PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil, producers behind Being Mary Jane, The Game and Girlfriends, are creating Love Is ___, a new original one-hour series for OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network. The Akils will create and exec-produce the series through their Akil Productions banner with Mara Brock Akil also serving as showrunner. Drawing inspiration from their real-life relationship, the dramedy revolves around a modern-day power couple. It’s produced in association with Warner Horizon Scripted Television and will premiere on OWN in 2018.

Universal Cable Productions spilled some production and development news at Comic-Con. The studio is developing for Syfy both Maggie Stiefvater’s book series The Raven Cycle and Hugh Howey’s post-apocalyptic novel series Sand. The Raven Cycle tells the story of 17-year-old Blue Sargent, who becomes involved with a group of private school boys on a quest to find a source of mythical power hidden deep in rural Virginia. Sand, a co-production with Imperative Entertainment, is an action drama set in a world ravaged by ecological devastation, savage winds. The novels will be adapted by executive producer Gary Whitta (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story).

UCP also is working on Sirens of Titan, with Dan Harmon (Rick & Morty) and Evan Katz (Small Crimes). The story follows Malachi Constant, the richest man in 22nd-century America, who possesses extraordinary luck which he attributes to divine favor and has used to build upon his father’s fortune. The studio also optioned Lord of Light, based on the science fantasy novel by Roger Zelazny.

Paramount Television and Anonymous Content acquired rights to develop into a television series Stupid Idiots, a workplace comedy web series written, directed by and starring Stephanie Koenig.

ICF Films, Eagle Vision and Entertainment One are underway on production of CBC original series Burden of Truth, a legal drama starring Kristin Kreuk (Smallville, Beauty and the Beast). The series started principal photography on July 2 and will shoot in and around Winnipeg until October for a winter 2018 premiere.

150 million people watched the O.J. Simpson verdict in 1995. Will you be tuned in for Simpson’s parole hearing, based on his 2008 conviction? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/

On the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana’s passing, Smithsonian Channel will honor the “people’s princess” with two specials detailing her life and death. Diana and the Paparazzi, premiering Sunday, August 27 at 8p, and Kate Winslet-narrated Diana: The Day We Said Goodbye, following at 9p, illustrate how the public’s and media’s obsession with her not only served as a catalyst for the fatal car crash that took her life, but also played a major role at her funeral and has lasted well after her untimely death.
