Good morning. It’s Tuesday July 5, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

NBC Sports’ return to NASCAR this season saw the Coke Zero 400 crank up a primetime victory for NBC, as the race posted 5.7 million viewers with a 3.4 Nielsen fast national rating. That marks a 43% surge over the event’s 2015 viewership, with the 10:45-11p quarter hour hitting 6.5 million viewers. On the digital front, the race generated 2.9 million live minutes of streaming on the NBC Sports app, for an uptick of 15% over last year.

ON THE AIR

UFC 200 will hit uncharted waters, running live in 4K on July 9 for the first time via OTT. The company is partnering with NeuLion for the occasion, with coverage both live and on-demand through the NeuLion designed UFC 4K Android App on Sony Smart Ultra HD Televisions.

ESPN expands its NBA coverage this summer with a 98-game summer league slate across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3 from Las Vegas, Orlando and Salt Lake City. The schedule is highlighted by the 25-game telecast schedule from Samsung NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, which tips off on ESPN at 8:30p on Friday. All in, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will combine to televise the 25 games from Las Vegas, with ESPN3 carrying an additional 42 games, bringing the Las Vegas total to all 67 games. Play-by-play commentators Mark Jones, Chris Hassel and Alvaro Martin, and analysts Brad Daugherty, Jon Barry, Tom Penn and reporter Cassidy Hubbarth.

The International Boxing Association locked in a partnership with IMG for the sale and distribution of worldwide broadcast rights for the APB/WSB Olympic Qualification Tournament to be held in Vargas, Venezuela this week. The deal marks the first AIBA event to benefit from the recent change in the AIBA statute.

Univision Deportes announced the Balon de Oro Awards to honor the top athletes in the Liga MX with performances from Intocable, Adriel Favela, Alejandra Guzman, Banda el Recodo, Lupillo Rivera with Helen Ochoa, Noel Torres and more. The ceremony runs July 9 on the Univision Network and UDN at 8p. Despierta America’s Alan Tacher hosts with the participation Karina Banda.

MLB Network serves up two editions of MLB Network Presents this month. The first focuses on former Tiger Mark Fidrych in The Bird on Sunday at 10p. Tom Selleck narrates. The second, Against the Odds: The Mike Piazza Story, is narrated by Matthew Broderick and runs July 13 at 10p.

Mike Garafolo is heading to NFL Media where he will contribute to all NFL Media platforms, including NFL Network, NFL.com and NFL Now. Garafolo joins NFL Media from Fox Sports 1, where he covered the NFL nationally.

Time Warner Cable SportsNet is bringing in longtime LA Times reporter Mike Bresnahan as its exclusive “Lakers Insider” for the network. Bresnahan will contribute across multiple platforms on TWC SportsNet and will play a significant role in all of the network’s Lakers studio shows, including Access SportsNet: Lakers and #Lakeshow.
 
Quick hits from dark week:
·       FS1’s coverage of Chile’s win over Argentina in the final of the Copa America Centenario delivered 2,979,000 viewers to the network. The match ranks as the most-watched men’s soccer match not involving the US National Team ever on FS1 or the FOX broadcast network.
·       ESPN is tapping NHL studio analyst Barry Melrose, SportsCenter anchors Steve Levy and John Buccigross and former NHL goalie Kevin Weekes to call telecasts of the World Cup of Hockey 2016 starting Sept. 17. In addition, Hall of Famers and former NHLers Chris Chelios and Brett Hull will join ESPN to provide studio analysis and work with hosts John Saunders, Adnan Virk and John Buccigross.
·       ESPN International and the NFL inked a four-year rights renewal to NFL games in Spanish-speaking Latin America. The new agreement starts this season and includes rights to pre-season games, regular-season games, the AFC Playoffs, the Pro Bowl and one of the Super Bowl as well as linear television distribution of NFL RedZone.
·       The PGA TOUR released its 2016-17 season schedule of 47 FedExCup tournaments, with changes that include the opening week of the season, with new sponsorship of the Safeway Open (Oct. 13-16) at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, Calif., which also begins the TOUR’s seven-tournament run through November.
·       UFC renewed ties with Joe Hand Promotions in a multi-year extension of their Pay-Per-View television distribution agreement. With the extension, UFC will maintain Joe Hand Promotions as its exclusive commercial distributor throughout the United States.
·       Golf Channel scored the network’s most-watched second quarter in its history, drawing 24 million unique viewers in second quarter (up 3% vs. 2Q ’15) and saw 51 programs average more than a half million viewers, according to Nielsen.

NBC Olympics is partnering with Samsung to offer VR coverage of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games to authenticated users of compatible Samsung Galaxy smartphones and Samsung Gear VR via the NBC Sports app. The alliance marks the first time Olympics programming will be available in VR. Overall, 85 hours of VR programming will be available by Olympic Broadcasting Services and supplied to NBC Olympics, including the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, men’s basketball, gymnastics, track and field, beach volleyball, diving, boxing, and fencing. All VR programming will be presented on delay, from August 6-22. 

DEWALT Tools entered an expanded partnership with Joe Gibbs Racing, adding four races to their 2016 primary sponsorship aboard the No. 20 Toyota Camry driven by Matt Kenseth for the upcoming races at Chicago, Dover, Kansas, and Homestead. DEWALT will also offer primary sponsorship for a total of six races in the NASCAR XFINITY Series for 2016.

Quick hits:
·       NFL Media, CBS, and NBC Sports will see Lexus serve as the presenting sponsor of Thursday Night Football’s halftime show in 2016. This will be the fifth season as the title sponsor of events but the first time the luxury car’s brand will be extended across three broadcasters.
·       Special Olympics and WWE are forming an international partnership “to help create change through sports.” Through the deal, WWE will support Special Olympics’ Play Unified campaign, which fosters friendships, understanding, and inclusive communities among people with and without intellectual disabilities by uniting them through the power and joy of sports.
·       The Hershey Company launched its first-ever Team USA-themed advertising campaign, “Hello From Home,” featuring gymnast and US Olympic hopeful Simone Biles joining Jordan Burroughs and Paralympic gold medalist Mallory Weggemann as part of the Hershey roster of Team USA athletes.

DIGITAL & STREAMING

Walt Disney Co. is reportedly snagging a one-third stake in MLB Advanced Media, in a deal that values the business at about $3.5 billion. Bloomberg reports that Disney will also obtain a four-year option to buy an additional 33% stake in the company.

Bruin Sports Capital snatched up sports media service company deltatre, whose clients include UEFA, FIFA, the English Premiere League, ATP, BBC, BT Sport and Fox. The new acquisition offers a range of digital and broadcast solutions, including end-to-end OTT platforms.

UFC launched its first digital trading card app, developed in collaboration with Topps. Topps UFC KNOCKOUT 16 will be available to download for free on select iOS and Android devices via the Apple App Store and Google Play and offer thousands of digital trading cards with new cards and sets released daily.

Red Bull TV is launching The Ripple Effect, showcasing the story of an innovative and inspiring band of entrepreneurs who have altered lives with game-changing products, brands and breakthroughs in the action sports industry. The series begins on July 11 and features  six 25-minute episodes that include: Nick Woodman of GoPro, Steve Van Doren of Vans, Jack O’Neill of O’Neill, Sean Collins of Surfline, Bob McKnight of Quiksilver and Bob Hurley of Hurley.
 
Learfield picked up GoVision  a provider of state-of-the-art mobile and modular LED video technology. The company will continue to operate under the GoVision name and brand, and all current employees will remain with the firm.

ESPORTS

ESPN2 is getting back into the eSports game, announcing that it will carry the Street Fighter V World Championship from the Evolution Championship Series on July 17 at 10p. “The Street Fighter V World Championship will be one of the must-see competitions from the Evo finals,” said John Lasker, vice president of programming and acquisitions, ESPN Digital Media. “We are always exploring ways to serve the growing and passionate audience of competitive gaming, and we look forward to delivering this event to fans.”

The UK announced the launch of the British eSports Association. British eSports will act as the National Governing Body for eSports throughout the country and will work in conjunction with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to help and represent players at all levels; develop a grassroots competitive video game scene that will nurture future talent; support existing professionals and provide the infrastructure to create future British global champions. The organization will be chaired by Andy Payne OBE, with Chester King in the role of acting CEO.

ESL tapped Yvette Martinez-Rea to serve as its Chief Operating Officer. Prior to joining ESL, Martinez served as Chief Operating Officer of Violet Grey, a venture-backed luxury beauty content and commerce company based in Los Angeles. In addition, Chad Perry joined ESL as VP of Production.

Elsewhere, OpTic Gaming will see Ryan Musselman serve as COO for the organization. Musselman previously served as community manager of gaming at Google.
