IN THE NEWS
Hot off the success of the “Barbie” movie, Mattel has renewed its licensing agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products. The deal includes over 50 brands and franchises, including DC Universe, “Friends,” “Seinfeld” and “Ted Lasso.” “Warner Bros. Discovery has always been committed to delivering extraordinary products and experiences to audiences around the world and through our collaboration with Mattel, we’ve been able to extend our beloved characters and stories beyond the screen,” said Pam Lifford, President, Warner Bros. Discovery Global Brands, Franchises, and Experiences. “This partnership has been a testament of the power of storytelling and innovation and together, we look forward to exploring new horizons and creating even more inspiring products that will delight fans of all age.”
Netflix ordered a second season of “King of Collectibles: The Goldin Touch,” an unscripted series following the team at Goldin Auctions, specialists in trading cards and memorabilia.
Networks are turning to unscripted series to fill programming gaps during the writers’ and actors’ strikes, but even those shows are not immune to walkouts. Ray Lalonde, a big winner on “Jeopardy!” last season, informed the show’s producers he won’t be crossing any picket lines for “Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions.” “There are now credible reports that the producers are making contingency plans to start filming the next season of the show with old and/or recycled material if the WGA strike remains unresolved,” he wrote on a Reddit thread. “I believe that the show’s writers are a vital part of the show and they are justified in taking their job action to secure a fair contract for themselves and their fellow WGA members.” Other “Jeopardy!” champs saying they’ll skip the event include Hannah Wilson, Cris Pannullo, Ben Chan, Troy Meyer, Ben Goldstein, Suresh Krishna and Luigi de Guzman.

Hulu announced a docuseries from filmmakers Erin Lee Carr, Michael Beach Nichols and Marwar Junction Productions, exploring the case of Sherri Papini, who is serving 18 months in prison for lying to the FBI about her kidnapping. The series will be executive produced by Allison Berkley, Joseph Freed and Erin Lee Carr, and directed by filmmaker Michael Beach Nichols.
Tubi picked up mockumentary “Underdeveloped,” with a debut date set for Friday, September 8. The series from Brian A. Metcalf focuses on a group of failed producers working at a production company. As an independent production, the project has received a waiver from SAG-AFTRA to proceed amid the strike.

“Animals Up Close with Bertie Gregory” launches Wednesday, September 13 on Disney+. The six-part National Geographic docuseries follows filmmaker Gregory as he uses state-of-the-art equipment to capture animal behaviors.
Season five of Netflix romantic drama “Virgin River” debuts Thursday, September 7 with a 10-episode drop. The season’s final two episodes will premiere November 30 as holiday episodes.

TECH TALK
TikTok has partnered with post-purchase survey providers KnoCommerce and Fairing to give brands more insight into TikTok users. “Traditional attribution models have always struggled with an inherent flaw: they often fail to capture the full consumer journey, generally focusing on the last touchpoint before a purchase is made,” said TikTok in a blog post. “In today’s multichannel, multi-device world, this model is becoming increasingly inadequate.”
Alphabet reported 2Q23 earnings per share of $1.44 and total revenue of $74.6 billion, versus a projected $1.20 and $65.4 billion. “There’s exciting momentum across our products and the company,” said CEO Sundar Pichai in the earnings release. “Our continued leadership in AI and our excellence in engineering and innovation are driving the next evolution of Search, and improving all our services.”
The House Judiciary Committee has scheduled a vote for Thursday to decide whether to cite Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg with contempt of Congress, for failing to comply with a subpoena for information. “To date, Meta has produced only documents between Meta and external entities and a small subset of relevant internal documents,” said the committee’s report. “The Committee has a particular need for Meta’s internal documents, which would shed light on how Meta understood, evaluated, and responded to the Executive Branch’s requests or directives to censor content, as well as Meta’s decision-making process to censor viewpoints in the modern town square.”
STREAMING
Over 70% of viewers used any given app three months or less out of the year, according to The Streaming Index: Spotlight on Churn, from Samsung Ads. The top 15 apps were stickier, with almost half of their viewers active more than three months out of twelve, but only 30% were active more than half the year. Other finding include:
* Greater monthly time spent with an app is directly correlated with a higher number of months active during the year.
* Once a streaming app user has been inactive for 4 months, they have churned out, moved on to other apps and are unlikely to return.
* App publishers can drive engagement by marketing to current users.
Bottom line? “User engagement is critical for long-term health,” says the report. “As Americans figure out which 3-4 apps they will use on a regular basis, app publishers must not only attract trial, but work to encourage regular usage.”
COMING UP
Max comedy special “Tracy Morgan: Takin’ It Too Far” premieres Thursday, August 17. The “30 Rock” star tackles subjects like dating in his 50s, his dysfunctional family and the 2014 car accident that left him with a traumatic brain injury.
NewsNation will present special coverage of the House Oversight Committee UFO Hearings on Wednesday, July 26 beginning at 10a. The live report will be anchored by senior national correspondent Brian Entin from Chicago.
FOX News Books will release its eighth book on Tuesday, October 10. Cooking with Friends, by “FOX & Friends First” co-host Carley Shimkus, will feature dishes from network personalities and special guests, along with the stories behind them.
SPORTS ROUNDUP
“Well, that was awkward,” posted Shaka Hislop, the ESPN analyst who collapsed on-air on Sunday. “Listen, every so often life gives you a moment to pause, and this was mine.” The 54-year-old former soccer player thanked his family and colleagues for their support, and said, “My response now has to be to seek out the best medical opinion that I can get and listen to what my doctors have to say.”
The Johnsonville SuperHole IV Championship, the American Cornhole League’s celebrity pro-am tournament for charity, will take place Friday, August 4 from 7-9 p, and broadcast live from Rock Hill, SC on ESPN2.
