08/09/19: CBS and AT&T locked in a new pact


Good morning. It’s Friday August 9, 2019 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Just ahead of football season, CBS Corporation and AT&T ended their standoff and inked a new multi-year content carriage agreement to provide CBS-owned local broadcast stations in addition to CBS Sports Network (and Smithsonian Channel) to customers of AT&T’s video platforms across the country. The agreement includes retransmission consent for all 26 CBS-owned stations in 17 markets including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, Boston, Atlanta, Tampa, Seattle, Detroit, Minneapolis, Miami, Denver, Sacramento, Pittsburgh and Baltimore. 

MLB is heading to the “Field of Dreams,” announcing that the Yankees and White Sox will play a game in Iowa for the first time, playing in front of a temporary 8,000-seat ballpark constructed in the corn on the Dyersville farm site where the classic film was shot. MLB at Field of Dreams presented by GEICO will be nationally broadcast on FOX at 7p. “As a sport that is proud of its history linking generations, Major League Baseball is excited to bring a regular season game to the site of Field of Dreams,” Commissioner Rob Manfred said. “We look forward to celebrating the movie’s enduring message of how baseball brings people together at this special cornfield in Iowa.”
ACC Network, launching on Aug. 22, revealed its new 2,800 square foot home in Bristol, serving up technical capabilities that include: 4 Grass Valley LDX 86 4K capable cameras set to 1080p; 3 Fully robotic Vinten camera pedestals; 1 MOSYS eCrane with StarTracker virtual capabilities; 2 Grass Valley LDC 4K capable cameras set to 1080p; 2 Vinten Vantage PTZ Robotic camera heads; 5 LED walls (1 traveling); 2 Touchscreens as well as 262 LED lighting fixtures lighting talent and scenic. Along with these features, unique to the ACCN studio are two fully robotic telescoping pedestals custom, built-in scenic boxes to accommodate the interview set. These cameras allow for quick movement between two sets without having to move the robotic camera pedestals into the space.
HBO is reports that the premier of this year’s Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Oakland Raiders handed the outlet with a linear and digital audience of 879,000 premiere night viewers. That marks a 13% rise over last year’s premier night viewership and represents the second highest premiere night for the Hard Knocks franchise in the past nine years, trailing only the NY Jets which delivered 1.3 million viewers in 2010 for episode #1.
Horse racing has a new top stop, with the announcement of the $20 million Saudi Cup, to be run at King Abdulaziz Racetrack in Riyadh on Feb. 29, 2020, racing over a distance of nine furlongs on dirt with a maximum field of 14 starters. The prize for the winning horse will be $10 million with horses down to 10th place sharing another $10 million between them. The Saudi Cup will take its place in the international calendar at the end of February and will be run four weeks after the Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park, and four weeks prior the Dubai World Cup at Meydan, meaning that the top horses in training have the opportunity to compete in all three of the most valuable dirt races in the world.
Turner Sports’ UEFA coverage returns for its second season with a UEFA Super Cup from Istanbul on Aug. 14, at 3p pitting the reigning Champions League winner Liverpool and Chelsea. Live match coverage will be available through TNT and B/R Live starting with B/R Football Matchday presented by Gillette previewing the action at 2p. Kate Abdo will host B/R Football’s pre-, half and post-match UEFA Super Cup studio coverage from Turner Studios in Atlanta alongside analysts Stuart Holden, Maurice Edu and Carlos Bocanegra.
Meanwhile, beIN SPORTS continues coverage of top European soccer leagues including Spain’s LaLiga, France’s Ligue 1 and Turkey’s Süper Lig across all network platforms. Kicking off beIN SPORTS’s European soccer coverage is Ligue 1 returning today with the opening match between AS Monaco and Olympique Lyonnais. Fans can tune into live coverage of LaLiga’s opening matchday featuring Athletic Bilbao versus FC Barcelona, on August 16 at 2:50p while the Turkish Super Lig returns the following day as Galatasaray faces Besiktas.
Rounding out soccer news, ESPN landed exclusive rights in South America for the next three seasons of Premier League, covering Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. The deal comes after DAZN, which originally won the Spanish-speaking rights in Latin America, was unable to launch the product in the region.
ESPN’s Little League coverage will now also see coverage of the first-ever T-Mobile Little League Home Run Derby Championship, on Aug. 18 at 4:30p on ESPN. In addition, for the first time, coverage from Williamsport will be produced in 1080p and every game at Lamade Stadium will also have 4D replay. On Aug. 21, ESPN2 will have a special Kidscast alternative experience as aspiring broadcasters recruited from the Bruce Beck Sports Broadcasting Camp at Iona College will call Game 24 in the U.S. Winner’s Bracket. Sixteen-year-olds Eddie Kalegi and Aiden Blanc will be providing play-by-play in the booth as 15-year-old reporters Zoe Alter and Rahill Jaiswal are on the sidelines.
Billy Corgan revealed that the National Wrestling Alliance is launching a weekly television show this fall as the company owner announced that the promotion will its own series this fall on Youtube.

Panini America and the number one overall pick of the NBA Draft Zion Williamson are partnering up for an exclusive trading card agreement. The pact will feature Williamson’s only licensed college and NBA trading cards and autograph card with his first officially licensed autograph trading cards set to appear in Panini America’s 2019 Contenders Draft Picks Basketball in early September. His first officially licensed NBA autographs will release in October with the arrival of the 2019-20 NBA Hoops Basketball product,
iBuyPower, the manufacturer of custom gaming PCs, announced its partnership with Toyota Racing Development. To kick off the deal, iBUYPOWER outfitted the entire TRD team with its remastered Pro Series of workstation PCs. The company and TRD, in collaboration with Intel, will also launch a series of TRD approved systems exclusively using the latest Intel CPU and Intel Solid State Storage to cater to the PC enthusiast market in addition to producing a video series called “Room for Improvement.”
Lindsay Vonn announced her Foundation’s newest scholarship program. Partnering with The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation, The Lindsay Vonn Foundation established The DICK’S Foundation Sports Matter Scholarship for underprivileged youth athletes across the country. Scholarship funds can be applied to sports programs of any kind and for any amount up to $25,000.

2K made history with the announcement that all 12 WNBA teams and players will be making their debut in NBA 2K20, Available in Play Now and Season modes, fans of the franchise will be able to use female players for the first time and experience gameplay animations, play styles and visuals built exclusively around the women’s game. A slate of WNBA superstars, including Candice Parker, A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart were scanned into NBA 2K20 earlier this year using 2K’s motion capture technology. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert noted, “We are excited to have WNBA players as part of this top- selling video game, helping to bring more exposure to these elite players, expanding our fan base and providing an immersive gaming experience featuring women role model athletes.”
WSC Sports, specializing in AI-powered sports video content, announced it has raised $23 million in Series C funding, bringing the company’s total funding to$39 million. The new capital will be used to further expand WSC’s growth across new sports, products and geographic regions. This funding round was led by Eyal Ofer’s O.G. Tech Ventures.

Riot Games gassed up another major partnership, this time with Honda which will serve as the exclusive automotive partner for the LCS. Honda also has alliances in esports with Team Liquid and Twitch, but the new deal makes the brand the first automaker in North America to sponsor both an esports league as well as a team competing in it, according to the announcement. Activation kicks off with the Summer Split Playoffs, which begin in Los Angeles on Saturday and the Finals, which will take place in Detroit on Aug. 24-25.

HyperX announced full peripherals sponsorship of PUBG Nations Cup, the first all-star event in PUBG Esports. The company will provide the event with gaming equipment including Cloud Alpha, Cloud Earbuds, Pulsefire FPS Pro, Alloy FPS RGB and FURY RGB SSD. “We’re excited to extend our support for PUBG community from FACEIT Global Summit to PUBG Nations Cup,” said Susan Yang, director of APAC marketing, HyperX. “With the support of HyperX peripherals, we aim to demonstrate how professional-grade gear empowers PUBG gamers and enhances their gaming experience.”
GungHo Online Entertainment announced the release of TEPPEN, a card battle game for mobile from the joint development team of GOE and CAPCOM, in Asia. Details on TEPPEN’s competitive plans were shared with the reveal of the TEPPEN World Championship, the first worldwide tournament in which representatives from around the globe will face off in the Ultimate Card Battle for a cash prize, taking place in Tokyo coming this December. Also announced were the PAX West Invitational Tournament, Tokyo Game Show Cup, and other events.
N3rd Street Gamers announced a partnership with Fairleigh Dickinson University to bring a professional-grade esports team room to FDU’s Florham campus. NSG will provide the design and build for the room and advise the University on the creation of their esports team and program slated to launch in 2020.
