A post from Elon Musk said X users will no longer be able to block comments from unwanted followers. “Block is going to be deleted as a ‘feature’, except for DMs,” wrote Musk on Friday. The block function enables users to ensure that hateful content doesn’t show up in their posts, and to evade ads from specific brands or promoters. Concerned X users noted Apple and Google app-store guidelines require a system for blocking. “People are definitely freaking out because what they assume removing blocks means,” responded Christopher Stanley, head of security and engineering at X. “Most of what they assume is incorrect.” As for Musk? “Mayhem over nothing,” he posted.

Oh, Elon. X was caught throttling outbound links to news sites frequently attacked by Musk. Users were finding it took about five seconds to see pages from The New York Times, Facebook, Bluesky and Substack, according to tests conducted by The Washington Post, versus one second or less for unaffected sites. “While we don’t know the rationale behind the application of this time delay, we would be concerned by targeted pressure applied to any news organization for unclear reasons,” said a NY Times spokesperson, who said the paper had made “similar observations” of throttling.

Online gaming platform Roblox is being sued for allegedly acting as an illegal gambling ring that facilitates minors’ gambling. Parents in Northern California whose children lost money in the form of the platform’s internal currency on third-party gambling websites allege Roblox has illegally profited from minors’ gambling. “Children, who previously could not access the funds to participate in online gambling, now have, collectively, billions of Robux at their disposal,” said Rachel Colvin and Danielle Sass.

Add New York City to the places prohibiting TikTok on devices owned by the city. NYC officials said the app, owned by China’s ByteDance, poses “a security threat to the city’s technical networks.”

The medical and health information of over four Americans was stolen after hackers exploited a zero-day vulnerability in the MOVEit file transfer software systems operated by IBM. The Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing confirmed on Friday that it had fallen victim to hackers.

Three-quarters of smart TV owners have made use of “non-TV” features on their TVs, according to Hub study, Evolution of the TV Set 2023. That’s an increase over Hub’s 2020 study, where two-thirds had experimented with at least one non-TV function. Age matters – 90% of those age 16-34 had used a non-TV feature whereas 55% of people aged 55-74 had done so. “Consumers are willing to embrace non-TV uses for their smart sets, and those who have done so are already satisfied,” said Hub. “This suggests that the idea of making smart TVs the ‘hub’ of home technology – media, smart home, or otherwise – is not a pipe dream. OEMs have the chance to increase engagement with consumers across content categories (and even beyond entertainment itself) and to assume a central role in how people manage technology on a daily basis.”

Microsoft is prohibiting anyone from reverse engineering or harvesting data from its AI software to train or improve other models. The change can be found in a new clause titled “AI Services” in Microsoft’s terms of service and does not apply to enterprise users.

Relo Metrics (Formerly GumGum Sports), the AI-powered sponsorship analytics platform, will be integrating VideoAmp’s viewership data into their platform. Video Amp’s dataset will power Relo Metrics’ ability to give sports rights holders, media companies, brands and agencies a real-time resource for measuring the value of on-camera sponsorships and brand exposure during a live event. Relo Metrics’ AI computer vision models detect and track logos visible to audiences during broadcast, streaming video, and in content shared via social media to determine the return on investment for each sponsor.

IAS introduced an end-to-end campaign activation process within Google’s campaign management system, Campaign Manager 360. The automation feature enables marketers to automatically create and launch campaigns and wrap tags within Campaign Manager 360, while incorporating IAS’s media quality measurement solutions. With this new integration, marketers are able to reduce workflow inconsistencies by accessing Campaign Manager 360 data in IAS Signal directly.

Advertising spend on CTV during a one-month span reached $1 billion in June, according to data from ad intelligence provider Vivvix. The data includes advertising dollars spent by advertisers across streaming platforms including Hulu, Peacock, Paramount+, Pluto, Discovery+, Max (formerly HBO Max), Tubi, Roku, and as of May of this year, Disney+. “This milestone validates the projections on CTV’s ascendency from experimental to a ‘table stakes’ medium,” said Andrew Feigenson, CEO of Vivvix. “It’s where viewers are increasingly spending their time, and in order to be competitive, brands must play ball on those fields, and understand what competitors are doing on these platforms. The data really informs brands where the white space is within the video journey as well. We noticed, for example, a dearth of pet brands advertising on Disney+ in June. That signals a real opportunity.”

MEASUREMENT

There is a “clear and direct correlation” between attention and brand outcomes, according to a study that combines third-party attention with brand lift metrics. In Unveiling the Connection: Attention & Outcomes, from Teads and Lumen Research, attention measurement is found to be a catalyst for effective media spend while minimizing wastage. Results became more impactful with longer engagement durations, with high attention yielding a consistent improvement across the entire funnel, including mid- and low-funnel metrics with longer dwell times. The positive impact of attention on lower funnel objectives yielded a 30% lift from exposures of 10+ seconds. “Our meta-analysis with Lumen marks an important milestone that examines a diverse range of brand outcome metrics with attention metrics from LAMP [the Lumen Attention Measurement Platform],” said Caroline Hugonenc, SVP, Research & Insights at Teads. “These insights are the latest examples supporting attention as a more powerful driver of outcomes compared to viewability.”

Teads is partnering with Adelaide to launch high-attention omnichannel private marketplaces. With the addition of Teads’ high attention PMPs, Teads now offers self-serve and managed solutions via both third party DSPs and Teads Ad Manager for attention measurement, optimization, and activation, available to brands in their preferred activation method.
