TCA Talk: On NBC’s panel for The Good Place, heading into its fourth and final season, star Kristen Bell praised EP Michael Schur. “He empowers people so well,” said Bell. “He makes you feel like you belong there and he sets a tone that makes everything work in this joyful manner because everyone feels included.”… Bradley Whitford, on hand to talk about his new musical comedy series, Perfect Harmony, noted the change in TV since his West Wing days. “A show of The West Wing’s aspiration used to be an anomaly,” he said. “I actually think we’re living in this amazing time where those kind of aspirations are no longer anomalies. I think network TV is reacting to that elevation of the aspiration.”
The three-week blackout is over. CBS and AT&T struck a carriage deal on Thursday that returned the network to satellite giant DirecTV. The companies’ dispute, which began on July 20, saw CBS stations in NYC, Los Angels more go dark on DirecTV, DirecTV Now and U-verse cable systems. The new multi-year deal includes CBS Sports Network and Smithsonian Channel.
NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon will open its fall season with Sunday post-football telecasts and a week of live shows. The first will air on September 8, following a match-up between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots. Guests for the telecast include Jamie Foxx and Michael B. Jordan, who will share a clip of their new film, Just Mercy. Kelly Clarkson will also appear to discuss her new daytime series, The Kelly Clarkson Show, while singer Kane Brown will perform.

Fuse unveiled findings of a new research study which shows that millennials – a group that many have considered to be “all about me” – is instead more about “we.” Among the key findings in the 2019 Fuse Multicultural Insider: millennials see the notion of “unity” as 2X more valuable than diversity (and 55% of millennials agree “diversity isn’t inclusive enough”). “While respecting each other’s culture is important to this generation, their shared sensibilities and passions have deeply bonded them and encouraged them to look past these once-limiting boundaries,” said Mark McIntire, Fuse Media Head of Marketing. “Millennials understand the power of being united, and want to work together to improve the world for themselves and future generations. They also expect companies that are looking to engage with them to follow suit.”
BIG TV Q&A
Media companies, brands and agencies are working more closely than ever to create content that resonates with ultra-aware and sensitive consumers, and branded content delivers. Cheryl Maher, President, Consumer & B2B Division of Atlanta agency Scout, will lead a discussion on the topic, “Leveraging the Branded Revolution,” at the Cynopsis Big TV Conference in September. Maher shares some insights here:
What is the key to creating unskippable content?
Cheryl Maher: I think being “live” is the key. Everyone is going live daily from FB, Instagram and Snapchat and getting followers engages by allowing live interactions. Short enough to keep attention, allowing interaction with the post/speaker all while allowing viewers to feel that they are experiencing things at the same time as others – in the moment.
How have advertisers’ expectations changed over the last 2-3 years?
Maher: In the past 2-3 years the idea that content doesn’t have to cost a lot has been widely accepted. Authentic and “imperfect” is in. It’s a great insight that allows brands to produce more content and have more interactions with consumers. However, it’s not true across every medium or content type.
What current campaign do you find especially effective?
Maher: I am impressed with the approach Billie has taken to connect with women and sell razors. Already in a disruptive category of subscription-based brands, they are taking a stand in many areas in support of all things women – not just women who shave. Their advertising does the opposite of the traditional ad “formula.” Instead of showing the solution or the problem and then the solution, it shows a proud female with underarm hair and no indication that she wants to or should shave – bucking the thinking that the best version of a women’s body is hairless.
Cynopsis also has panels lined up to discuss OTT during That Big TV Conference on Sept. 9 -10 – are you in? ‘Winning OTT Strategies’ takes place at 12:10pm on Monday, and ‘OTT: It’s an AVOD World’ at 1:45pm on Tuesday. It’s going to be a huge theme weaved into all discussions as we discuss the opportunities ahead. Secure your pass today!

SOCIAL GOOD
NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises launched #LatinoStrong, Unidos Contra e Odio, an initiative dedicated to supporting the Hispanic community in the U.S., following the recent tragedies in El Paso, TX and Dayton, OH. Under El Poder En Ti, Telemundo’s corporate social responsibility program, the network will implement the initiative to offer resources to help Hispanics feel secure and safe in their communities. “As the Spanish-language network in the U.S. representing 60 million Latinos, it is our responsibility and commitment to U.S. Hispanics to provide support during these difficult times,” said Christina Kolbjornsen, Senior Vice President of Corporate and External Affairs.
Comcast is expanding eligibility for the Internet Essentials program, which provides affordable internet access to low-income families. The program, which costs $9.95 a month, will be offered to low-income applicants even if they do not have school-aged children, a change from previous practice. “This will be our twelfth time expanding the service since we launched the program eight years ago,” said David L. Cohen, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer of Comcast NBCUniversal. “Over the years we have made the service available to families with school-aged children, low-income veterans and even seniors in pilot programs across the country.”
TECH TALK
Google is making it easier to find and listen to podcasts. The internet giant is now providing podcast episodes in search results based on analysis of the topics in a given show. And it will also let users play back the podcast directly from the results page. According to Google, its index spans over 2 million podcasts across the web. Now, when searching for a podcast about a topic on Google, it will show users playable episodes in search results alongside webpages, news, images and videos.
Facebook is veering into the subscription VOD waters, albeit as an aggregator and reseller. The company is launching a small-scale test to sell subscription VOD services directly to users. Initially, these subscriptions will be available for four services, BBC and ITV’s BritBox, CollegeHumor’s Dropout, MotorTrend App and Tastemade Plus, and only in the U.S. Look for them to roll out over the next few weeks.
STREAMING
CBS Television Stations and CBS Interactive are accelerating launch plans for CBSN Local, the company’s local direct-to consumer streaming news service, in all 13 major U.S. markets where CBS Television Stations have local news operations. CBS was the first major media company to debut local OTT news services when CBSN New York premiered in December 2018 and CBSN Los Angeles went live in June 2019. CBS Boston is expected to launch soon, with CBSN San Francisco Bay Area scheduled to make its debut during the fourth quarter of the year.
EPIX announced its launch on the ATT&T TV app for $6 per month. It follows EPIX and AT&T’s recently announced distribution agreement and the net’s debut across DirecTV’s satellite platform on May 19.
