A 2-night survival show event on Discovery airs Wednesday, August 2 and Thursday, August 3, with new episodes of Naked and Afraid followed by the series premiere of Darkness. The new series follows survivalists trapped in the dark, tracked via infrared, thermal and remote imaging technologies.

With upfront season pretty much closed, primetime sales are up about 4%, according to Pivotal Research Group. But Pivotal’s Brian Wieser cautions reading too much into upfront numbers, noting that negotiated volumes in upfronts do not necessarily turn into actual revenues. In a note to investors last week, Wieser said, “Last year’s broadcast year’s prime time volumes grew by approximately +6%, and yet it seems likely that total revenues for owners of national TV properties are set to be flat of slightly down during the 2017-17 seaons.”

Ratings for cable news nets may be hitting highs, but TV stations’ local news viewership continue to drop. According to Pew Research Center, combined late news viewership on ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC affiliates dipped 11%, to 20.3 million in 2016 versus the year prior, and early evening news dropped 9%, to 20.7 million.
MTV game show Safeword had the net’s second-highest rated series premiere in 2 years, with a  .7 among A18-34. Lead-in Nick Cannon Presents: Wild ‘N Out scored .8, its highest rating in the demo since it returned in 2016.
