PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
National Geographic is expanding its unscripted slate, greenlighting three new series. “Life Below Zero: First Alaskans” is a spinoff of the “Life Below Zero” franchise with a cast of Native Alaskans. “Appetite for Adventure” follows Big Moe Cason on a global journey to seek out the most mouthwatering mythical dishes cooked over an open flame, and “The 7 Toughest Days on Earth” trails explorer Dwayne Fields as he’s dropped into some of the most extreme places on Earth.
In other Nat Geo news, Will Smith’s Westbrook Studios is expanding its relationship with the network, signing a five-year first-look deal for unscripted content. The agreement comes ahead of Smith’s adventure series “Welcome to Earth” premiering on Disney+ later this year.
Travis Braun signed a new overall deal with Disney to develop and produce animated and live-action content across linear and streaming platforms for Disney Branded Television. The pact includes a first look at any of Braun’s projects for other Disney-owned platforms. In addition, Braun’s preschool series “Pupstruction” was picked up by Disney Junior, while an untitled live-action Disney Channel Original Movie is also in production.
Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance are producing “One Thousand Years of Slavery” for Smithsonian Channel. The four-part docu-series from Bassett Vance Productions explores the legacy of slavery and how our shared history can create a better future.
Kerry Washington is set to produce “From the Desk of Zoe Washington,” an original movie based on the Janae Marks book, at Disney Branded Television. The project focuses on middle-schooler and aspiring pastry chef Zoe, who sets her sights on auditioning for Food Network’s “Kids Bake Challenge” the summer before seventh grade. The project will be executive produced by Washington’s Simpson Street Productions and Gamechanger Films.
“How to Be Human,” a comedy from writer Brenda Hsueh (“Disjointed”) and Party Over Here, is in development at Fox, reports Deadline. The show revolves around Eve, a robot who breaks from her lab to learn how to be human.
The adventures of “Marvel’s Spidey And His Amazing Friends” will continue at Disney Junior. The children’s show, the first full length Marvel series for preschoolers, was ordered for a second season.
HBO Max renewed “FBoy Island.” The reality TV dating series’ second season will feature a new batch of Nice Guys and FBoys.
“On the Edge with Alex Honnold” is a go at Disney+. The three-part original docuseries, produced by Plimsoll Productions, follows the professional adventure rock climber as he tackles remote walls and peaks in Greenland.
Writing partners Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey (“Mixed-ish,” “Grown-ish”) have signed a multi-year overall deal with ABC Signature. The series, inspired by their real-life friendship, features two best friends narrating the story of their twenties in LA.

Pastry chefs compete to make spectacular showpieces in “Chocolate Meltdown: Hershey’s After Dark.” The four-episode series premieres Monday, September 27 at 10p on Food Network.
“Marriage Boot Camp: Hip Hop Edition” bows Thursday, October 7 at 9p on WE tv. This season, N.O.R.E and Neri, Monie Love and Tuff, producer Mally Mall and Treasure, and Siir Brock and Amber Laura put in the work to find out if their relationships are worth saving.
“Flipping 101 with Tarek El Moussa” returns to HGTV on Thursday, September 16 at 9p. The real estate expert will continue to coach amateur flippers in the show’s second season.
HBO three-part documentary, “Nuclear Family,” debuts Sunday, September 26 at 10p, following filmmaker Ry Russo-Young as she turns the camera on her own past to explore the meaning of family.
“Turning Point: 9/11 And The War On Terror” bows Wednesday, September 1 on Netflix. The five-part series examines how the catastrophic events of September 11, 2001 changed the course of the nation.
Meanwhile, National Geographic debuts “9/11: One Day In America” on Wednesday, August 29 at 9p. The six-part series, which will air over four consecutive nights, chronicles the events of that 2001 day from the perspectives of first responders and survivors.
“No Chill with Gilbert Arenas” makes its second season premiere on Sunday, August 22 at 7p on Fubo Sports Network. The basketball-centric talk series centers on athletes and fans, and how the game impacts their lives on and off the court.

Spotify and WWE have stuck an exclusive podcast deal. Spotify’s The Ringer division plans to launch an exclusive audio network as part of the partnership with WWE. Plus, existing WWE audio programming will become available exclusively on Spotify late in 2021.

Comcast and ViacomCBS are launching streaming service SkyShowtime in select European markets.
