PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
 
Lena Waithe (The Chi) signed a first look deal with Showtime, expanding her relationship with the network that launched her first series as creator and EP. Waithe will work with the network on comedy and drama projects, which she’ll write and produce through her Hillman Grad Productions.
 
Following record ratings of 5 million viewers per episode to rank as the second most-watched series in all cable, Paramount Network renewed the Kevin Costner-starring Yellowstone. Production on the show’s 10-episode second season will begin shortly on location in Utah and Montana, for a 2019 premiere.
 
NBC’s Hair Live! found a directing duo: Diane Paulus, the Tony Award-winning director of Broadway’s 2009 Best Revival of Hair, and Emmy Award winning Alex Rudzinski, who will serve as live television director as he did for Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert. Project is slated to air May 19, 2019.     
 
Bravo tapped Jeffrey Reiner (The Affair, Friday Night Lights) to direct four episodes of Dirty John, the true crime anthology starring Connie Britton and Eric Bana. Reiner is also set to EP the series from Universal Cable Productions, Los Angeles Times Studios and Atlas Entertainment.
 
FX is moving forward with an untitled Bob Fosse/Gwen Verdon limited series starring Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams. The project hails from Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda and Thomas Kail and Dear Evan Hansen’s Steven Levenson, Fox 21 TV Studios and FX Prods.
 
Sony Pictures Television’s International Production and Worldwide Distribution teamed to pick up Alex Rider. Eight-episode spy series charts the adventures of a reluctant teen superspy on missions to save the world.
 
J.J. AbramsBad Robot is developing a coming-of-age dramedy based on the TV-obsessed, closeted-gay childhood of TVLine founder Michael Ausiello. Ausiello is penning the script for the untitled project, which will hit the marketplace shortly.
 
Bill Simmons inked a new deal with HBO focused on creating and producing sports-themed programming, reports The Hollywood Reporter. The announcement comes on the heels of Simmons’ Andre the Giant doc, released in April.
 
Travel Channel greenlit Ghost Hunt Live (wt), a weekly live interactive series featuring paranormal investigative team Tennessee Wraith Chasers.  
 
 
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
 
Host and EP Howie Mandell took to Twitter to announce Wednesday, December 5 as the premiere date of CNBC’s all-new Deal or No Deal. Production kicks off at Universal Orlando Resort with contestants vying for a $1 million grand prize.
 
The third and final season of Ovation’s X Company bows Monday, August 20 at 10p, as the Camp X operatives press forward to finish their last mission.
 
GetTV added two new series to its roster. Debuting this fall will be Married… with Children on Monday, September 17 and The Steve Harvey Show on Monday, October 1.
 
TBS comedy Wrecked launches its third season on Tuesday, August 7 at 10p.
 
 
COMING UP
 
The Comedy Lineup: Part Two bows on Netflix Friday, August 31. Series features a mix of up-and-coming comics performing 15-minute stand-up sets about life’s issues.
 
The fourth annual WE Day Special airs Friday, August 17 at 8p on ABC. Hosted by John Stamos, it will feature a lineup including Jennifer Aniston, Dierks Bentley, The Chainsmokers, Will Ferrell, Whoopi Goldberg, Selena Gomez, Cyndi Lauper, JD McCrary, Dr. Phil, Martin Sheen, Lilly Singh, founders of the #NeverAgain movement and organizer of The March for our Lives Jaclyn Corin and Cameron Kasky and more.

For the final weeks of the 2017-2018 TV season, AMC’s The Walking Dead was the top entertainment TV show in terms of price for a 30-second commercial. National TV advertisers paid an average of $331,691 for an ad in the second quarter of the cable drama, according to Standard Media Indez. FOX’s Empire was second at $322,659 and CBSThe Big Bang Theory was third at $295,138.

Game of Thrones Will Tudor was tapped to star in a drama special about British skating legends Torvill and DeanKathryn Newton (Big Little Lies) was cast in the untitled Netflix drama series being written by Chris Keyser (Tyrant, The Last Tycoon) and being described as a Lost meets Lord of the FliesKeiko Agena (The First), John Karna (Valley of the Boom), Sprague Grayden (The Following) and Cliff Chamberlain (Altered Carbon) joined Bravo’s Dirty John.
 
 
DIGITAL DATA
 
A Change.org petition calling for the cancellation of Netflix’s upcoming series Insatiable continues to grow, having gathered over 120,00 signatures. The petition accuses the series of “body shaming.” The dark comedy stars Debby Ryan as Patty, a high school student bullied and ignored because of her weight. Her life changes after her jaw is wired shut, following a punch in the face, and she finds herself suddenly thin and ready to exact revenge on her tormenters. Series is set to premiere on Friday, August 10.
 
In other Netflix news, the streamer is taking international distribution of TNT’s futuristic action thriller Snowpiercer and Bravo’s anthology Dirty John.
 
Google Assistant’s news feeds are getting smarter. Goggle is introducing tools to help developers target specific content based on queries that send links to full articles to a user’s mobile device. Once done, Assistant will ask if the user wants another.
 
Google officially announced version 68 of the Chrome browser on Tuesday. It marks all unencrypted (non-https) pages as “not secure.” The move comes some two years after Chrome revealed its plan to promote the use of secured (https) pages across the browser.
 
Walmart and Microsoft extended an existing partnership with a five-year agreement that will enable the two companies to collaborate on machine learning, artificial intelligence and data platform solutions for customer-facing services and internal business applications.
 
 
GOING GLOBAL
 
CBS Studios International will host the world premiere screening of new Showtime limited series Escape at Dannemora at MIPCOM 2018. Show takes place in the Palais des Festival on Monday, October 15 with EP and director Ben Stiller on hand for the event.
 
Bidslate sealed a rights deal with OTT service Bigstar to distribute a package of 15 films, including Art Bastard, Mile Marker, The High: Making the Toughest Race on Earth and more.
 
Discovery is launching a digital platform for its Euro brand Quest, while looking to take advantage of its acquisition of UK soccer rights. Quest OD is a free catch-up and live streaming service for its free-to-air brands Quest and Quest Red.
 
Netflix is introducing its first European production hub in Spain at Ciudad de la Tele, a facility in Tres Cantos, Madrid. It will be the SVOD service’s central facility for its increasing slate of Spanish-language originals, including shows like Money Heist (La Casa de Papel) and Hache.
 
German crime drama Babylon Berlin is returning for a third season. Series producing partners, X Filme Creative Pool, ARD Degeto, Sky and Beta Film confirmed that shooting will start this fall in Berlin and other new locations.
 
Chalkboard TV announced a double recommission from the BBC for historical crimes series Murder Mystery and My Family and Murder Mystery and My Family: Case Closed?

RATINGS
 
The top daytime shows in syndication rallied in the session ending July 15, undeterred by continuing preemptions and strong competition from the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Dr. Phil (2.8 Live+SD national Nielsen Rating, up 8% from the week before) outperformed the talk shows for the 97th week in row and was up 4% from last year despite being in repeats.
 
Live with Kelly and Ryan (2.0, down 5%) did not air in several markets on July 13 due to breaking news. Ellen DeGeneres (1.6, up 7%), Maury (1.3, up 7%) and Steve Harvey’s Steve (1.2, up 9%) rounded out the top five.

EXECUTIVE MOVES
 
Tonia O’Connor resigned as Chief Revenue Officer of Univision. “For more than a decade, Tonia O’Connor has been a key figure in transforming Univision from a niche media asset into a major player in the U.S. media landscape,” said Univision’s board of directors said in a statement. “We greatly appreciate her leadership and the important role she played in driving the company’s growth, negotiating complex transactions and developing new revenue streams.” O’Connor’s departure follows the recent exits of CEO Randy Falco, Chief Content Officer Isaac Lee and programming head Lourdes Diaz.
 
NBC Sports Group tapped Pete Bevacqua for the newly created position of President. He will oversee programming, marketing, digital, the NBC Sports Regional Networks and all golf businesses. He was previously CEO of the PGA of America.
 
Warner Bros. Digital Networks’ short-from content brand Stage 13 added two members to its senior creative team: Christopher Mack, previously Senior Vice President of Warner Bros. Television Workshop, was hired as Senior Vice President of Scripted Content, and Shari Scorca, who has led Stage 13’s unscripted content development and production since 2016, was named Vice President of Unscripted Content.
 
Cheryle Harrison, Executive Vice President, Ad Sales and Digital Operations for Katz Networks, has added the responsibilities of General Manager of Bounce.  
 
Mercury promoted Bernadette Abasta from Senior Vice President of Media to Executive Vice President. Dan McGillick was hired as Senior Vice President, TV Buying. He was previously Vice President at Horizon Next.
