Chris McCarthy has been named General Manager of VH1, overseeing all creative and business functions for the pop culture brand. McCarthy most recently oversaw MTV2 and Logo; both nets are riding eight consecutive quarters of year-over-year ratings growth.McCarthy will report to Doug Herzog, President of the Viacom Music and Entertainment Group.


Nominations for the 36th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards were announced on Wednesday. PBS led with 57, including five each for NewsHour and Frontline. CBS followed with 44 noms, 29 of which went to 60 Minutes – the most for a single program. Access the full list of nominees here.

HBO signed ESPN alum Bill Simmons to a multi-year, multi-platform deal that includes a weekly talk show covering sports and pop culture, set to debut in 2016 on HBO’s linear service, HBO Go and HBO. Simmons will also produce content and assets for the network and its digital platforms, delivering video podcasts and features.

A+E Networks‘ four-night scripted event series, Roots has set some execs. Phillip Noyce (Patriot Games) and Thomas Carter (Coach Carter) will helm nights one and three, respectively. Directors for nights two and four have yet to be announced. Questlove, from the Grammy Award winning band The Roots, is executive music producer. .
Nickelodeon and Get Schooled, a national non-profit co-founded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Viacom, are giving one young animator the chance to win a $25,000 scholarship through the inaugural “What’s Your Nickfluence?” Animation Challenge. CBS has given a straight-to-series order for 13 episodes of BrainDead, a one-hour comic-thriller from The Good Wife creators/executive producers, Robert and Michelle King. It marks the first project from the duo as part of their three-year producing deal with CBS Television Studios.

FOX has ordered a seventh season of MasterChef. All three judges, Gordon Ramsey, Graham Elliot and Christina Tosi will be returning to the panel of the hit cooking competition. 

HBO has renewed The Brink for a second season. The dark comedy starring Jack Black and Tim Robbins was part of the network’s push to broaden its comedy brand.

Lifetime is hosting  “throw back-toback” weekend events, revisiting two iconic ‘90s programs. The net will premiere The Unauthorized Beverly Hills, 90210 Story on Saturday, October 3 at 8p, and The Unauthorized Melrose Place Story on Saturday, October 10, at 8p. 

Weather Underground is taking over The Weather Channel airwaves weekdays from 6 to 8p, beginning Monday, August 24. The new live show will go beyond the forecast to dive into the science behind the weather. Named after the scientific and community-supported digital brand Weather Underground, the interactive show will be hosted by meteorologist and storm tracker Mike Bettes.

Crown Media Family Networks and AT&T will launch Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries on AT&T U-verse TV on Thursday, July 23. Both networks will launch in high def and on the U-verse App for Tablets and Smartphones.


Bravo Media drops anchor in the Bahamas, when Below Deck returns on Tuesday, August 25 at 9p. The series follows a group of crew members living and working aboard “Eros,” a 161’ mega-yacht, during charter season. Things kick off with a half-hour preview special airing on Monday, August 10 at 10p.
Pivot has set a season three premiere date for Please Like Me. The dramedy, starring Josh Thomas, returns on Friday, October 16 at 10p. 


FOX‘s Gotham has snagged Emmy winner Michael Chiklis. The Shield alum is joining the DC Comics adaptation as Capt. Nathaniel Barnes, a series regular.

Sean Teale (Reign), Georgina Haig (Once Upon a Time) and Eddie Ramos (Teen Wolf) have been tapped to star in Incorporated, a futuristic espionage thriller pilot from Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s Pearl Street Productions, CBS Television Studios and Universal Cable Productions.

ABC’s American Crime is adding Falling Skies actor Connor Jessup to its second season cast. Jessup will play a young man at the center of accusations that roil two high schools along socio-economic lines.

Jimmy Akingbola is joining Arrow‘s fourth season as Baron Reiter. His character is the head of the Shadowspire criminal organization.

Shannyn Sossamon (Wayward Pines) is heading to Sleepy Hollow. She’ll portray a mysterious newcomer who seeks assistance from Witnesses Ichabod and Abbie, on the FOX drama.

Kendrick Sampson (The Vampire Diaries) has been tapped for a recurring role on ABC‘s How to Get Away With Murder. His character will debut in the show’s second season premiere.

Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund and Bruce Harwood, known to fans of The X-Files fans as the Lone Gunmen, are are set to appear the upcoming FOX revival. Haglance broke the news on Twitter.

Herizen Guardiola, who landed a starring role in Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming Netflix drama The Get Down, stars in TV One world premiere movie Runaway Island, premiering Saturday, July 25 at 8p.


Discovery Communications has reached an agreement to acquire full ownership of Eurosport, the leading sports channels group across Europe and Asia, for $534 million from TF1 Group. “Discovery Communications is excited to expand and deepen our investment in Eurosport as we continue to strengthen our newest global brand with locally relevant sports rights that create value for fans, advertisers and distributors,” said David Zaslav, President and CEO of Discovery Communications.


Lessons about care and responsibility for pets are highlighted in Doc McStuffings: Pet Vet, a programming event beginning Friday, August 14 at 9a on Disney Channel and WATCH Disney Junior. The multi-episode story arc is being presented in collaboration with the ASPCA, Solid Gold Holistic Pet Food and Nationwide.

Cynopsis Kids will recognize three of the industry’s top programming pioneers along with dozens of category winners, on September 18 at the Cynopsis Kids Awards breakfast. The Jim Gaffigan Show attracted a gross audience of 3.2 million total viewers on TV Land, Nick at Nite and Comedy Central, and Impastor attracted 1.7 million gross total viewers on TV Land and Nick at Nite (Live+3). The July 15th premiere for both shows, which kicked off at 10p on TVL and NAN, reached 5.6 million viewers (L+3, 1 min. qualifier, P2+, 6 telecasts, Total US).

Discovery Channel‘s Alaskan Bush People delivered 4.84 million Total Viewers P2+ on Friday, July 17 in L+3. The premiere of Treasure Quest: Snake Island was the network’s most-watched and highest-rated non-spinoff series premiere this year. In addition, Discovery Channel was #1 in all of television in Men on Friday.

Tuesday A18-49 Analysis: NBC had the most A18-49 viewers Tuesday with 1.8/7 according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. NBC’s America’s Got Talent took the top spot at 8p with 2.2/9. CBS’ NCIS, FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance and Univision’s Amores Con Trampa tied for second with 0.8/3. At 9p, NBC’s America’s Got Talent continued its stronghold with 2.4/9, followed by CBS’ Zoo with 1.0/4. Telemundo’s El Senor de los Cielos claimed #1 at 10p with 1.4/5. NBC’s Hollywood Game Night was close behind with 1.3/5.

Susanne Daniels is leaving her post as Programming Chief at MTV and heading to YouTube. Daniels will help lead the platform’s original content efforts in the newly created position of Vice President of YouTube originals.

Starz announced two promotions. Judy Batenburg has been upped from Vice President to Senior Vice President of IT Services. Vince Hostak moves from Vice President to Senior Vice President, Post-Production.

Nickelodeon named James Stephenson to the newly created position of Senior Vice President, Animation and Games, adding animation production and development to his current responsibilities of digital content creation. Stephenson served as Senior Vice President of Content Development, Digital Media.

John Piccone has been promoted to Chief Strategy Officer at Simulmedia. He last served as Chief Revenue Officer.

Patrick Ferris has been named Senior Manager of Advertising Operations at Spotlight Cinema Networks. He was previously Scheduling Manager at Screenvision. In addition, Yeva Mousiadis has been upped from Account Director to Director of Sales, Southern California Region.

Veteran television exec John Ford has been named General Manager of the Non-Fiction Producers Association, a non-profit trade group dedicated to maintaining, growing and nurturing the documentary and nonfiction TV production industry.
