IN THE NEWS
Peacock is launching a weekly topical late-night block, set to launch in September. The Amber Ruffin Show stars Ruffin, a writer/performer on Late Night with Seth Meyers. “Having a late-night show on Peacock is so exciting!” she said. “We can’t wait to write sketches, songs and jokes about this terrible time we call now!”. Former Nightly Show host Larry Wilmore, who has an overall production deal with Universal TV, will make his return to late night with Untitled Larry Wilmore Show (wt).
Disney Television Studios is rebranding its three studios, 20th Century Fox Television, Fox 21 TV Studios and ABC Studios/ABC Signature – and it’s a less confusing. 20th Century Fox TV is renamed 20th Television, under President Carolyn Cassidy; Fox 21 has been christened Touchstone Television, under Bert Salke; and ABC Studios and subsidiary ABC Signature, under President Jonnie Davis, will merge under the name ABC Signature. “Our new studio names and logos mark a new day for ABC Signature, 20th Television and Touchstone Television while honoring their rich histories and the creative power of The Walt Disney Company,” said Disney Television Studios President Craig Hunegs. The rebrand comes almost 18 months after Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox assets, in a deal that called for the removal of the Fox name from Disney’s new companies.
Layoffs began Monday at WarnerMedia. The cuts, part of a restructuring expected to affect hundreds of jobs, came days after WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar announced a shakeup that included the exits of two top executives, Bob Greenblatt and Kevin Reilly, and plans for a stronger focus on streamer HBO Max. At least three senior Warner Bros. executives were laid off yesterday: Jeffrey Schlesinger, President of Warner Bros. Worldwide Television; Ron Sanders, President of Worldwide Theatrical Distribution and Home Entertainment; and EVP and CFO of Warner Bros. Entertainment, Kim Williams. Sanders and Williams both had words of high praise for the company, but Schlesinger’s were perhaps the most memorable. “It’s been a great 37 year run, with 26 as president of International Television Distribution, spanning six mergers, millions of miles traveled, thousands of programs sold and billions of dollars generated,” he said. “In the end, it took a global pandemic and a complete reorganization of the company for me to trip over the last hurdle. I hope to always be remembered as the only studio executive to ride into an International Screenings party at the studio on the back of an elephant in the ‘good old days.’”
Tegna reported 2Q20 revenue of $578 million, up 8% year-over-year. Excluding political advertising, revenue was up 5%. Advertising and marketing services revenue was down 21%, due to the impact of the health crisis. “The significant declines in advertising and marketing revenues that began in late March improved by more than 20 percentage points through June, and our sales and marketing teams have innovated with advertisers to adapt to this dynamic environment,” said Dave Lougee, President and CEO. “Although we can’t be certain when the broader advertising industry will fully recover from the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, our long-term value proposition to advertisers remains intact. That includes the relevance and demand for our local platforms which has only grown stronger.”
Univision ad revenue was down 40% in 2Q20 thanks to the pandemic, but during the company’s earnings call CFO Peter Lori predicted a much lower 15% dip in the third quarter. Helping the recovery is Univision’s modest ratings upswing, in time for upfront negotiations, versus double digit declines elsewhere.
Only 1% of small or mid-sized brands are influenced by the action of large brands when they cut or stop social media campaigns, according a Borrel Associates report, “How COVID-19 Is Shaping Social Media.” Asked about the challenges of marketing their company on social media, the top five issues SMBs cited were creating content and messages, measurement, cutting through clutter, lack of staff and time, and staying up to date on best practices. |
