07/08/16: FOX Sports pitches its All-Star roster; NASCAR fuels 2016 engagement; NBA resets the clock


Good morning. It’s Friday July 8, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

FOX Sports revs up for the MLB’s 2016 All-Star Game on Tuesday, offering multi-platform coverage that spans FOX, FS1, FOX Sports Regional Networks, FOX Deportes, FOXSports.com, FOX Sports GO and FOX Sports Radio. Joe Buck returns for play-by-play and will be joined by John Smoltz, making his All-Star Game broadcast debut. Ken Rosenthal and broadcaster Tom Verducci report from the dugouts. Pregame coverage starts at 7p on FS1 with host Kevin Burkhardt, along with Verducci, Pete Rose and Frank Thomas. Pregame then shifts to FOX at 7:30p.


NBC News staple Tom Brokaw is heading to Rio to join NBC Olympics’ coverage of the Games. He will present features on the history of man along the Amazon River, the Gaucho cowboy lifestyle and deliver an interview with Bode Miller.

Speaking of the Olympics, E! News announced plans to hit Rio to examine the pop culture aspects of the Olympic Games. The NBCU outlet will focus on “the hottest celebrity parties, the wildest red carpets, and all of the major pop culture moments to exclusive interviews with some of the biggest names in sports and entertainment attending the festivities.” Correspondents Will Marfuggi and Zuri Hall handle microphone duties.

ESPN is adding Greg McElroy and Allison Williams to its Saturday ABC/ESPN commentator crew. McElroy will serve as an analyst and join newly resigned play-by-play voice Dave Pasch in the booth with field analyst Tom Luginbill. Reporter Allison Williams will join the team of Brock Huard and Bob Wischusen. Wischusen also extended his contract with ESPN.

Elsewhere at ESPN, the company unveiled presenters for The 2016 ESPYS on July 13. Names are set to include: Chris Berman, Stephen Curry, Skylar Diggins, Lisa Leslie, David Oyelowo, Usher Raymond IV, Lindsey Vonn, Dwyane Wade, JJ Watt and Zendaya, among others. In addition, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Basketball Hall of Famer) will be part of a special tribute to the late Muhammad Ali during the show. Critically-acclaimed artist Crown and the M.O.B will perform as the ESPYS house band, with a special performance by Andra Day.
beIN Sports announced the launch of Pit Lane, a motorsports highlight in-studio show. The half-hour is hosted by Terri Leigh and offer a look at motorcycle road racing championships, MotoGP, FIM WorldSBK and MotoAmerica. The series runs Tuesdays at 7:30p with a debut on July 9 at 4:30p.

ESPN’s July 24 edition of Sunday Night Baseball will spotlight the Dodgers/Cardinals battle at 8p, according to the company. The selection will see Dan Shulman joined by analysts Aaron Boone and Jessica Mendoza and reporter Buster Olney.

Wrapping up today’s ESPN news, the company reports that, through the first six months of 2016, ESPN topped the entire television industry  broadcast and cable  for total day live audience among men 18-34, averaging 144,000 in the demo. In addition, for the second quarter, ESPN led cable with total day audience for Men 18-34 (an average of 132,000 impressions), 18-49 (247,000) and 25-54 (227,000), according to Nielsen.

Nissan inked a three-year sponsorship for Sky Sports’ FA Premier League coverage, starting with the new season on Aug. 13. The deal will see the auto brand become the exclusive weekend sponsor for all of Sky Sports’ Premier League action and serve as the sole sponsor of all the Premier League previews, reviews, editorial articles, stats, facts and figures on Sky Sports.com. “This coming FA Premier League season is sure to be one of the most hotly anticipated in years for football fans globally,” said Jean-Pierre Diernaz, Vice President for Marketing at Nissan Europe. “With 126 live Premier League matches, Sky Sports offers customers more of the biggest, most exciting games than any other provider. The Collegiate Licensing Company extended its partnership agreement with Rice University Athletics to continue managing its trademark licensing program via a new five-year agreement that runs through 2021. The partnership will give Rice continued access to CLC’s brand protection, brand management and brand development services through a comprehensive trademark licensing program customized by CLC.


The 2016 NASCAR season has seen the organization capitalize on its tight races on digital and social with NASCAR.com averaging 9 million unique visitors a month, according to the organization. Across all NASCAR digital platforms, NASCAR Digital Media registered 484 million page views and 145 million on and off platform video views while NASCAR Mobile apps have been downloaded 670,000 times in 2016. On the social front, NASCAR social platforms drummed up 1.1 million followers since the start of the year for a markup of 11% and more than double the growth seen in the same period last year, while engagement with content on the NASCAR social platforms growing 83% year-over-year, with more than 114 million total engagements.

The NBA and TISSOT unveiled the launch of a “groundbreaking integrated timing system” and a new shot clock with LED glass technology that was developed exclusively for the league.  The new shot clock debuts today at Samsung NBA Summer League and will be integrated into all NBA arenas for the 2016-17 season. The partnership marks the first time the league will use the same clocks and timing equipment across all 29 of its arenas and integrates the 24-second, timeout, and game clocks in one piece of hardware  a first for the league. “The NBA has depended on accurate timekeeping for more than 70 years, and in all that time we’ve never had a partner like TISSOT,” said Michael Gliedman, NBA Senior Vice President & Chief Information Officer, Information Technology. “TISSOT’s expertise and groundbreaking timing system developed exclusively for the NBA will provide us with the most sophisticated shot clock the league has ever had, enhancing our game on the court and providing a sharper viewing experience for fans.”
Sports Illustrated is showcasing Ricky Williams in the newest edition of exclusive video from SI Films. Williams will touch on his “personal experience in the NFL drug testing protocol to the anguish he felt as his image was tarnished, to the perception and prevalence of marijuana in the NFL today and its potential as a medicinal tool.” The film will debut on SI.com on July 13.
TuneIn announced plans for special editions of original MLB show, “MLB on TuneIn LIVE” live from the Pepsi Block Party from 5-8p on July 10-11 and 4-7:30p on July 12 as part of its coverage of MLB All-Star Week. Listeners will also receive the sounds of Pepsi and MLB-affiliated musical artists with the “Pepsi All-Star Summer Block Party” station on TuneIn.


Another class action lawsuit has been filed against Counter-Strike: Global Offensive developer Valve on Wednesday from mother on behalf of her son, a minor. According to ESPN, the case alleges that Valve “knowingly allows and profits from teenagers participating in illegal, unregulated and underage gambling of in-game cosmetic weapon skins through third-party sites.” The suit was updated to include CSGO Lotto Inc., Trevor "Tmartn" Martin and Thomas "ProSyndicate" Cassell, who were called out for playing and winning on the platform without disclosing that they owned the site.

ELeague Commissioner Min-Sik Ko tweeted that both Team X and SK Gaming have been disqualified from participating in the tournament for the rest of the season after the teams’ recent roster changes did not meet league rules. ESPN reports that Cloud9, Counter-Logic Gaming, Team Solomid, NRG esports, Echo Fox, and Team Liquid all signed a petition to prevent the new SK Gaming team from playing in ELeague.
