This year’s gala will be hosted by legendary actor Clifton Powell.

USA Network ordered 14 more episodes of Miz & Mrs, the docuseries starring WWE Superstars Mike “The Miz” Mizanin and Maryse Mizanin. The show gave USA its top unscripted launch since 2011, averaging 1.7 million P2+ viewers during its first three installments.
Game Show Network renewed America Says for a second season, after the show’s initial run built over its lead-in by 26% and performed over 40% above the YTD time period average in the W25-54 demo.
CMT ordered eight episodes of Racing Wives, a docu-series following the lives of famous race car drivers. The net also renewed Music City for a ten-episode second season.
Lee Daniels Entertainment grabbed spy novel The Spook Who Sat By the Door for TV series development with Fox 21 Television Studios. Fictional story focuses on the first African American CIA officer.
WE tv is gearing up for more divas, renewing Bridezillas after the wedding planning reboot earned double-digit ratings growth over the course of its return season. New 10-episode season will premiere in 2019.
Netflix and CBC ordered season three of Anne with an E, the coming-of-age story inspired by Anne of Green Gables from Northwood Entertainment.
Production is underway in Atlanta for TV One’s new original holiday film, Coins For Christmas, starring Essence Atkins (Marlon) as a single mother struggling to make ends meet two weeks before Christmas. Film is set to debut in December.
Pilgrim Media Group inked a development deal with game show producers Michael Canter and Jeff Krask (Family Feud, Deal or No Deal) to develop and produce an array of project for broadcast, cable and digital platforms. The first two series to emerge from the deal are already set up at a broadcast net.
Big Bad Boo Studios’ new kids show 16 Hudson will debut across Canada this fall with 39 X 7-minute episodes and 3 holiday specials. The animated preschool series premieres on TVOKids in the greater Ontario region on August 21, followed by Knowledge Kids on September 3rd.
The third and final season of Versailles debuts on Ovation Saturday, October 6 at 10p.
El Rey Network unscripted series Man at Arms: Art of War returns for season two Thursday, October 4 at 8p, with Danny Trejo (Sons of Anarchy) back as host.
Also returning for season two is Cartoon Network’s Craig of the Creek, set to launch in 2019. New episodes of the current season premiere Monday, August 20 at 4p.
Amazon animated series Pete the Cat, featuring music from spouses Elvis Costello and Diana Krall, premieres Friday, September 21.
A new season of Animal Planet’s North Woods Law (not to be confused with the net’s Northwest Law, premiering tonight at 10p) debuts Sunday, August 19 at 9p, following New Hampshire conservation officers.
Global consumer and ad spend on TV and video will jump from $490 billion in 2017 to $559 billion in 2022, projects Strategy Analytics, with spend on OTT making up 90% of the growth. “OTT TV and video services will be the driving force behind future revenue,” said Michael Goodman, director, television & media strategies. “However, traditional TV and video services should not despair too much, as they will continue to account for the majority of consumer and advertising spend for the foreseeable future.”
Done deal: AT&T announced that its acquisition of ad tech firm AppNexus is complete. The plan is for AT&T to integrate first-party data from mobile and TV customers with its WarnerMedia and Otter Media content; details to come at the company’s late September conference.
Meredith Corp.’s people-based ad tech company, Viant, launched an enhanced suite of capabilities for CPG marketers through its expanded partnership with IRI. Viant’s new Sales Tactic Optimization solution provides advertisers with weekly insights throughout the campaign, identifying the top performing segments driving actual lift. In addition, Viant has launched Purchase Cycle Targeting so CPG marketers can hone in on the unique purchase cycles of their various products, and deliver messaging at the likely points of repurchase.
“A Look Under the Hood,” a study from the Video Advertising Bureau, found 76% of auto brands showed a direct correlation between TV spend and website traffic; brands that increased their TV investment on average spent 15% more on TV for a 48% increase in unique website visitors.
Endemol Shine North America and The Miss Universe Organization struck a deal to work together on commercial initiatives in the United States. Endemol Shine’s LA-based team will seek opportunities with Miss Universe, Miss USSA and Miss Teen USA, including on-air integrations, off-channel sponsorships and promotions, digital initiatives and licensing extensions. Target categories: Health and wellness, beauty and lifestyle, apparel and accessories.
HBO and social/dating app Bumble have partnered for “Stay Home to the Movies,” showcasing HBO’s lineup for Bumble users in the New York area in a transformed brownstone. Bumble Date and Bumble BFF users in NYC had the opportunity to swipe right for a chance to attend the event with either someone they’ve been chatting with or with a friend; when guests arrive, they are prompted to fill out a quick quiz. Based on their answers, they will receive a bracelet that designates them to a specific movie that’s currently available on HBO. For Bumble users who can’t make it to the event, starting tomorrow, August 17 through the weekend, HBO and Bumble will give users nationwide the opportunity to win their own HBO Movie watching package.
Overwatch, the LA Dodgers and VY Esports  have partnered to create the inaugural OverwatchLeague Night at Dodger Stadium on August 22. It’s the first-of-its kind esports themed fan night at Dodger Stadium, bringing together baseball and esports, leading into the kickoff of the inaugural Overwatch League All-Star Weekend.

As regulatory approval for games has become trickier to obtain, China’s Tencent reported its net profit for the second quarter dropped 2% to $2.7 billion. Revenues rose rose 30%, but missed analysts’ forecasts. Online games make up one third of the company’s revenue.
Customers buying Verizon’s 5G in-home internet service later this year in select cities will have a choice of a free subscription to the YouTube TV app, or an Apple TV 4K streaming box. Customers will also have access to NFL and NBA games and news programs through Verizon’s Oath, reports Bloomberg. The news follows Verizon’s decision not to proceed with its own online TV offering.
Toronto-based storytelling app Wattpad inked a content partnership with Asian digital platform iflix. “With Wattpad, we now have the opportunity to work with thousands talented Indonesian writers to bring their stories to life for millions of iflix users in Indonesia, and broadly across our 30 markets worldwide,” said iflix chief content officer Sean Carey. 
Upcoming Amazon Prime Original Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan will be available globally on Prime Video in Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision starting August 31. The combined Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision experience will initially be available on certain Dolby Vision TVs and Dolby Atmos enabled audio devices.
My Favorite Murder hosts Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark are launching Exactly Right Media, a new podcast network in partnership with Stitcher. Kilgariff and Hardstark are curating the Exactly Right lineup to serve the My Favorite Murder audience and beyond.
TownNews.com will manage content and video for Meredith Corp.’s Local Media Group’s 17 TV stations. “We felt strongly that TownNews.com, which has been a leader in the CMS space for many years, offered us the best tools and the most customizable platform to achieve our goals, especially when it comes to our users’ experience,” said Matt Strait, Meredith’s VP of digital media. New sites are slated to launch late summer through fall 2018.
Discovery’s Lifestyle Digital Studios reports that Food Network, HGTV and Travel Channel have succeeded in driving viewership and awareness of their linear series through the creation of content that supports both live and on-demand viewing. And they offered examples: On Food NetworkLet’s Eat premiered on Sunday, August 12 with a digital content plan including #LetsEat social contest garnering 3K engagements, live Facebook videos with an average engagement rate of 61.0, and digital series Viv’s Tips leading to more than 400K views. On HGTV, Flip or Flop’s digital content has led to 8 million video views across Facebook and Instagram with current ratings 18% ahead of the prior season. And Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures series has digital content totaling over 2 million views across Facebook and Instagram and an average engagement rate of 55.9 on FB and 324.0 on IG.

Fox, MTV and Comedy Central were the only nets to show a gain in viewership in July versus the same month last year, according to MoffettNathanson Research. Primetime TV viewership dropped 12% for the month, with broadcast dipping 10% and cable down 13% in Nielsen C3 A18-49. Fox rose 5% with a World Cup boost, Comedy Central added 16,000 total viewers and MTV grew by 4,000.
From Aug 5-8 at 9p, Nat Geo’s Yellowstone Live attracted 13 million total viewers across National Geographic and Nat Geo WILD during its multi-platform run. The first night on National Geographic, Yellowstone Live ranked as one of the top 10 most-watched shows on ad-supported cable for all key demos, including P25-54 (578,000), M25-54 (329,000), and total viewers P2+ (1.9 million).
The premiere of Disney Channel movie Freaky Friday on Friday, August 10 reached 7.2 million total viewers, including 3.1 million Kids 6-14, across seven telecasts its first three days. The Friday 8p telecast ranked as the summer’s number one telecast among both Kids 6-11 (999,000/4.2 rating) and Tweens 9-14 (782,000/3.2 rating).
Feel the Bern: Tuesday’s The Late Show with special guest Senator Bernie Sanders hit a 2.7 metered market household rating, making it the highest-rated episode of the CBS talker since June 13. 
HGTV’s Love It or List It delivered a .75 live plus same day rating among viewers 25-54 on Monday, August 13, the series’ highest-rated premiere episode since February 2014. The episode delivered a 40% ratings increase year-over-year in the timeslot among A25-54 and helped HGTV rank as the #1 cable network among upscale women 25-54.
