07/20/16: Netflix greenlights second season of Making a Murderer; Twitter to live-stream NBA shows; Mr. Robot VR simulcast to stream during Comic Con


Good morning. It’s Wednesday July 20, 2016, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.


Gaze control: In virtual or augmented reality, gaze control refers to a user’s ability to control an interface and navigate an experience by looking in a certain direction. A headset generally directs gaze control by picking up on movements from the neck and head; some of the most sophisticated headsets can even pick up on eye movements.


Under a new partnership, the NBA plans to produce upcoming live shows for Twitter. (Show details are still a little murky.) The league also plans to increase the amount of video it puts out over the Twitter-owned Vine and Periscope. Live NBA games won’t be coming to Twitter, for the record – at least not anytime soon; those will remain exclusive to TV broadcasters. Lately, Twitter has been on a furious tear when it comes to snatching up live-streaming news and sports content. So far this year, Twitter has reached live content deals with the NFL, Bloomberg Media, CBS News, and the Wimbledon tennis tournament; the company is reportedly in talks with other major sports leagues.

It’s not too often that a documentary subject provides enough material for a multi-episode season of TV. The story behind Netflix’s Making a Murderer, on the other hand, has provided enough for at least two. The streaming giant announced that it’s bringing its hit docu-series back for a second season. The new episodes will once again center on Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey, whose murder convictions were explored in season one. Season 2 will focus heavily on the post-conviction appeals process, and on the legal teams of Avery and Dassey. The premiere date is yet to be announced.


Plenty of social media influencers best known on Snapchat, Vine, or YouTube have been cropping up on Facebook Live lately. And according to a report from the Wall Street Journal, that’s partly because Facebook has been paying some of them. Last month, it was reported that Facebook would shell out about $50 million to media companies and celebs to get them to use Facebook’s live-streaming platform. But this is the first report that several of those celebs are of the Internet-first variety. Internet stars working with Facebook include Viner Jon Paul Piques, as well as YouTubers Ray William Johnson and Elise Strachan. According to the Journal, Facebook is doling out a total of $2.2 million to digital celebs who use Facebook Live.

Tomorrow at 1:45PM ET, you might want to hop on over to the Within VR app. The Mr. Robot VR Experience, the first VR video tied to USA Network’s Mr. Robot, will live-stream at the aforementioned time; after the broadcast, the experience will disappear from the app. Within VR’s apps can be accessed via the Samsung Gear VR, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, or Google Cardboard (using either Android or iOS phones). The VR experience, which is launching in time for New York Comic Con, was the result of a collaboration between Within VR (the VR startup was until recently called VRSE) and Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail. The live-stream is billed as “the largest VR simulcast ever.”

In an earnings call, Yahoo disclosed that it has written down the value of its Tumblr acquisition to the tune of $482 million. The write-down stems in part from the fact that Tumblr has so far failed to live up to the lofty sales goals that Yahoo initially set for it. Yahoo acquired the blogging platform for $1.1 billion in 2013. Meanwhile, Yahoo announced revenue of $1.31 billion in Q2, which is actually up 5% year over year. It’s a strange time for Yahoo; the company is, very probably, nearing the final stages of a sale, and it’s entirely possible that CEO Marissa Mayer will have to step down once that sale goes through. Q3 should be interesting.

The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating are the purest form of showing interest digitally, since they’re organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).

Streaming Series (7/11/16 – 7/17/16)

Source: ListenFirst. The TVI Rating aggregates metrics that measure organically generated activity by fans of the TV show. The metric includes total volume of official hashtag mentions on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, along withWikipedia page views (as a proxy for organic search volume) for a show as a percentage of the total volume of the same activities for all shows.


Social media measurement company Shareablee is launching a new Machine Intelligence Technology Group. The company has hired Pierre de Lacaze to lead the division as Head of Machine Intelligence. “Our customers’ needs are increasingly shifting to better visibility across platforms and tighter ROI, and we look forward to continuing to bring new solutions to market with our talented team,” said Shareablee CEO Tania Yuki in a release. De Lacaze, who has more than twenty years of experience working with AI technologies, most recently served as a Senior Software Engineer at Adaptly.

Satirical sports and men’s lifestyle site Barstool Sports has named Erika Nardini as CEO. Hiring a woman to fill the spot may well be something of a strategic move: The site has frequently been criticized as sexist. Nardini most recently served as President and CRO of Bkstg, a start-up focused on music content. Before that, she served as AOL’s Chief Marketing Officer between 2013 and 2015. Barstool Sports is majority-owned by the Chernin Group.


Univision announced some new hires to oversee Mosaico Trading, the company’s data-driven programmatic advertising and analytics platform. David Katz, formerly the VP of Advertising Data Solutions at Time Inc., will serve as Mosaico’s General Manager and VP of Programmatic Revenue Platforms and Operations. Dayana Hoffman, previously Associate Sales Director at Pubmatic, will serve as Director of Sales, Programmatic Revenue and Platforms. And Annie Fong, previously the Director of Platform Operations at Annalect, will serve as Mosaico’s Director of Programmatic Ad Operations.

Video personalization platform IRIS.TV announced some new additions to its tech team. Ming Fang and Tony Chia have been brought on DevOps Engineers. (The positions are newly created.) Fang and Chia will manage the scaling of the company’s tech infrastructure. Fang previously served as a Service Production Engineer at Yahoo. Chia previously served as Yahoo as well, working as Senior Build and Release Engineer for Search Advertising.

Ranker, a digital media company for crowd-sourced opinions and rankings, announced some new moves. Glenn Walker, formerly the company’s Chief Strategy Officer, has been elevated to Chief Operating Officer, overseeing strategic partnerships, marketing, and video. Jake Seidler, formerly of Refinery29, will serve as Head of Business Development; Mike Pappas, formerly of AskMen and Evolve Media, will serve as Director of East Coast Sales; and Jeff Kudishevich, formerly of Gravity, will serve as Director of AdOps and Yield.

The channel, which features young people interviewing renowned individuals such as Jane Goodall, is geared toward the 8 to 12-year-old age group.
