IN THE NEWS

Nominations for the 75th Annual Primetime Emmys were announced on Wednesday, and HBO’s “Succession” led the pack with 27 nods, including Outstanding Drama and a record-breaking three best drama actor nominations (Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin). “Succession” will compete against company sibs “House of the Dragon,” “The Last of Us” and “The White Lotus,” along with Disney+’s “Andor,” AMC’s “Better Call Saul,” Netflix’s “The Crown,” and Showtime’s “Yellowjackets.” Competing for Outstanding Comedy are ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” HBO’s “Barry,” FX’s “The Bear,” Amazon Freevee’s “Jury Duty,” Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” and Netflix’s “Wednesday.”

Eighty-seven percent of streaming viewers report they see too many of the same ads, according to new research by MAGNA’s Media Trials unit in partnership with Nexxen. The study, It’s All in the Delivery: How Repeating Ads Affect CTV Viewers, Brands & Platforms, found that while participants who saw the same ad six times peaked in awareness at 92% recall, negative associations spiked, too. Viewers who saw the same ad six times said the ad was “annoying” by 48% over average, and “disruptive to their overall experience” by 33%. Overexposure also eroded purchase intent, with a 16% decline among those who viewed an ad six times. “Running a spot repeatedly during the same show might improve recall but at what cost? Study participants were clear on how frustrating it was to see the same ad again and again and this cast a shadow over the brand and the streaming network,” said Kara Manatt, EVP, Intelligence Solutions, MAGNA.

Chicken Soup for the Soul companies Redbox and ad platform Crackle Connex are teaming with TikTok, which will provide content to be featured on video screens on top of Redbox kiosks, “This partnership allows us to bring together the power of our exceptional content with the high-visibility of Redbox kiosk locations, creating an effective and fresh approach to advertising,” said Dan Page, Head of Global Distribution, New Screens at TikTok.

IAB has released its Retail Media Buyers Guide, to educate brands, agencies, and retailers on best practices amid the surge in retail media. The guide aims to help buyers understand the complexity and ease buying of retail media and develop definitions to ensure consistency across retailers. “Retail media is considered the third wave of digital advertising because it combines the targeting and measurement capabilities of digital advertising with the scale and reach of traditional advertising,” notes the report. “The first wave of digital advertising was search advertising, which involved placing ads on search engines like Google. The second wave was social advertising, which involved placing ads on social media platforms like Facebook. The opportunity for retail media is vast and encompasses various areas, including onsite, offsite display, social commerce, CTV, and in-store digital advertising.”

“We’re Here” isn’t going anywhere – but its original hosts are. HBO renewed the reality show for a fourth season, with “RuPaul’s Drag Race” alums Jaida Essence Hall, Priyanka and Sasha Velour onboard replacing Bob the Drag Queen, Eureka O’Hara and Shangela Laquifa Wadley. “We are extremely grateful for the opportunity we had the past three seasons to travel across the country, share our experiences and connect with all of the courageous individuals who entrusted us with their stories,” said the departing hosts in a joint statement.

Bravo renewed “Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard” for a second season. The spin-off reality series premiered May 7.

Roku’s FAST service is now available on Google TV and other Android TV OS devices, downloadable through the Google Play Store. Previously, The Roku Channel could only be accessed on Roku devices, Fire TV, Samsung TVs, the Roku mobile app and online.

BBC News anchor Huw Edwards has been identified as the “well-known presenter” who was taken off the air as the BBC investigated allegations that he had paid a teenager for explicit photos. Edwards’ wife issued a statement saying he is suffering from “serious mental health issues” that have “greatly worsened” since the story broke. Two days after UK tabloid The Sun published the allegations, a lawyer for the teen said nothing inappropriate or illegal had taken place.

Fox News is being sued for defamation by Ray Epps, who claims then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson identified him as an undercover FBI agent responsible for the January 6, 2020 attack on the Capitol. Epps, a Trump supporter who believed the presidential election was stolen, was at the Capitol on January 6, but tried to deescalate the violence, according to the lawsuit.

TECH TALK

Roku has partnered with Shopify to provide viewers the ability to purchase products from Shopify merchants directly from their TV through Roku Action Ads. “Bringing a Shopify purchase experience to television for merchants is an industry first,” said Peter Hamilton, Senior Director of Ad Innovation at Roku. “Roku democratizes access to TV advertising, and now, we’re collapsing the funnel for Shopify’s merchants. This is a great example of Roku’s unique platform position to make advertisers unmissable across the streamer’s journey, from power on to purchase complete.”

SPORTS ROUNDUP

The PGA Tour had no choice but to reach a merger deal with the Saudi-funded LIV Tour, said PGA officials during a Senate hearing on Tuesday. Responding to Connecticut Democrat’s Richard Blumenthal’s comment that the hearing “is about much more than the game of golf. It’s about how a brutal, repressive regime can buy influence, and indeed even take over a cherished American institution to cleanse its public image,” PGA Tour board member Jimmy Dunne said, “I really understand Sen. Blumenthal’s concern about having them take over….I’m concerned with what the senator is worried about. But I’m concerned if we do nothing we’re going to end up there, they’re going to end up owning golf. They can do it.” Republican Ron Johnson of Wisconsin defended the PGA Tour, saying, “It would be grossly unfair to expect the PGA Tour to bear the full burden of holding Saudi Arabia accountable. After all, anyone who drives a car or uses oil-based products has helped fill the coffers of the Saudi Public Investment fund.”

In more LIV Golf news, the league announced that Simplebet will serve its Official Sports Betting Innovation Partner. The multi-year collaboration will see the company distribute the league’s real-time competition data to betting operators and media platforms globally.
