Good morning. It’s Tuesday July 21, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

ESPN is shoring up its coverage for the upcoming 2015 Special Olympics World Games, which gets underway this week. Programming will include a live broadcast of the three-hour Opening Ceremony, which will be hosted by Robin Roberts, Lindsay Czarniak and Kevin Negandhi. Throughout the event, coverage will span ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN Deportes as well as ABC. Special nightly series Special Olympics World Games LA 2015 will showcase individual stories and will include a daily “competition showcase” segment that will feature play-by-play calls from the day’s action by ESPN’s Jason Benetti with reporting from Paralympic gold medal swimmer Victoria Arlen. Robin Roberts’ Countdown to the Special Olympics World Games debuts on ESPN, July 23 at 9p as well as July 25 at 2:30p on ABC and at 8p on ESPN. Overall, ESPN’s coverage will reach 170 countries and territories around the world.

ON THE AIR

FIFA formalized plans for President Blatter’s departure, announcing that the upcoming extraordinary Congress will take place in Zurich on Feb. 26 2016 when a new FIFA boss will be elected. In addition, reform topics proposed include enhanced centralized integrity checks for Executive Committee members, the introduction of term limits, higher standards of governance at all levels of football structures including confederations and member associations, as well as individual disclosure of compensation. To help the reform process, FIFA announced it was decided to set up a specific FIFA Task Force ‘Reforms’ to be chaired by a neutral chairman who should be appointed in consultation with the confederations’ presidents.

Speaking of soccer, Univision Deportes saw its coverage of Gold Cup Quarterfinals action on Univision, and simulcast on UDN, average 4.7 million viewers for the Mexico/Costa Rica battle on Sunday. That marks the largest audience for a Mexico National Team match since the June 29, 2014, World Cup match between Mexico and the Netherlands on Univision. Meanwhile, the Trinidad-Tobago/Panama match on Sunday averaged 2.1 million Total Viewers.

Europe’s MTG and the NHL locked in a five-year partnership renewal that includes broadcast and online exclusivity for NHL games across the Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. MTG also reached an agreement with the National Hockey League Players’ Association and the league to carry the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. MTG now boasts right to all regular season games, the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Stanley Cup Final, and key NHL events over the next five years.

In other international news, global agency MP & Silva is linking with China’s LeTv Sports with the company snagging rights to soccer rights that include the likes of England’s FA Cup as well as Italian Serie A, French Ligue 1, Sky Bet Football League Championship, Capital One Cup, Scottish Professional Football League, and more.

FOX Sports is playing with chemistry and will rejigger its football and college announcing lineups this season, according to SI. Charles Davis will shift to the NFL where he will be teamed with Thom Brennaman. The move means that Joel Klatt gets a bump to lead college football analyst where he will join Gus Johnson and reporter Molly McGrath on the network’s top college team.

Universal Sports Network and NBC are set to offer 48+ hours of pool action from the 2015 FINA World Aquatic Championships from July 25-Aug. 9. Universal Sports dives into coverage on Saturday at 6p with the mixed synchronized 10M platform diving finals while NBC jumps in on August 2 at 1:30p. Dan Hicks, Rowdy Gaine, and Michele Tafoya will call all swimming coverage on NBC and Universal Sports Network.

BTN and BTN2Go are set to offer more than 13 hours of live coverage of the Big Ten’s Media Days with more than double last year’s total coverage. Coverage will include the press conferences of all 14 Big Ten head football coaches, as well as remarks by Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany. On July 30 at 1p, BTN will televise remarks from Mark Dantonio (Michigan State), Tim Beckman (Illinois), Paul Chryst (Wisconsin), Randy Edsall (Maryland), Kevin Wilson (Indiana), Kirk Ferentz (Iowa) and Urban Meyer (Ohio State). Friday at 9a will see Jerry Kill (Minnesota), Jim Harbaugh (Michigan), Kyle Flood (Rutgers), Pat Fitzgerald (Northwestern), Mike Riley (Nebraska), Darrell Hazell (Purdue) and James Franklin (Penn State) address media members.

ESPN New York 98.7FM signed Michael Kay to a three-year contract extension that will keep the longtime radio voice with the station through 2018. The host of The Michael Kay Show has played to New York sports fans since 2002.

Tribeca Digital Studios and DICK’S Sporting Goods Films are producing a documentary spotlighting three-time US Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings as she prepares for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Gabe Spitzer serves as director and producer with production launching this month. "We aim to tell emotional and powerful stories that bring to life our core brand belief that sports make people better," said Lauren Hobart, Senior Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer, DICK’S Sporting Goods. "Nobody embodies this belief more than Kerri Walsh Jennings. We are excited to partner with Tribeca Digital Studios to document Kerri’s journey and show how her passion for her sport, her country and her family fuel her intense determination to become just the fifth American in Olympic history to win four gold medals in a single event."

Yahoo Sports Radio and The Palazzo Las Vegas played host to the network’s radio hosts, along with athletes and entertainers for last week’s Superweek II at Lagasse’s Stadium. The events included a studio unveiling and ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, with a red carpet and presentation by The Palazzo, comedian Rob Riggle and Yahoo Sports Radio host John Granato. Events for the week then led into the 3rd Annual TopSpin Charity Ping Pong tournament with gusts that included Hall of Fame Quarterback Warren Moon, Dr J., boxer Shawn Porter, former World Heavyweight Champion Mike Tyson, former NBA coach and player Mike Woodson, and Lagasse Stadium’s own Emeril Lagasse.
