07.11.14 Good morning. It’s Friday, July 11, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Tiger is back and ESPN will showcase every minute of it at The Open Championship, creating a feed on ESPN3 that will follow Woods making his first start of the year in a major. Overall, ESPN is slating 65 total hours on television for the tournament, spanning July 17-20. ESPN and WatchESPN will have 11 scheduled hours of live play from the first two rounds on Thursday and Friday from 4a-3p. The third round on Saturday, July 19, will run from 7a-2:30p with the final round on Sunday spanning 6a-1:30p. Paul Azinger serves as lead analyst for ESPN’s four-day coverage of Open Championship live play, joining anchor Mike Tirico. Ian McShane again lends his voice to ESPN’s Open Championship scene-setting interstitial videos.
Joining the Tiger Woods feed on ESPN3 will be four other options, including a feed that will feature live play on the 13th, 14th and 15th holes at Royal Liverpool, a Spanish-language feed as well as an International View from the BBC/World coverage. The fifth feed will be @TheOpen Live, an “outside the ropes” presentation covering the general atmosphere of the event that also includes fan interviews and news conferences.
The Netherlands/Argentina squeaker on Wednesday scored as ESPN’s highest-rated and most-viewed FIFA World Cup match of all time. The game averaged a 4.3 household score and 6,823,000 million viewers, according to Nielsen, topping the short-lived record set by the Brazil/Germany contest. Additionally, the semifinal match now ranks as the highest-rated and most-viewed World Cup match on ESPN or ESPN2 not involving the U.S. Men’s National Team. Through 62 matches of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC are averaging 4,289,000 viewers and a 2.7 household rating per match. Lead play-by-play commentator Ian Darke and Steve McManaman call Germany/Argentina on ABC on Sunday, July 13, at 3p. Saturday will see Brazil/Netherlands at 3:30p on ESPN for the Third Place matchup.

Around the dial, Univision Deportes’ presentation of the two semifinal matches of FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014 set new ratings records, delivering its most-viewed World Cup semifinal round matches. The games averaged 5.6 million Total Viewers and 2.7 million Adults 18-49, besting the previous semifinal high set in 2010 by 34% among Total Viewers and 18% among Adults 18-49.
FOX Sports 1 saw fireworks over the holiday weekend through Red, White & Fight Week, which included UFC programming such as the UFC 175 prelims and The Ultimate Fighter Season 19 finale as well as a pair of 90-minute specials, all live from Las Vegas. The result saw FOX Sports 1 ranks as the top ad-supported cable sports network in primetime among adults 18-49 on 6/28, 7/5 and 7/6, according to Nielsen. On July 4, the UFC 175 Weigh-In on America’s Pregame delivered 205,000 viewers making it the most-watched edition of the show since its premiere. Saturday’s prelims drew 1,010,000 viewers to rank as the second-most watched UFC PPV Prelim card in channel history.

ESPN is prepping for more Colin Cowherd, launching You Herd Me on Monday at 4:30p on ESPN2. The 30-minute show will showcase the best segments from Cowherd’s ESPN Radio broadcast, and feature him introducing the segments from that day’s radio show and sometimes providing additional context. During football season, the series will also feature the best moments from Colin’s Football Show including "Cage Confessionals," interviews with top names in sports and entertainment.
Speaking of ESPN, the company’s College Football Live is slated to return on July 14 at 2:30p on ESPN. Chris Cotter hosts with a rotating cast of analysts that includes Joey Galloway, Brian Griese, Desmond Howard, Danny Kanell, Trevor Matich, David Pollack and Robert Smith.
Lindsay Davenport will be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame on Saturday at 12:30, and Tennis Channel will cover the ceremony that honors their longtime on-air analyst. The ceremony features speeches by the new Hall of Famers with fellow inductees that include Chantal Vandierendonck, Jane Brown Grimes, Nick Bollettieri, and British tennis broadcaster John Barrett. In addition to the induction ceremony, Tennis Channel will be in Newport for live coverage of the Hall of Fame quarterfinals, semifinals and finals.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. made it official, announcing that his next fight will be a rematch against Marcos Maidana on Sept. 13 at the MGM Grand Garden and carried on Showtime PPV. Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions, confirmed to Yahoo Sports that the bout will be co-promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Mayeather Promotions. A venue for the card was not named.
Turner Sports wraps up over three decades of NASCAR broadcasts on Sunday with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series from New Hampshire Motor Speedway at 1p. Adam Alexander will call the race and host the studio show alongside analysts Kyle Petty, Wally Dallenbach andLarry McReynolds. In addition, veteran reporters Ralph Sheheen, Marty Snider, Matt Yocum and Chris Neville will patrol pit road. TNT continues to celebrate Turner Sports’ top moments from 32 years of NASCAR coverage with a special thematic feature during Countdown to Green served by Sonic.
NBC Sports Group was nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards for its coverage of the Opening Ceremony of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Categories included Outstanding Special Class Program, Outstanding Art Direction for a Variety Special, Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction for a Variety Special and Outstanding Technical Direction/Camerawork/Video Control for a Miniseries.
Raycom Sports’ Havoline Football Saturdays begins its eleventh season this weekend. The season will see six one-hour episodes and will be hosted by Tim Brando and syndicated in 92 markets throughout the country.
Coverage of The 2014 ESPYS on Wednesday will open with The 2014 ESPYS Countdown Show presented by Capital One live from the red carpet at 7p. The program will be hosted by Hannah Storm with live updates from Michelle Beadle, Bill Simmons and Jalen Rose as well as celebrity and athlete interviews with Cari Champion.
SiriusXM announced that Greg McElroy, who quarterbacked the Alabama Crimson Tide to a BCS National Championship title in 2010, joined the slate of hosts on SiriusXM College Sports Nation, channel 91. McElroy and SiriusXM’s Taylor Zarzour will host The First Team, a new morning show on SiriusXM College Sports Nation which will debut Monday and run live on weekdays from 7-10a.

The NBA introduced the logo for NBA All-Star 2015 in New York City. The logo was inspired by the design of the “iconic public transportation signs that adorn many corners of America’s largest city, the logo includes colors reminiscent of the subway and bus lines that connect each of the five boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island.” For the fifth time, New York City will host the All-Star Game, with Friday and Saturday nights’ festivities originating from Barclays Center in Brooklyn and Sunday’s All-Star Game taking place at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan.
Now that the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl moniker has flown the coop, the Arizona postseason college football game is getting back to its roots, announcing that the annual matchup will now be known as the Cactus Bowl. It will be played in Tempe, AZ on Jan. 2 this year and shown on ESPN. "Our new name represents an iconic symbol for the state of Arizona," said Mike Nealy, the bowl’s executive director. "The name will also resonate with the thousands of fans traveling to the Southwest to experience our great bowl game and unmatched hospitality."
The ATP locked in a two-year renewal of its partnership with Lacoste. The deal will see the famed croc logo continue to adorn staff at all ATP events, including the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals until 2015.
