Nickelodeon ordered 26 episodes of new live-action comedy 100 Things To Do Before High School, from Big Time Rush creator and executive producer Scott Fellows. The half-hour eps follow three best friends as they navigate the highs and lows of middle school, with the aid of a bucket list of adventures that help them overcome class cliques, bullies and teachers. The series will begin production this fall in LA. “Crossing the bridge into high school is a milestone and a journey filled with taking chances, expressing yourself and building friendships,” said Russell Hicks, Nick president of content development and production. “Kids will be able to relate to this coming of age comedy, which embodies that crazy and sometimes magical time in their lives.”
Cartoon Network thrilled Comic-Con fans with the news that the net is re-upping five original series: Adventure Time, Regular Show, Uncle Grandpa, Steven Universe and Clarence. It’s season seven for Adventure Time and Regular Showboth nominated for primetime Emmys this year. New episode premieres from Adventure Time’s Season 6-to-date have averaged almost 2.9 million Total Viewers, 1.4 million K2-11 and 1 million K6-11. Regular Show’s new episode premieres to-date have averaged nearly 2.5 million Total Viewers and 1.2 million K2-11.
Marvel mania continues at Disney. Disney XD punctuated its Comic-Con weekend by announcing the order of second seasons of Marvel’s Avengers Assemble and Marvel’s Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. Both series are in production and slated to premiere this fall on Marvel Universe on Disney XD. Year to date, Avengers Assemble is Disney XD’s No. 1 animated series in Total Viewers and Boys 6-14, and the net’s No. 2 animated series in Boys 2-11. Marvel’s Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. ranks among the net’s top performing animated series in Total Viewers.
Canada’s YTV is producing a new reality series, Mission: 4Count, that takes viewers behind the scenes to follow pop band 4Count, discovered and managed by media mogul Nick Cannon. Slated to debut in October, the series is produced by Tricon Films & Television and is starting production in Toronto. The band’s video for first single California premieres on YTV today and will go live on VEVO Aug. 12.
Thunderbirds Are Go producers gave a sneak peak of their upcoming series at Comic-Con, releasing an image of the Thunderbirds’ home, Tracy Island. Fans remember the locale as featuring a retractable swimming pool and tilting palm trees. The new take on the classic series is being produced by ITV Studios and Pukeko Pictures and is set to debut on ITV and CITV in 2015.
Hub Network will premiere unscripted, parent-child swap series Parents Just Don’t Understand on Saturday, Aug. 23 at 7p ET/4p PT. Musician/TV personality Joey Fatone serves as host and is an exec producer along with Christian Sarabia, Rabih Gholam, Bicha Gholam, Nicole M. Reed and Allegra Newman. The 22-ep series will be produced by Endemol’s 51 Minds Entertainment. In the premiere episode, “The Touchdown Maker and Cupcake Baker,” Fatone swaps the lives of a 13-year-old and his underappreciated mom of five.
In other Hub news, the network is riffing off parent network Discovery’s Shark week with its own week of animal mania, starring a much cuter and cuddlier species. The canine-filled Bark Week will run Aug. 17-22, featuring content from sister net Animal Planet America’s Cutest, It’s Me or the Dog, Bad Dog! and Too Cute!plus dog-themed family movie every night, including Cats & Dogs, 101 Dalmatians and Scooby-Doo.
On Monday, Aug. 18, PBS Kids will premiere Classic in the Jurassic, a new one-hour special from The Jim Henson Company’s series Dinosaur Train. In the special, kids travel through time with the Pteranodon family to an Olympic-type competition in which dinosaur teams representing three Mesozoic time periods compete in contests. Following the special, new episodes of Dinosaur Train will air on PBS Kids throughout the week.

Guru Studio has established interactive venture Guru Arcade to developing original digital IP and producing engaging brand extensions for existing television series. Headed by design director Ben Stirling and Producer Gareth Elliott, Guru Arcade is creating immersive 3D games for Dinopaws, the new preschool series recently launched on Treehouse and CBeebies (BBC). The company is also developing a prototype for its first original digital gaming IP; additional details will be announced prior to the game’s anticipated launch in late 2015. Guru’s first foray into interactive projects was with Jig Jag Jog, an app containing three mini games based on its own Emmy-nominated preschool series Justin Time. Launched last November, the games are featured on various platforms such as PBS’ kids portals and Sproutonline.com in the US.
Amazon Studios’ third kids series, Annedroids, is now available for unlimited streaming on Prime Instant Video, at no additional cost to Prime members. Created by Emmy-nominated J.J. Johnson (Dino Dan) and Sinking Ship Entertainment, the science-y show about a young female scientist, her human friends and their android assistants targets kids 4-7. Amazon recently launched its two first kids series, Tumble Leaf and Creative Galaxy.
International TV and movie streaming service DramaFever is bringing a slate of six new kids series to U.S. users this summer. The first two shows, 64 Zoo Lane and Pablo the Little Red Fox, are available on DF Kids. Pleasant Goat And Big Big Wolf will premiere on Aug. 4, Louie on Aug. 29, Lazy Lucy on Sept. 12 and Corneil & Bernie on Sept. 19.
A new game featuring Garfield? Yes, please. Mobile game company Pixowl is partnering with Jim Davis’ Paws Inc. to develop an original simulation mobile game featuring the world’s laziest feline for iOS and?Android, due in Q3. The game features an original storyline that reflects Garfield’s intense passion for food and will feature many of the beloved characters from the Garfield universe. Players will be challenged to help the famous fat cat as he struggles against the constraints of a forced diet.
Mordecai, Rigby, Muscle Man and Skips are up to their pranking ways in Cartoon Network Games’ new Regular Show-inspired The Great Prank War, available on iTunes, Google Play and in the Amazon Appstore.
Sega has more Sonic on the way. Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, developed by Sanzaru Games, will be released for the Nintendo 3DS on Nov. 11; Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, developed by Big Red Button, will debut for the Wii U on Nov. 18. The games are part of the company’s Sonic Boom initiative, a new Sonic experience that will usher in new gameplay based on action-adventure combat, new characters and environments as well as new storylines that will carry through the franchise’s first CG-animated series.
DHX Media received final approval from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) on the proposed acquisition of Family Channel, Disney XD, Disney Junior (English-language) and Disney Junior (French-language)together called Family Channel Businessfrom Bell Media for approximately $170 million in cash. The acquisition has now met key regulatory requirements for completion and is expected to close this week.
Coolabi Group secured six new UK licensees for forthcoming Clangers, based on the 1969 BBC series. Launching in Spring 2015 on CBeebies, the property is now licensed with magazine publisher Immediate Media Co., plus C&M Licensing, MV Sports & Leisure Limited, Gemma International, Trade Mark Collections and Rainbow Productions.
Splash Entertainment finalized licensing, merchandising and DVD deals for its series Chloe’s Closet with companies including Abbey Home Entertainment in the UK; Channel 5’s Milkshake Live Theatre Tour, UK; Universal Home Entertainment in Germany; Panini in Germany; and a master toy deal with Simba in Spain.
Lawless Entertainment is now the worldwide agent for Suzy’s Zoo, and Dina Asia Pacific Co. represents the brand for licensing and merchandising in China, Hong Kong and Macau after signing new deals with Teammate Hong Kong.
Discovery Education, provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, named Jessica Napoli director of content partnerships. Napoli joins Discovery Education from Al Jazeera America, where she most recently served as business affairs and acquisitions consultant.
