IN THE NEWS
For the first time ever, linear TV viewership made up less than half of all TV usage in a measurement month, according to Nielsen’s The Gauge report for July. Broadcast accounted for 20% of viewing and cable 29.6%, record lows and down 5.4% and 12.5%, respectively, versus the same period last year. Streaming viewing rose 2.9% from June to July and was up 25.3% over the past year, accounting for 38.7% of total TV usage. USA Network legal drama “Suits” (2011-19) is credited with helping Netflix achieve a 4.2% increase in TV share – the series, which dropped on Netflix and Peacock in June, broke Nielsen records with nearly 4 billion minutes viewed in one measurement week.
Selina Wang is joining ABC News as Senior White House Correspondent. Wang had been CNN’s correspondent in China. Rachael Bade and Asma Khalid are also joining the ABC News political team as a contributing political correspondent and a contributor, respectively. Bade was previously senior Washington correspondent and co-author of “Playbook” at POLITICO, and Khalid was NPR White House correspondent and co-host of the “NPR Politics Podcast.”
Over at CNBC, Angelica Peebles is joining the network as Health and Pharmaceutical Reporter. Peebles, who covered consumer health for CNBC.com from 2017-20, joins from Bloomberg, where she most recently covered biotech from its Boston bureau.
X users clicking on shortened links to websites frequently attacked by Elon Musk are finding it takes about five seconds to see those pages, according to tests conducted by The Washington Post. That’s versus one second or less for unaffected sites. Delays were noted on news organizations and X competitors like The New York Times, Facebook, Bluesky and Substack. “While we don’t know the rationale behind the application of this time delay, we would be concerned by targeted pressure applied to any news organization for unclear reasons,” said a NY Times spokesperson, who said the paper had made “similar observations” of throttling.
The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the nominees for the 2023 News & Current Affairs categories. The winners will be recognized alongside their American news peers during a ceremony in NYC on September 27. The 8 nominees span 6 countries: Brazil, Israel, Qatar, Sweden, Turkey and the UK. “In a world full of turmoil and conflict, the need for true journalistic voices is more vital than ever,” said Bruce L. Paisner, President & CEO of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. “We salute the journalists around the world who take great risks every day to bring important human and political issues to the forefront.”
Among the winners of the 75th Engineering, Science and Technology Emmy Awards are Nvision CEO/CTO Birney Dayto, who will receive the Charles F. Jenkins Lifetime Achievement Award, and the National Association of Broadcasters, taking home the Philo T. Farnsworth Corporate Achievement Award. The ceremony will take place October 18.
Chicken Soup for the Soul reported revenue of $79.9 million for 2Q23, below analysts’ expectations of $120.1 million. In a call with analysts, CFO Jason Meier said the company plans to generate $15 million in savings from streamlining its digital and distribution businesses and creating a centralized organization. Chicken Soup has eliminated the Seattle headquarters of Redbox, which it acquired last year, in favor of fully remote employees there.
STRIKE UPDATES
In its latest proposal to the WGA, presented on Friday, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers offered concessions including giving showrunners greater authority to set staffing size on shows; stricter regulations on AI technology; and the sharing of streaming viewership data, reports TheWrap. While the WGA wants to use streaming data to raise residual payments, the AMPTP did not tie payments to viewership data.
Fall film festival buyers must agree to the terms proposed for the guild’s new contract before acquiring projects being promoted under an interim agreement, said Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator. “The contract contains assumption provisions which require any party that acquires rights under that collective bargaining agreement to assume the obligation to pay the residuals that are required by the contract,” Crabtree-Ireland told reporters during a Zoom call. As for resuming negotiations, “We very much want the AMPTP to come back to the table,” said Ireland.
LEGAL ISSUES
A UK judge has ruled that former CNN journalist Saima Mohsin can take her claim of unfair dismissal and discrimination to the London Central Employment Tribunal. Mohsin, who was injured while on assignment in Jerusalem for CNN in 2014 when a cameraman ran over her foot, claims CNN terminated her after she requested alternative duties and support during rehab. CNN has argued that Mohsin’s employment contract did not give the UK tribunal jurisdiction over her claims.
Fox News also got unwelcome news when a New York judge rejected a motion to dismiss a lawsuit from former FNC exec Laura Luhn, who alleges former network head Roger Ailes abused her and tried to blackmail her. Luhn is challenging an agreement she signed with Fox News, claiming she signed it under duress. “At this stage of the litigation, the duress that is alleged that occurred prior to the negotiation of the agreement between the parties is enough for this case not to be dismissed,” said the judge.
Disney is being sued by film financier TSG, which accuses the company of altering theatrical windows to increase streaming revenue to the detriment of finance partners. “This windowing of film distribution is designed to maximize profits for the studios (and for stakeholders like TSG) by preventing one distribution revenue stream from cannibalizing another,” says the lawsuit. “When windows are collapsed on one another, however, the studio (and its investors) miss out on significant potential sources of revenue.”

TECH TALK
Three-quarters of smart TV owners have made use of “non-TV” features on their TVs, according to Hub study, Evolution of the TV Set 2023. That’s an increase over Hub’s 2020 study, where two-thirds of respondents said they had experimented with at least one non-TV function. Age matters – 90% of those age 16-34 had used a non-TV feature whereas 55% of people aged 55-74 had done so. “Consumers are willing to embrace non-TV uses for their smart sets,” said the Hub report. “This suggests that the idea of making smart TVs the ‘hub’ of home technology – media, smart home, or otherwise – is not a pipe dream. OEMs have the chance to increase engagement with consumers across content categories (and even beyond entertainment itself) and to assume a central role in how people manage technology on a daily basis.”
There is a “clear and direct correlation” between attention and brand outcomes, according to a study that combines third-party attention with brand lift metrics. In Unveiling the Connection: Attention & Outcomes, from Teads and Lumen Research, attention measurement is found to be a catalyst for effective media spend while minimizing wastage. Results became more impactful with longer engagement durations, with high attention yielding a consistent improvement across the entire funnel, including mid- and low-funnel metrics with longer dwell times. The positive impact of attention on lower funnel objectives yielded a 30% lift from exposures of 10+ seconds. “Our meta-analysis with Lumen marks an important milestone that examines a diverse range of brand outcome metrics with attention metrics from LAMP [the Lumen Attention Measurement Platform],” said Caroline Hugonenc, SVP, Research & Insights at Teads. “These insights are the latest examples supporting attention as a more powerful driver of outcomes compared to viewability.”
STREAMING
NBCUniversal is diving deeper into FAST with the launch of new channels on Roku, including “Murder, She Wrote,” “Little House on the Prairie,” “Saved by the Bell” and “Bad Girls Club,” as well as a rotation on The Universal Crime Channel that includes “Columbo” and “The Rockford Files,” and shows like “Punky Brewster” on the Teen NBC offering. “As FAST continues to gain incredible popularity in the marketplace, we’re excited to bring such terrific content options – including a strong roster of very well-known, fan-favorite programming – to our viewers,” said Jennifer Vaux, VP, Content Acquisition & Programming for The Roku Channel.
Warner Bros. Discovery shut down sports streaming service iStreamPlanet, founded in 2000 by former basketball player Mio Babic. Turner Broadcasting acquired a majority stake in the company in 2015. iStreamPlanet has streamed events including the Super Bowl, FIFA World Cup, the Olympics and NCAA games.
FilmRise is expanding The FilmRise Creators Partner Program to include an additional 11 creator libraries. The FilmRise Creator Partner Program curates and distributes creator content to streaming platforms. This summer, FilmRise will distribute “UnspeakablePlays,” a spinoff of the series “Unspeakable,” which will highlight the creator’s gaming vertical. Additionally, the studio will distribute “That Chapter” and “Sam and Colby,” its first set of true crime/paranormal exploration programs in the Creator space. The three series will debut on The FilmRise Streaming Network.

SPORTS ROUNDUP
“SportsCenter” anchor Sage Steele is leaving ESPN, in what the network characterized as a mutually agreed-upon parting of the ways. “Having successfully settled my case with ESPN/Disney, I have decided to leave so I can exercise my first amendment rights more freely,” posted Steele on Tuesday. “I am grateful for so many wonderful experiences over the past 16 years and am excited for my next chapter!”. Steele was removed from the air on ESPN after her comments on politics and social issues drew criticism.
Manoj Bhargava, founder of 5-Hour Energy, has acquired a two-thirds stake in The Arena Group, publisher of Sports Illustrated, and signed an agreement to combine the broadcast networks of Simplify Inventions with The Arena Group Holdings and its properties. Bhargava also acquired national TV networks Sports News Highlights and Newsnet. “Media companies have become so enamored of delivery technology that they have forgotten the basics – advertisers (their customers), their most valuable audience and even content gets a back seat,” said Bhargava. “Sounds like a great opportunity to me.”
GOING GLOBAL
9 Story Distribution has acquired worldwide VOD rights (excluding the UK and Ireland) to two new live-action titles from MonRae Productions: “Let’s Game” and “Challenge DanTDM.”
