Twitter is addressing a security bug that allowed people to enter a phone number or email address into the log-in flow in an attempt to learn if that information was tied to an existing Twitter account. “In July 2022, we learned through a press report that someone had potentially leveraged this and was offering to sell the information they had compiled,” said Twitter in a blog post. “We confirmed that a bad actor had taken advantage of the issue before it was addressed.” Twitter is notifying the account owners it can confirm were affected, but noted, “we aren’t able to confirm every account that was potentially impacted, and are particularly mindful of people with pseudonymous accounts who can be targeted by state or other actors.” The company is advising users not to add a publicly known phone number or email address to their Twitter accounts, and to enable 2-factor authentification.

In the ongoing battle between Twitter and Elon Musk, the billionaire tweeted over the weekend that if Twitter provides their method of determining bot activity on the platform, then his $44 billion deal to buy the company should proceed. “However, if it turns out their SEC filings are materially false, then it should not.” A trial date has been set for October over Musk’s attempt to back out of the deal.

Facebook is closing shop. Beginning on October 1, users will no longer be able to host Live Shopping events on Facebook. While they will still be able to broadcast live events, they won’t be able to create product playlists or tag products in their Facebook Live videos. “As consumers’ viewing behaviors are shifting to short-form video, we are shifting our focus to Reels on Facebook and Instagram, Meta’s short-form video product,” said the company in a blog post.

TikTok is pacing to surpass Facebook in influencer marketing spend this year, and will overtake YouTube by 2024, according to Insider Intelligence. Instagram is still tops in the field, on track to grab $2.23 billion in spend in 2022 versus $774.8 million on TikTok.

Google’s Duo is getting rebranded as Meet, combining the features from both messaging apps. In the coming weeks, users who download the Google Meet app will receive the new version. A Meet Original app will remain, but eventually be phased out.

The growth of mobile usage that started during the pandemic is still on the rise post-lockdown, according to data from data.ai. Markets seeing apps used more than four hours a day now include Indonesia, Singapore, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, India, Japan, South Korea, Canada, Russia, Turkey, the US and the UK. Instagram was the top app worldwide by downloads, while TikTok was #1 in consumer spend.

Music streaming company SoundCloud plans to lay off about 20% of its global workforce. “During this difficult time, we are focused on providing the support and resources to those transitioning while reinforcing our commitment to executing our mission to lead what’s next in music,” said a SoundCloud spokesperson.

Ocient’s report, “Beyond Big Data: The Rise of Hyperscale,” forecasts exponential data growth. A survey of 500 technology and data professionals who are managing active data workloads of 150 terabytes or more, found that 97% of respondents indicated that the volume of data managed by their organization will grow over the next one to five years, and 72% of C-level executives expecting the volume to grow “very fast” over the next five years. Ninety-eight percent of respondents agreed it’s somewhat or very important to increase the amount of data analyzed by their organizations in the next one to three years.

Sinclair Broadcast Group has signed a multi-year agreement with Comscore to deploy Comscore Consumer Intelligence across its sales organization. “Comscore has supplemented its local television currency with a consumer-focused, rather than demographic focused offering that provides in-market consumer shopping behavior. This allows television to more effectively compete with digital giants that have siphoned media dollars from television,” said Carol Hinnant, Chief Revenue Officer, Comscore.

Apple has expanded App Store Ads. New ad spots can be found on the App Store’s Today tab, and in the You Might Like section.

Spectrum Reach, the advertising sales business of Charter Communications, has expanded the capabilities of its self-service online media planning tool, Ad Portal. “Advertising on any screen should be easy to buy and execute,” said Michael Guth, SVP, Marketing, Spectrum Reach. “With Ad Portal, we have simplified the process by offering a do-it-yourself solution for businesses to deliver their message to more customers, on more screens, through live TV and streaming TV advertising.”

Commerce media company Criteo has completed of its acquisition of adtech platform Iponweb. “Together with Iponweb, we expect to have significant scale and differentiated first-party data capabilities to meet the fast-growing demand for Commerce and Retail Media solutions on the open internet,” said Criteo CEO Megan Clarken.

Criteo was found to be in breach of European Union data privacy laws and slapped with a $65 million sanction in a preliminary decision. An investigation found the French company accuses Criteo of using techniques designed to profile internet users so they can be targeted with behavioral ads and have advertisers pay for “individual-level shopper predictions.” “We find the merits of this report to be fundamentally flawed, and the proposed sanctions to be incommensurate with the alleged non-compliant actions,” said Criteo chief legal officer Ryan Damon in a statement. “Criteo continues to uphold the highest privacy standards, and operates a fully transparent and regulatory-compliant global business.”

Customer experience intelligence platform DSQO announced the launch of Outcomes Lift, a product measuring the full incremental impact of cross-platform advertising campaigns on marketing funnel outcomes. Outcomes Lift provides advertisers with increased visibility into the customer experience journey, from search to e-commerce transactions, formerly obscured by limited access and deprecated methodologies. “Outcomes Lift illuminates the pervasive blind spots that existed even before the deprecation of cookies and other outdated identifiers,” said Stephen Jepson, EVP, Advertising Effectiveness, DISQO. “Our Brand and Outcomes Lift products are setting the bar in ad measurement because, rather than stitching together workarounds from incomplete data sources, we’ve invited people to share their experiences passively and directly through our platform.”

Data platform Lytics has integrated new security and privacy tools into Google Cloud. “In the past 24 months, we have rearchitected our platform, introducing new products, to help clients take advantage of our technology across multiple cloud data warehouse,” said Jascha Kaykas-Wolff, President, Lytics. One new feature, “Private Instance,” offers a managed service of Lytics’ platform to increase the flexibility of the server’s location.

DoubleVerfy announced results of a study examining how Connected TV ad campaign performance improves when advertisers can solve for viewability challenges. Campaigns targeting Fully On-Screen CTV environments saw stronger performance in:
· Increased Video Completion Rate: When targeting environments that only display ads when the TV is on and the ad is 100% on screen, VCR can be 18% higher.
· Improved Attention Levels: DV found that improving ad exposure correlates with increased brand awareness and favorability.

STREAMING

HBO Max and discovery+ will merge into a single streaming platform next summer. “At the end of the day, putting all the content together was the only way we saw to make this a viable business,” JB Perrette, CEO and president of global streaming and games for Warner Bros. Discovery, told analysts on an earnings call. Combining the two services post-merger is aimed at cutting churn and ensuring there is “something for everyone in the household,” said Perrette. And once that service is established, a FAST offering to serve as an “entry point” will be explored, said WBD CEO David Zaslav.

Paramount+ is being added as a premium subscription within the Roku Channel this month. Users can subscribe to the Paramount+ ad-supported ($4.99) or ad-free ($9.99) tiers. The guide will allow consumers access to Paramount+ live content from the NFL on CBS, UEFA, CBS News and “Entertainment Tonight,” as well as their local live CBS station.
