CNN is launching streaming service CNN+ in the first quarter of 2022, offering original, on-demand and interactive programming. The service will have 8-12 hours of live, daily programming at launch. “On top of a television offering that has never been stronger, which remains at the core of what we do today, we will offer consumers a streaming product that grows the reach and scope of the CNN brand in a way that no one else is doing,” said Jeff Zucker, Chairman of WarnerMedia News and Sports and President of CNN Worldwide. “Nothing like this exists.”
With Tokyo under a state of emergency due to the pandemic and mixed sentiment there about the Olympic Games, Toyota is hitting the brakes on Olympics-themed ads on Japanese television. “There are many issues with these Games that are proving difficult to be understood,” said Toyota Chief Communications Officer Jun Nagata on Monday. In the US, however, Toyota is not adjusting any marketing plans for the Olympics. “Nothing has been cancelled or altered. Toyota is all systems go,” said an NBCU spokesperson, adding that no advertiser has asked to cancel their Olympics plans.
Speaking of the Games, Lucid collected data focused on global viewer interest and found:
* 81% of respondents plan on watching the Summer Olympics this year.
* 58% of respondents plan to watch the Olympics through their cable/TV provider rather than a streaming service.
* 76% of respondents prefer to watch the Olympics live rather than watch the highlights.
* 45% of respondents plan to watch the Summer Olympics even if their favorite athlete is not competing.
Dish has agreed to pay AT&T $5 billion over 10 years to make AT&T its wireless network provider, replacing T-Mobile as its primary partner. “Teaming with AT&T on this long-term partnership will allow us to better compete in the retail wireless market and quickly respond to changes in our customers’ evolving connectivity needs as we build our own first-of-its kind 5G network,” said John Swieringa, Dish COO and Group President of Retail Wireless.
Nexstar Media cable network NewsNation is adding 26 hours of programming to its weekly slate. Joining the lineup on Monday, September 27 are “Dan Abrams Live” at 8p, and three-hour weekday show “Morning in America,” hosted by former ABC News correspondent Adrienne Bankert, at 7a.

Amazon Studios handed a greenlight to “Tampa Baes,” an 8-episode docuseries from 3 Ball Productions that follows a young group of lesbian friends in Tampa Bay, Florida. The series will premiere this fall exclusively on Prime Video in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, and New Zealand with a worldwide release to follow.
Sterling “Steelo” Brim inked a first-look deal with Paramount+ and MTV. The “Ridiculousness” star will develop, executive produce and appear on camera for shows produced by MTV Entertainment Studios.

Syndicated daytime talker “Nick Cannon” is set to premiere Monday, September 27, across the country and on Fox Television Stations in the largest US markets. The show had been scheduled to debut last fall, but was delayed due to the pandemic, as well as anti-Semitic comments from Cannon’s YouTube podcast that prompted ViacomCBS to cancel his MTV series, “Wild N’ Out.” Cannon has since apologized and met with religious leaders; “Wild N’ Out” returned in February.
Netflix series “Brand New Cherry Flavor,” following a filmmaker whose dream project turns into a nightmare, premieres Friday, August 13. The show is adapted from the 1996 cult classic novel.

President Biden clarified a comment he made to reporters on Friday, that Facebook is “killing people” with misinformation that keeps people from getting COVID-19 vaccinations. What Biden said he was referring to was a report that said 60% of the vaccine misinformation on Facebook came from 12 people. “These 12 people are out there giving misinformation. Anyone listening to it is getting hurt by it. It’s killing people. It’s bad information,” said Biden on Monday. “My hope is that Facebook, instead of taking it personally that somehow I am saying that Facebook is killing people, that they would do something about the misinformation.”
Tencent is picking up another gaming company, with an agreement to buy Sumo Digital (“Crackdown 3”) for $1.27 billion. “The opportunity to work with Tencent is one we couldn’t miss,” said Sumo CEO Carl Cavers. “It would bring another dimension to Sumo, presenting opportunities to truly stamp our mark on this amazing industry.” Tencent already owns a 8.75% stake in Sumo.

WWE is turning to TikTok to search for its next ring announcer. Users can upload their most entertaining videos using the hashtag #WWEAnnouncerContest. Drive announced the pre-sales of true crime documentary programs from FirstLook TV. True Crime Network (US) and Sky Crime and streaming service NOW (UK and Ireland) have acquired the second season of “Made for Murder”; True Crime Network also acquired season three of “A Killer’s Mistake.”
Fred Media announced it has formed a new representation partnership with New Zealand content business Stripe Studios. As part of the deal, Fred Media will distribute the upcoming series “Great Southern Truckers,” being produced by Stripe Studios for Discovery Australia and New Zealand, as well as two seasons of “The Circus.” The second season of “The Circus” is currently in production for NBCU NZ (Bravo TV).
Beyond Rights format “Love It or List It” has new versions underway in Finland and France. In Finland, Beyond Rights has licensed the format to Rabbit Films, with the production company currently working on an initial 10-episode run for Nelonen. In France, M6 has licensed the format and is currently in pre-production.
