Auto companies hit the brakes on national TV ad spending in June, according to iSpot.tv. Automakers spent $128.7 million for the month, down from $157.2 million last year. Biggest spenders were Lexus ($12.8 million), Kia ($12.7 million), Chevrolet ($11.7 million), Toyota ($10.6 million) and Nissan ($8.9 million).

Netflix scored the most nominees among streamers for the 2023 HCA TV Awards, with 56. HBO topped cable with 53 nods. Series with the most nominations include Showtime’s “Yellowjackets” and Prime Video’s “The Boys” with 14 each; ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” with 13; Starz reboot “Party Down” with 12; and Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” with 11.

Kristen Kish, season 10 winner of Bravo’s “Top Chef,” will return to the show as host for Wisconsin-set season 21. “Kristen Kish represents everything that makes ‘Top Chef’ incredibly special,” said Ryan Flynn, SVP, Current Production, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “She’s an acclaimed chef and her experience as a cheftestant, winner and judge, alongside her culinary curiosity, makes Kristen the perfect host for the next chapter of ‘Top Chef’ as we take on a new region of the country we haven’t explored.” Kish replaces Padma Lakshmi, who served as host of the culinary competition for the last 19 seasons.

TBD, Sinclair’s free over-the-air multicast network, will be anchored by three comedy series for the 2023-24 broadcast season. Beginning this October, “Key & Peele,” “Punk’d” and “Whose Line is it Anyway?” will be added to TBD’s primetime and late-night schedules.

Meteorologist Bob Van Dillen (“Morning Express with Robin Meade”) has joined Fox Weather as on-air host. Van Dillen is based at Fox Weather headquarters in NYC.

Pluto TV and Cineflix Rights announced the launch of Cineflix’s first single-brand FAST channel in Canada, featuring reality TV show “American Pickers.” Pluto TV in Canada now offers over 200 episodes of the treasure hunting series.

Prime Video is adding France Channel to the service. The French culture streamer offers original series, films and documentaries.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Fox announced its fall schedule, kicking off Tuesday, September 19 at 8p with “Celebrity Name That Tune,” hosted by Jane Krakowski (“30 Rock”) and band leader Randy Jackson, followed by “I Can See Your Voice” at 9p. Other highlights include the series debut of game show “Snake Oil,” hosted by David Spade (“Just Shoot Me”) on Wednesday, September 27 at 9p, after “The Masked Singer.” “Krapololis” makes its time period premiere on Sunday, October 1 at 8:30p, bookended by the season premieres of “The Simpsons” at 8p, and “Bob’s Burgers” and “Family Guy” at 9p and 9:30p.

Sarah Hyland (“Modern Family”) returns as host and comedian Iain Stirling is back as narrator for season five of Peacock’s “Love Island USA,” launching Tuesday, July 18. “Vanderpump Rules” star Ariana Madix continues her post-Scandoval walk of fame with a guest appearance during the reality show’s second week.

Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington are the focus of Apple TV+ docuseries “The Super Models,” premiering Wednesday, September 20.

AppleTV+ drama “The Changeling,” starring and exec produced by LaKeith Stanfield, launches Friday, September 8. Based on the bestseller by Victor LaValle, the series is an adult fairy tale/horror story set in NYC.

“Outdoor Eats,” an adventure culinary show starring Chef Corso, premieres Thursday, July 20 on Bally Sports. The full season starts airing on Outside TV beginning July 31.

Ashley Judd will narrate season two of Lifetime’s true crime series “#TextMeWhenYouGetHome,” following the stories of women abducted, harmed or murdered. The season premieres Monday, August 7 at 8p.

Fox Nation docuseries “The Fall of the House of Murdaugh” debuts Tuesday, September 12. The three-parter features exclusive access to the family, friends and defense team of Alex Murdaugh, the once prominent South Carolina attorney who was convicted earlier this year of murdering his wife and son. Martha MacCallum sits down with Buster Murdagh for his first interview since his father was convicted.

“Secretos de las Indomables” premieres on Canela.TV on Thursday, August 17. The spin-off of reality series “Secretos de Villanas” features six Latina personalities known for their indomitable spirit.

The New York Jets released the first episode of season three of their EmpowHer: Keep Rising. Narrated by ESPN NFL reporter Kimberly Martin, the two-parter chronicles the Jets 2023 High School Girls Flag Football League presented by Audi.

A federal judge has ruled the Federal Trade Commission failed to prove Microsoft’s $70 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard would result in a substantial reduction in competition and harm consumers. Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley of the US District Court for the Northern District of California denied the FTC’s request for a preliminary injunction. “We’re grateful to the Court in San Francisco for this quick and thorough decision,” tweeted Brad Smith, President of Microsoft.

Anzu, the in-game advertising solution, and Integral Ad Science announced the launch of the industry’s first solution that measures viewability and invalid traffic across 2D and 3D gaming environments and tracks them within the IAS Signal platform. “When founding Anzu, we knew that for in-game to succeed, advertisers would need a robust and transparent way to measure their success and be able to compare it to other mediums, which is why this area has been a core focus for us as a business from day one,” said Ben Fenster, Co-Founder and CPO, at Anzu. “It’s been great to work together with IAS on this first-to-market solution.”

Basis Technologies, provider of cloud-based workflow automation and business intelligence software for marketing and advertising, announced an integration with Vistar Media, the marketplace for programmatic digital out-of-home. The Basis platform now provides marketers with DOOH programmatic buying capabilities through access to Vistar Media’s supply-side platform.

OpenVault announced the strategic acquisition of Nimble This and the naming of Nimble This founder Brady Volpe as Chief Product Officer. The moves harness OpenVault’s Profile Management Application (PMA) and Nimble This’ proactive network maintenance solutions to improve operator profit margins, network capacity, and subscriber quality of experience.

TransUnion has expanded its TruAudience® Data Marketplace partnership with Magnite to enable agencies, brands, and publishers to reach audiences across digital media channels including streaming video, audio, gaming, and DOOH in addition to CTV.

COMING UP

Hallmark Channel is taking to the high seas for the holidays. A cruise in partnership with Sixthman will feature Hallmark stars and yuletide experiences. The ship sets sail November 5-9, 2024 from Miami, FL to Nassau, Bahamas.

NewsNation’s “Cuomo” will air a live interview with Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie on Thursday, July 13 at 8p. Chris Cuomo will quiz Christie on the status of his campaign, the current Republican presidential field, and why the former NJ governor is jumping into the 2024 race.

Christie will not be among the Republican presidential candidates featured the next day during Blaze Media’s coverage of the 2023 Family Leadership Summit (on hand will be Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy), hosted by fired Fox News host Tucker Carlson. After the event, Carlson will speak to another FNC alum, Glenn Beck, for BlazeTV.

TCM will celebrate a different star every day during the month of August, for its Summer Under the Stars stunt. Among those spotlighted will be Woody Strode, Errol Flynn, Debbie Reynolds and Sophia Loren.

IMG producing the BBC’s coverage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, taking place in Australia and New Zealand starting July 20. Under the agreement, IMG will manage the incoming live match feed, studio presentation and highlight programming for the BBC’s 33 fixtures throughout the tournament, including the final and semi-final stages. IMG will also have a dedicated production team embedded in the England Lionesses’ camp to create exclusive content for the BBC’s digital and news channels.

Greenfly, focused on short-form content orchestration, has acquired Miro AI, an AI-powered content as a service platform that uses artificial intelligence to analyze sports content. Greenfly works with sports leagues, teams and federations, including MLB, PGA Tour, Bundesliga, ESPN, Real Madrid, and the NHL, to power digital media asset collection, organization and access.

Eight-time national champion Tennessee, 2023 NCAA Tournament No. 1 seed Indiana and six other conference programs will head to Southwest Florida this November to take part in the Elevance Health Women’s Fort Myers Tip-Off, which is scheduled for November 23-25 at Suncoast Credit Union Arena on the campus of Florida SouthWestern State College.

Sportsradar has expanded of its longstanding partnership with Caesars Sportsbook, establishing Sportradar as an official supplier of sports betting data from the NBA, MLB and NHL. “As in-play betting increases in prominence in the US, the fast, accurate and reliable data that Sportradar curates will play a critical role in contributing to Caesars’ efforts to maximize revenue opportunities,” said Ed Blonk, Chief Commercial Officer, Sportradar.

TYR and Operation Underground Railroad have partnered to launch a limited-edition O.U.R. CXT-1 Trainer. Through this collaboration, 100% of the profits from the product will be donated to the organization’s mission of fighting global human trafficking and child exploitation.

Canadian production company Neshama Entertainment is establishing an in-house distribution operation, Neshama Releasing, to oversee the Canadian sales of Neshama-produced content, FOX Entertainment-produced content, and third-party product. The unit will be headed by Brook Peters, who will serve as EVP, Sales & Business Development, Neshama Releasing.

ViX has struck an agreement with RCN to drive expansion and broaden the service’s presence in Colombia, through exclusive content on the platform, original local production and promotional support on the network.

ITV Studios’ format “The Perfect Picture,” which originated in the Netherlands as “Het Perfecte Plaatje,” will debut in France and Belgium. Produced by ITV Studios France for M6 to air in the fall and DOK1Media for Play4 (SBS) to premiere next year, the format focuses on photography.

Hulu Japan and Disney+ have launched a new bundle for consumers in Japan. “By joining forces with Hulu Japan, we will bring high quality global and local entertainment to audiences, offering more consumer choice at an attractive value,” said Carol Choi, Managing Director, Disney Japan. “We are confident that this bundle plan will appeal to an even broader audience in Japan.”
