnership with Metarama Gaming + Music Festival to produce a “Pros vs. Joes” League of Legends tournament in Las Vegas on October 19-20. Amateur League of Legends players nationwide will have the opportunity to compete for a chance to win a trip to Las Vegas to compete on stage at the festival against teams made up of top League of Legends players. League of Legends streamers playing in the festival’s “Pros vs. Joes” event include VoyBoy, BunnyFuFu, SimplyHai, Yassuo, BoxBox, Alexa, Trick2g, FSN_Saber, Huhi, and Foggedftw2.

  •  LoL is the leading game title in Hours Watched: League of Legends tournaments accounted for 40.72% of the samples live hours watched.
  •  Less viewers are watching more content: While the average number of viewers watching the Overwatch League is 48k lower than the samples average AMA, its audience consumed 47M more hours watched than average.
  •  The impact of franchised esports leagues: Franchised leagues (OWL, LCS & LEC) generated an AMA that was 18.7k viewers higher than relegated esports leagues. Relegated leagues generated 1.9M more H. Watched than franchised leagues.

RFRSH Entertainment tied up a deal with 20th Century Fox’s film Terminator: Dark Fate for BLAST Pro Series Moscow, announcing the deal on Twitter. The partnership will reportedly include showcasing behind-the-scenes content from the movie while fans at the venue can win themed merchandise, amongst other activations. The event will run September 13-14th at the VTB Arena. “We are very glad to work with one of the largest esports tournaments. As part of this partnership, two cultural phenomena have come together for us,” said Anastasia Polyakova, Acting Marketing Director of 20th Century Fox. “‘Terminator’ has become a solid part of pop culture, uniting people of different generations and interests. We are sure that for many gamers and esports fans, Terminator is the film which raised their interest in science fiction.”
With the Los Angeles Valiant set to play host this week for Overwatch League, KIT KAT Rivalry Weekend at The Novo at LA Live also locked up a slate of sponsors as the Valiant compete to qualify for the Overwatch League playoffs. Ford is launching its own esports virtual racing teams, according to Engadget, branded the name Fordzilla. The company is recruiting top esports drivers for teams in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK for the endeavor, in addition to inviting star players to form a European team with select members from each national team. The Fordzilla teams will compete in games that include Forza Motorsport 7.
Riot Games locked in Pringles to serve as its newest sponsor of the League of Legends European Championship Summer Finals. “We’ve been steadily developing our esports foot print to gain stronger brand recognition with the community. We’ve been present at a series of major tournaments generating content and arranging activations but it’s important we keep expanding our outreach and that we’re able to speak to esports fans across different titles,” said Dominik Schafhaupt, Kellogg Company’s Marketing Manager Snacks Northern Europe. “We’ve seen the energy and passion of the LEC fans and were excited to work with the team at Riot to help us build our relationship with their community for the Summer Finals.”
Newegg announced its plans to support Intel Gamer Days 2019, which runs Aug. 30-Sept. 8, with activation set to include the Newegg FragFest 2019 on Sept. 7 at the HyperX Esports Arena in Las Vegas. The event will see Newegg and Intel co-host pro players from Counter Logic Gaming, including Nokokopuffs, ImMadness and NiceWigg.


Ubisoft and theScore are playing duos in a new partnership to create and publish a video content series focusing on Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege. theScore will leverage its esports content team to produce a series of videos covering “the most compelling stories” from the teams and personalities across Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege community. Each video will be custom-made to include branded integrations from Ubisoft, helping to promote their Pro League and international events. “theScore esports has built a powerful reputation for highly engaging and dynamic video storytelling, providing competitive gaming fans globally with unrivaled access and insight into the titles, leagues, players and personalities they love,” said Aubrey Levy, VP of Marketing & Partnerships at theScore. “We’re excited to work with globally recognized publisher Ubisoft to showcase all of the incredible stories surrounding the Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Siege community.”
Estars announced plans to launch a new interactive, free-to-play gaming platform for esports and gaming fans to engage with their favorite competitions worldwide. To celebrate, Estars is matching millions of dollars in prizes across major esports tournaments this year through the Estars Majors, including up to $5M for The International and up to $10M for The Fortnite Champion Series (FNCS) Season Finals on Sept. 20-21.

Statespace landed $2.5 million in seed funding as its first product, Aim Lab, prepares to hit 1 million users. Funding was led by FirstMark Capitals, according to TechCrunch, with additional participation from Expa, Lux Capital and WndrCo to up the company’s total funding to $4 million. Aim Lab mimics the rules of a game in order to give gamers a practice space where they can improve their skills identify weaknesses.




Activision Blizzard has hired Creative Artists Agency executive David Messinger to serve as the publisher’s global chief marketing officer. Messenger is leaving CAA after more than 15 years, most recently serving as co-head of CAA Marketing where he was involved with clients including Coca-Cola Co., General Motors and Samsung.
