Good morning. It’s Thursday July 30, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

The World Series of Fighting is getting a familiar face, announcing that longtime media executive Carlos Silva is joining the company as its CEO. Silva most recently served at Back9Network, and was president and COO of the Universal Sports Network. Silva will work with President Ray Sefo to continue growing the organization.

"I am excited to join one of the premier and most dynamic combat sports franchises on the planet in World Series of Fighting," Silva said in a statement to reporters. "They have a tremendous team of media and MMA industry veterans in place that works well with the blue-chip team at NBCU, our television partner that is helping us usher the company into its next chapter of growth."

ON THE AIR

The IOC handed Dentsu Inc. the exclusive broadcast rights for 22 Asian countries for the XXIII Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018, and the Games of the XXXII Olympiad Tokyo 2020, as well as the Olympic Games in 2022 and 2024. Countries are set to include Afghanistan Brunei, Cambodia, Chinese Taipei, East Timor, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

The Yankees’ 21-5 beat down of the Rangers Tuesday notched 823,000 viewers for FOX Sports 1. That makes it the most-watched MLB regular season game in the history of that channel. In addition, with 268,000 viewers in the A18-49 demo, the channel set a record in that category as well.

Speaking of FOX Sports, the channel got a victory for FOX UFC Fight Night: Dillashaw vs. Barao 2 on Saturday. The broadcast notched a 1.7/4 from 8-10:30p, with an average of 2.8 million viewers tuning in on FOX. The was good enough for a 13% rise over last year’s comparable 1.5/3, and ranked as the top-rated sports event of the day and ranked first for the night in primetime among the broadcast networks across key demos including Men 18-49 and Adults 18-49.

Tennis Channel is going deeper with Washington DC’s Citi Open, announcing that – starting with the first match Monday  the network will offer more national on-air coverage than ever before. The network will also have a boost its on-site presence, echoing its approach at the likes of the French Open and the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. Overall, more than160 total hours of coverage are on deck this year, including more than 60 live match hours and more than 95 encore hours. Each day of the tournament begins with live pregame show Tennis Channel Live at the Citi Open, with hosts Brett Haber and Tracy Austin, along with Mardy Fish preview the day’s match play.

NBCSN’s The Men in Blazers Show returns to TV on Monday at 11p. Soccer personalities Michael Davies and Roger Bennett will join NBC Sports Group’s Premier League analysts Robbie Earle and Robbie Mustoe in the debut episode to preview the 2015-16 season. NBC Sports Group’s coverage of the 2015-16 Premier League season kicks off on Saturday, August 8.

The National Hockey League locked in a new five-year deal with Bridgestone to continue as the Official Tire of the NHL and return as title sponsor of the NHL Winter Classic. The Pac-12 made adidas the Official Athletic Apparel and Athletic Footwear partner of the Conference and all Pac-12 Championship events in a three-year deal. The agreement also makes the brand the presenting sponsor of Pac-12 Sports Report, Pac-12 Networks’ studio show. adidas will also be integrated into some of Pac-12 Networks live event programming with on air talent and production staff wearing adidas apparel. Pac-12 staff and volunteers will also be outfitted in adidas apparel at Conference championship events.

The Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) announced that John Paul Mitchell Systems is boosting its partnership investment in the AVP tour this season. Paul Mitchell schools and stylists will be on site at all seven AVP tour stops as well as the FIVB St. Petersburg Grand Slam, donating their time and expertise to cut and style hair for charity. Fans who visit the Paul Mitchell booth will also receive complimentary consultations and product samples.

The Dew Tour will pay a visit to LA for three days of skateboarding-only competition from Aug. 14-16 to “focus exclusively on the sport, lifestyle, art, music and culture of skateboarding.” Events will be centered around the Ace Hotel, and feature competitions in street, vert and the popular streetstyle discipline created by the Dew Tour three years ago. In addition to the skate competitions, Dew Tour Los Angeles will also feature sponsor activations, art exhibits, autograph signings and concerts. A complete telecast schedule and concert schedule will be announced in the coming days.

The Players’ Tribune announced the launch of The Players’ Tribune: TPT Assist, a new cause-related platform that gives athletes the opportunity to share first-hand, “their impactful philanthropic endeavors through written features, videos, event activations, original photography, and social media.” The platform debuted with an introduction from Derek Jeter, and a feature from NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal. “Giving back and helping others have always been important to me, which is why I created my own foundation,” said Jeter, the founding publisher of The Players’ Tribune. “Many of my peers in the athlete community are also using their influence in positive ways to assist others and create social change. TPT Assist allows athletes the opportunity to share how they are impacting lives in big ways.”

Peter King’s MMQB site debuted a redesign this week, with the editor breaking down the description of the changes in his weekly Monday Morning Quarterback column this week. The site is launching a new layout for year three with King stating that “I wanted us to be more diverse, particularly on our home page. Under the old system, we’d rotate four major stories on a timer. If you came to our site, you’d see one story; if you didn’t want to read, say, about Philip Rivers and the Chargers, you might hit another football site before the next story rotated in. Now, without scrolling “below the fold” on your screen, you’ll be able to see a main story in large viewand you’ll be able to, for instance, know where The MMQB Training Camp Tour is stopping today, with a link to our camp blog; you’ll find a Tweet or Quote or Stat of the day; you’ll see headlines for all the stories in the last couple of days on the site; and you’ll see the date.”

Global fantasy sports platform developer Mondogoal announced the addition of Tottenham Hotspur as its latest team partner. The partnership will debut in time for the start of the 2015/16 Premier League season and will see the Mondogoal platform promoted across Tottenham Hotspur’s digital channels. "We are excited to partner with one of the leading clubs in English football, Tottenham Hotspur,” said Shergul Arshad, CEO of Mondogoal. “Tottenham’s rich tradition of playing entertaining and attacking football and the Club’s exciting plans for the future – including its partnership with the NFL and new stadium expansion  means we cannot think of a better fanbase to push fantasy football to throughout the world."

The UFC is bringing in Eric Winter to serve as Senior Vice President and General Manager of UFC Fight Pass where he will oversee the continued global expansion of the OTT service and ensure the platform continues to deliver exclusive content and a positive user experience. Winter previously ran development of the Yahoo-owned Rivals.com, overseeing a staff of 360 writers, editors, videographers, and technologists.

Fox Networks Group named former StubHub Global Head of Partnerships & Business Development Danielle Maged to the newly created position of Executive Vice President of Global Partnerships. She will now be responsible for leveraging FNG’s media assets across its domestic and international properties to develop innovative, customized marketing solutions for the industry’s advertisers. In addition, she and the Global Partnerships team will be tasked with creating, developing, and executing strategic alliances in order to drive revenue and enhance profitability on behalf of FNG platforms, including Fox Broadcasting Company (FOX), FOX Sports, FX, National Geographic Channel, FOX International Channels, and more.
