TBS late-nighter “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” has been canceled after seven seasons. “As we continue to shape our new programming strategy, we’ve made some difficult, business-based decisions,” said a TBS spokesperson. “We celebrate this extraordinarily talented cast and crew and look forward to exploring new opportunities to work with them in the future.” Last season, the show averaged 466,000 viewers.

Dropped by its last major distributor, Verizon Fios, right-wing One America New Network is asking viewers to lobby Comcast and Charter to sign carriage agreements. “OAN has tried for years to get on Comcast and Charter Spectrum TV. You are stuck paying for LIBERAL mainstream media news,” said a message on the OAN website. “It’s time to tell Comcast & Charter Spectrum that you want OAN added to your channel lineup.” Verizon Fios’ decision to drop the network, effective July 31, came after it said OAN “failed to agree to fair terms”; DirecTV ended OAN carriage in April.

The National Cable Television Cooperative, representing 700+ independent communications service providers, unveiled a new name, logo and vision. The org has been renamed The National Content & Technology Cooperative, with a new tagline, “Stronger Together,” emphasizing that success happens by collaborating. “Our new name and logo are just the beginning of how we are retooling ourselves,” said NCTC CEO Lou Borrelli. “Our design reflects our commitment to delivering savings, solutions and strategies in everything we do.”

Showtime announced last week that late-night talk show “Desus & Mero” would not return for a fifth season because the show’s hosts, Desus Nice and Kid Mero, are “pursuing separate creative endeavors moving forward.” Puck shed light on the abrupt end of the duo’s partnership, explaining their manager, Victor Lopez, was the cause of the split. Sources told Puck that Showtime had allegedly asked Lopez to stop working on the show due to accusations of abusive behavior toward employees. While Desus agreed with the network’s decision, Mero felt it would be disloyal.

Broadcast and cable networks posted modest gains this upfront season, according to estimates from Media Dynamics. Broadcast networks rose 6.4%, to $9.9 billion, while cable was up 5.2%, to $10.2 billion. CPM for 30-second commercials grew 9.6% to $47.14 for broadcast; cable TV networks rose 6.6% to $23.30.

Responding to Hulu’s rejection last week of ads on midterm election issues abortion and gun safety, the executive directors of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the Democratic Governors Association said Hulu’s “censorship of truth is outrageous, offensive, and another step down a dangerous path for our country.” Ads submitted on July 15 about the GOP’s record on abortion and gun safety laws ran across Facebook, YouTube, Roku, and broadcast and cable TV, but not Hulu.

The Television Academy has announced the awards in 25 categories that will be presented during the 74th Emmy Awards on Monday, September 12 on NBC. There are no major changes from last year – Outstanding Sketch Series replaces Outstanding Variety Special, and Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special replaces Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series, as the categories alternate. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremonies will take place Saturday, September 3, and Sunday, September 4, with an edited presentation airing September 10 on FXX.

FX picked up “Mayans M.C.” for a fifth season. The renewal deal includes co-creator Elgin James signing a new multiple-year overall deal with Disney’s 20th Television. “The Mayans have battled for respect, territory and power through four intense seasons that have set the stage for an explosive fifth season that will test their very survival under ‘EZ’s’ newly claimed leadership,” said Nick Grad, President of Originals at FX. “Elgin James and the creative team, the brilliant cast, crew and our partners at 20th Television have kept fans coming back for more and we are ready to take that ride with them for another season.”

Josh Lieb, former EP of “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” has taken the reins at another Comedy Central series. “Hell of a Week with Charlamagne tha God,” rebranded for season two from “Tha God’s Honest Truth,” launches Thursday, July 28 at 11:30p under executive producers Lieb, Lenard “Charlamagne” McKelvey, Stephen Colbert, showrunner Rachael Edwards, Aaron McGruder, Karen Kinney, James Dixon and Norm Aladjem.

Studio wiip (“Mare of Easttown”) has secured further investment from Atwater Capital. “We are delighted to continue on as a supportive shareholder of wiip, a studio that’s fiercely focused on genre-defining, globally impactful content,” said Vania Schlogel, Founder and Managing Partner at Atwater Capital. “It is an exciting time to work with one of the only independent purveyors of the premium episodic content that global OTT players and their audiences are demanding, and a studio with an incredible focus on empowering top creatives to tell authentic, compelling stories.”

CBS’s adaptation of the word-twisting game show “Lingo,” hosted by RuPaul Charles, is set to start filming at UK’s dock10 studios in Media City, Salford next month.

Rodney Barnes (“Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty”) has renewed his overall deal with HBO for three more years. Barnes will continue to focus his creative efforts on stories that challenge audiences to reconsider preconceived notions and stereotypes.

Executive producer Martin Gero is replacing Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt as showrunner on NBC’s upcoming “Quantum Leap” reboot, while Dean Georgaris joins as exec producer. Lilien and Wynbrandt, who wrote the pilot, will remain with the project as executive producers; production on the series will proceed on schedule.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Season two of HBO Max’s “Sweet Life: Los Angeles” launches Thursday, August 4 with four episodes. The unscripted series from Issa Rae explores themes of loyalty, legacy and love.

All eight episodes of Hulu’s “Wedding Season” drop Thursday, September 8. The series tells the story of Katie and Stefan, who fall for each other at a wedding and begin an affair despite Katie already having a fiancé. Two months later at Katie’s wedding, her new husband and his entire family are murdered. The police think Stefan did it, while Stefan thinks Katie is the culprit.

Controversial murder cases are re-examined in ID’s “Reasonable Doubt,” back for season five on Tuesday, August 9 at 10p.

COMING UP

Antenna TV celebrates the 100th birthday of Norman Lear on Wednesday, July 27 with a 12-hour marathon of the TV legend’s shows. In addition to episodes of “The Jeffersons,” “Maude,” “One Day at a Time,” and “Archie Bunker’s Place,” the stunt will include segments of Lear talking about his shows and career.

SPORTS

The NFL officially revealed the launch of NFL+ – the league’s exclusive video streaming subscription service that allows fans to get access to live out-of-market preseason games, live local and primetime regular season and postseason games (phone and tablet only), live local and national audio for every game, NFL Network shows on-demand, NFL Films archives and more. NFL+ is available in the NFL App across all app stores for $4.99/month or $39.99/year.

The Big Ten Conference and Big Ten Network opened the doors to Big Ten Corporate Partnerships, designed to lead the conference’s league-level corporate sponsorships and partner activations. Tyler Kupper has been tapped to lead the new business as the vice president of sponsorships, with an eye to offer strategic corporate sponsorships, innovative partnership activations, television and digital media inventory and creative adverting opportunities associated with the league-level events and VIP fan experiences during the conference championships and tournaments.

The XFL pulled back the curtains on the cities and venues that its teams will call home, starting February 18, 2023. Host cities will include Arlington, Houston, Orlando, Las Vegas, San Antonio, Seattle, St. Louis and Washington D.C. In addition, the league selected the City of Arlington, Texas as its new football operations Hub, signing a three-year agreement that will provide a centralized performance facility and multiple practice venues for preseason and in-week training for the League’s eight teams.

ESPN8: The Ocho makes it return as the initiative takes over ESPN2 for 24 hours on August 5. The latest in the evolution of The Ocho includes 14.5 hours of live events that will see the Turf Wars Kickball Invitational and the US Air Guitar All-Star Air and include events such as the American Cornhole League’s SuperHole III. Other offerings will showcase corgi races, Spikeball, air hockey, World Chase Tag and Death Diving, while introducing new-to-The-Ocho distinguishable sports such as pickleball, belt sander races, bed races, financial modeling, paper wings and Teqball.

Electronic Arts and Juventus announced a new, multi-year partnership, which will see Juventus return to EA SPORTS’ renowned football video game series beginning in EA SPORTS FIFA 23, launching September 30. This partnership will see EA SPORTS become Juventus’ exclusive Sport Video Gaming Partner, with in-game integration that will feature Juventus’ stadium, Allianz Stadium, along with the club’s logo and kits. As well as the club partnership, Claudio Marchisio will join as a FUT Hero and current player Dušan Vlahovi? will also serve as an ambassador for EA SPORTS FIFA 23.

Add Google to the tech companies vying for rights to the NFL Sunday Ticket. According to The New York Times, Google’s YouTube has offered a bid for 2023 rights, along with Apple, Amazon and Disney. “A number of companies are in strong position to potentially land Sunday Ticket, but we still have a ways to go in this process,” Brian Rolapp the NFL’s chief media and business offers, told the NYT.

TECH TALK

Ahead of the August 21 debut “House of the Dragon,” HBO Max has launched “House of the Dragon: DracARys,” the official augmented reality app for the series. The app enables fans to “hatch” and raise their own virtual dragons. Each dragon will be unique to its user, and as it grows it will develop its own look and temperament driven by its keeper’s interactions with it, based on the lore from George R.R. Martin’s world. Users will also learn Valyrian words from “House of the Dragon” to command their dragon through a voice recognition system.

STREAMING

When it comes to streaming, simpler is better, according to “Monetization of Video,” a new study from Hub Research. Among viewers who consolidate access to multiple services through any kind of device (e.g. a cable box, a Roku, Amazon or Apple box, a smart TV etc.), 91% say that having access to multiple services in one device makes their viewing experience better, with more than half (52%) saying it makes the experience “a lot” better. When asked how aggregators improve the TV experience, the most common reason mentioned (39%) is that it makes it easier to watch content across all their different sources. But for many, it also makes it easier to manage the subscriptions themselves: 34% say they like the ease of adding new providers or of pausing or cancelling them (31%). And 33% say they like the convenience of consolidating multiple subscriptions into one bill.

Thema America announced an offering of FAST channels for audiences in Spain, the US and Latin America. “Thema saw an opportunity in the FAST segment and decided to capitalize on it,” said Patrick Rivet, CEO of THEMA. “Platforms around the world are actively seeking content for their audiences, and the pandemic has kept this momentum going, so this will be a great year for innovation in the FAST universe.”

Curiosity and edtech firm Macademia have partnered to add the Da Vinci Kids educational streaming and interactive learning platform to Curiosity’s Smar Bundle. The bundle, offered through Curiosity Stream, gives viewers access to seven leading subscription services dedicated to entertainment that inspires learning.

GOING GLOBAL

Principal production for Starzplay’s first German-language original series “Night in Paradise” has begun in Berlin. The six-part series based on the graphic novel by Frank Schmolke will be shot between July and October this year in Berlin and in Brussels/Belgium and will be available to stream across Starzplay’s Europe and Latin America footprint.

Endemol Shine Boomdog will produce game show “Are You For Real?” (Cuál es el Bueno?) alongside TelevisaUnivision. The new show is a format developed by Endemol Shine Boomdog, Endemol Shine Italy and TelevisaUnivision.
