IN THE NEWS

It’s official. TLC and the Duggars are officially breaking family ties. The network has canceled reality show 19 Kids and Counting, nearly two months after news surfaced that oldest son Josh Duggar molested several children, including some of his sisters, when he was a teenager. “After thoughtful consideration, TLC and the Duggar family have decided to not move forward with 19 Kids and Counting. The show will no longer appear on the air,” according to a TLC statement, which adds, “Over these past weeks, TLC has consulted regularly with leading victims’ rights and advocacy organizations in the U.S., including RAINN and Darkness to Light, to discuss how to use this moment to address the issue and make a positive impact.” TLC is working with both organizations and the Duggars to raise awareness about the issue, and will air a one-hour documentary to air later this year.

RATINGS

Media Minute: In the most recent 12-month period (July 2014-June 2015), the median age of total television usage surpassed 50 years of age (50.1) for the first time, Brad Adgate, SVP research at Horizon Media, points out to Cynopsis – a sharp increase from the previous twelve-month period median age of 48.5. “By comparison, twenty years ago it had been 40.1,” says Adgate. Why the jump? “The U.S. population has been aging as all 75 million Baby Boomers have passed the fiftieth birthday and people enjoy a longer life expectancy. The spike in the past year however, has been has been driven by younger viewers (historically light TV users anyway) watching video content on unmeasured screens and devices.”

CBS News’ Face the Nation was the No. 1 Sunday morning public affairs program, finishing first in viewers (2.76m) and tied for first in A25-54 (0.6/03), according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for July 12. The broadcast featured interviews with Democrat presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH), and Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR.)

Tuesday’s debut of Food Network’s Chopped Grill Masters posted a .7 rating A25-54 (680K imp) with 1.4 million P2+ viewers, ranking #2 among cable within the 10pm timeslot and up 8 percent versus year-ago.

There’s no denying Caitlyn Jenner’s receipt of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPY’s helped drive the Wednesday primetime telecast’s ratings success. The 2015 ESPYs scored big for ABC, which this year took over airing the event from ESPN, drawing 7.7 million viewers and 2.2/8 in the 18-49 demo, according to Nielsen’s live plus same-day ratings. The televised awards, which also featured entertainers including Ben Affleck, shot up 250 percent in total viewers from last year, and 100 percent in 18-49.
