07/10/15: ESPN plots Open coverage; Learfield hits the Front Row; NBA2K makes sound waves

Good morning. It’s Friday July 10, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

ESPN hits The Open next week with a lineup of 65 hours of programming of all four rounds from July 16-19. ESPN and WatchESPN serve up 11 scheduled hours of live play from each of the first two rounds on July 16-17 from 4a-3p, while the third round on July 18 runs live from 7a-2:30p and the final round on July 19 at 6a-1:30p. One new element in the works will include a three-hour telecast of the Champion Golfers’ Challenge at 11a on July 15 on ESPN2. Of course, SportsCenter will originate from the site of the championship with a one-hour special SportsCenter at The Open program on July 15 at 2p on ESPN2. Mike Tirico serves as lead announcer and will be joined by Paul Azinger. In addition, ESPN3 offers golf four options for a second-screen experience during The Open that includes: a daily Featured Players feed; a feed of the famous “Road Hole” at St Andrews; and a Spanish-language feed. 

ON THE AIR

FOX Sports’ Summer of Soccer continues to be hot, following record coverage of the Women’s World Cup, the U.S. Men’s National Team’s opening match of the CONCACAF Gold Cup against Honduras on July 7 racked up 986,000 viewers, according to Nielsen, to become the most-watched non-FIFA Women’s World Cup soccer match in FOX Sports 1 history.

Meanwhile, Univision Deportes, on day two of 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup coverage, saw the Costa Rica/Jamaica match on UniMas and UDN, average 1.3 million Total Viewers 2+ and 834,000 Adults 18-49. Later, the El Salvador/Canada contest averaged 1.3 million Total Viewers 2+ and 816,000 Adults 18-49.

NBC’s opening NASCAR Sprint Cup race, the Coke Zero 400, averaged nearly 4 million viewers for the channel, despite the weather difficulties. With a 2.7 household rating, that was up 13% from last year’s coverage of the race on TNT, which was also rain-delayed.

NBC Sports also reports that, through 5 stages of the Tour de France (July 4-8), NBCSN’s live morning telecasts of the 2015 race have averaged 312,000 viewers. That is up 9% over numbers from the same point in last year’s event, with 104,000 viewers in the Adult 18-49 demo (up 30%).

The 2015 ESPYS revealed its list of presenters for the July 15 ceremony, which is hosted by Joel McHale. This year’s scheduled presenters include (in alphabetical order): Mike Epps (Survivor’s Remorse), Julie Foudy (analyst/retired professional soccer player), Ed Helms (Vacation), Andre Iguodala (Golden State Warriors), LeBron James (Cleveland Cavaliers), Chris Long (St. Louis Rams), Danica Patrick (NASCAR driver), Richard Sherman (Seattle Seahawks), Britney Spears ("Britney: Piece of Me"), Kiefer Sutherland, Vince Vaughn (True Detective), JJ Watt (Houston Texans) and others. Crown and the M.O.B will perform as the ESPYS house band and there will be a special performance by fun.’s Nate Ruess.

NBCSN will launch a new automotive reality series, Mobsteel, following “a Detroit-based custom car shop that transforms vintage American cars into modern-day street machines.” The eight-episode run debuts Aug. 16 at 6p, immediately following NBCSN’s coverage of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Pure Michigan 400 from Michigan International Speedway. “We’re excited to add Mobsteel to our growing portfolio of automotive and motorsports properties,” said Ron Wechsler, Senior Vice President of Original Programming and Entertainment, NBC Sports Group. “We understand our motorsports audience is also deeply passionate about American car culture. Mobsteel represents the birth and heart of that culture, the ‘Motor City’ — Detroit.”

Three new episodes of After Dark with Rick Fox Presented by Jeep are slated to begin starting tonight at 1a on NBA TV. The three shows will focus on Las Vegas with episode two airing July 18, at 1a and the third installment on July 19 at 11p. Fox will spend time with his co-stars from the recently released film Dope, in the first ep, taking a behind-the-scenes look at the movie’s recent premiere with producer and narrator Forest Whitaker, along with a visit to the recording studio with hip hop artist A$AP Rocky.

The Southland Conference and ESPN locked in a five-year rights deal that will serve as the largest and most extensive media agreement in the 52-year history of the Conference. The agreement will see a minimum of 120 Southland Conference sports events carried live on an ESPN platform over the span, including an annual telecast of the men’s basketball championship on ESPN or ESPN2.

Look for Women’s World Cup star Carli Lloyd on The Late Late Show with James Corden on Monday at 12:35a on CBS. The visit marks Lloyd’s first late night talk show appearance since winning the World Cup Championship

The USA TODAY Sports Media Group is partnering up with Znaptag to bring Znaptag’s Reverse Image Search technology to USA TODAY Sports Images’ photo aggregation platform. The technology will scan and index USA TODAY Sports Images’ entire catalogue of sports photos, which provides the ability to understand the meta-data from every image, including the content in the image and the URL of where it is published. This allows for precise contextual targeting of in-image based rich media ads.

UFC is looking a little different. The AP reports that the promotion has slightly altered its logo in a redesign, slightly altering the “C” to look “more fluid, more balanced, more professional.” Troika let the charge in the redesign. "We took it to Dana, and Dana said, ‘I don’t think I can look at our current logo anymore,’" said Heidi Noland, the UFC’s Vice President of Global Brand Creative in the story. "That never happens."

For the ninth consecutive year, the International Surfing Association is offering its Individual Scholarship Program to qualified, under-18 surfers around the globe. The program will distribute a total amount of $50,000 in 2015 ranging between $100-$1,000. To date, the ISA has awarded more than $228,500 in scholarship funds.

ESPN3 offers fans the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup champion U.S. Women’s National Team’s Championship Parade live from New York City today at 11a. Coverage will include the route through the Canyon of Heroes and the ceremony at New York City Hall.

OneUp Sports announced the launch of Spurs Go, the official mobile application of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. The app is currently available to download for free on all iOs and Android devices and features on-demand video, social hub to track the club’s social channels and iBeacon technology that allows fans to access content and latest offers at the stadium. In addition, the club’s dynamic Match Centre lets fans follow every kick of the game.

2K announced that NBA 2K16 will feature the “most extensive soundtrack in NBA 2K history” with three collaborators that include – hip-hop producer DJ Premier, producer DJ Khaled, and rap/pop producer DJ Mustard. NBA 2K16’s soundtrack be made up of six in-game playlists, including three lists individually curated by each producer, an international “Around the World” playlist, the 2K Classics Mixtape featuring fan favorites from previous 2K titles, and a master playlist that includes all 50 tracks from this year’s selection. The library spans hip-hop, electronic, pop, rock and alternative, from throwback tracks from the ‘70s through today’s Top 40, including The Ramones’ “Blitzkrieg Bop,” Nas’ “Represent,” and Zedd’s “I Want You to Know” featuring Selena Gomez.

EA Sports will see Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR hit stores on Tuesday, July 14th. The game will allow fans to play as new, up-and-coming superstars on the PGA Tour, including cover star Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Keegan Bradley, Rickie Fowler, Ian Poulter, Hunter Mahan and more. New features include:
