07/09/19: Millions tuned in to see the US win the Women’s World Cup


Good morning. It’s Tuesday July 9, 2019 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

USA’s 2-0 win over Netherlands on Sunday in the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 final reeled in 14,271,000 viewers, peaking at nearly 20 million, across FOX and streaming services, according to the company, to rank as the most-watched soccer match on English-language television in the U.S. since the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup final and topping numbers for the men’s tournament a year ago. The event scored nearly 14 million viewers on FOX alone, and peaked at 19,595,000 to best the men’s 2018 FIFA World Cup final by 22%, but was off-pace from the 2015 final, which was played in primetime. Overall, household ratings for the complete FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019™ posted a 2% uptick over full tournament ratings for 2015. Across streaming platforms, Sunday’s match delivered an average minute audience of 289,000 viewers, making it the most-streamed FIFA Women’s World Cup final in history, up 402% over the same match in 2015.

FOX also saw a record day for FOX Sports social media, which measured 17.8 million views across platforms for the FIFA Women’s World Cup final, out-pacing the 2018 men’s final by 18% with both Twitter and YouTube setting new daily records for the tournament.
FOX also averaged 6.9 million OOH viewers, according to Tunity Analytics to also outperform the 2018 men’s final, which averaged 4.98 million OOH viewers and had 92% of all OOH viewing during the time period.

Telemundo Deportes’ saw the USA/Netherlands FIFA World Cup Final on Sunday morning score a Total Audience Delivery average of 1.6 million viewers and rank as the most-watched FIFA Women’s World Cup match in Spanish-language history, and did top (by 22%) the 2015 USA/Japan final. Locally, the FIFA Women’s World Cup final match was the top Spanish-language TV in all 15 Telemundo-owned station LPM markets among adults 18-49. In addition, Telemundo Deportes set the Spanish-language record for the most-watched FIFA Women’s World Cup ever, with a Total Audience Delivery average of 301,000 viewers – posting a 27% increase over the full 2015 tournament. Meanwhile, the Copa America Brazil vs. Peru final averaged a Total Audience Delivery of 3.1 million viewers, ranking as the most-watched Copa America final since 2007.
Univision’s coverage of the Gold Cup final averaged 5.9 million Total Viewers for the network, becoming the most-watch men’s soccer match of 2019 on any network, Overall, Univision’s telecast of the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup averaged 1.3 million Total Viewers 2+ and 673,000 Adults 18-49 through 31 matches across Univision, UniMas and Univision Deportes Network.
Major League Soccer and Liga MX announced that ESPN will serve as the the U.S. English-language home for the Leagues Cup, a new international club competition pitting four Major League Soccer teams against four teams from Mexico’s Liga MX. The seven-match tournament will begin with quarterfinals July 23-24 and conclude with the Final on Sept. 18. ESPN+ will exclusively stream three quarterfinal matches and ESPN will televise one match in the quarterfinal round. ESPN2 will televise the two semifinal matches and the Final
ESPN also announced the lineup of presenters for tomorrow’s telecast of the 2019 ESPYS, which starts at 8p. This year’s scheduled presenters include: Dave Bautista (Stuber), Linda Cardellini (Dead to Me), Eric Dane (Euphoria), Eugenio Derbez (Dora And The Lost City Of Gold), Elle Fanning (Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil), Christina Hendricks (Good Girls), Billie Jean King (Former Tennis Player), Chris Long (Former NFL Player), Joel McHale (Card Sharks), Kumail Nanjiani (Stuber), Lilly Singh (A Little Late With Lilly Singh), Usher and more.
The LPGA is once again turning to Florida for a new event, announcing that the Pelican Women’s Championship will be played May 14-17 in Belleair in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area next year. The 72-hole event at Pelican Golf Club will sport a $1.75 million purse and a field of 144 players. DEX Imaging will serve as the presenting sponsor.

Univision Communications is set to relaunch its multi-platform sports media brand and leading cable sports network as TUDN on July 20. According to the company, the TUDN brand identity will serve as “Your Sports Network” with the tagline, “Vivimos TUPasión,” which translates to “We Live Your Passion.” Univision Deportes Network will become the 24-hour television home of TUDN in the U.S. and also will also extend to sports telecasts on other Univision networks, including Univision Network, UniMás and Galavision. “Upon its debut, TUDN will be the largest Spanish-language sports media brand in the world,” said Juan Carlos Rodriguez, President of Sports for Univision and Televisa. “With a bold new content slate built around live programming and the best team of experts in the industry, this new powerhouse identity will resonate with futbol fanaticos throughout North America and raise the bar for coverage of the world’s most beloved sport.”
Twitter reports that Nike was the most-discussed brand on Twitter during the FIFA Women’s World Cup globally. Budweiser and Visa rounded out the top three to join the conversation.
The 2019 Citi Open this month will see fans offered a new fan experience showcasing D.C.’s “most innovative” culinary fare in the new hospitality settings. Levy will be the exclusive food and beverage partner for the long-running tennis tournament. Levy will rebrand concessions and VIP hospitality fare throughout the tournament grounds with customized menus from Chef Jose Andres and favored local D.C. eateries.
Porsche Cars North America has been named the Exclusive Automotive Partner of the Western & Southern Open. The sports car manufacturer is the exclusive partner in the automotive category of the tournament with the deal including official sponsorship of the exclusive Draw Party, branding of the on-court serve speed signage, and the provision of courtesy vehicles for players. In addition, Porsche will have on-site vehicle displays, Porsche racing simulators for patrons to experience during the tournament, and branding on all digital and printed tournament draws.
Minor League Baseball today announced its list of Top 25 teams in licensed merchandise sales for 2018, with the combined totals of all 160 teams setting a Minor League Baseball record with more than $73.8 million in retail sales. The $73.8 million total marks a 4.2% percent increase over 2017’s record total. PGA of America, European Tour and NBC Sports Group are teaming up for a new, global Ryder Cup digital-media relationship that will see NBC Sports develop a multi-platform Ryder Cup presence, including a comprehensive website that serves fans of both the U.S. and European teams and a new app that will enhance both the onsite and overall viewing experience. The long-term relationship begins in advance of the 43rd Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin (Sept 25-27, 2020). The PGA of America and the European Tour will lead the sales process through their Global Partner Program, and NBC Sports will develop and execute customized digital activations for partners. Digital content for these Ryder Cup platforms will be provided by all three organizations, as well as NBC Sports’ colleagues at Sky Sports.
Monumental Sports Network announced that it is partnering with Sportradar to drive the network’s latest digital platform enhancement. The final deal will include live scoring updates as well as real-time betting odds tracking as Monumental will integrate real-time data feeds provided by Sportradar that will include the following league-wide data packages: NHL, NBA, WNBA, NBA G League and AFL. A feed will also be procured to deliver real-time betting lines. Additionally, Sportradar will provide a functionality in the network’s platform that has the ability to hide betting-related content and materials in the event a user chooses to opt-out of gaming content.

Major League Baseball is reportedly launching an esports tournament in China for the league’s game MLB The Show, according to Sohu.com. MLB will invite eight top Chinese esports teams to form the new league, which is slated to launch later this year.
Lagardere Sports is being tapped to serve as the exclusive agent to market commercial rights for the PlayerUnknown’s BattleGrounds’ 2019 PUBG Nations Cup as well as the 2019 PUBG Global Championship. Lagardere Sports will look to market the commercial rights for the events and develop new business opportunities

The National Lacrosse League Board of Governors announced a contract extension for Commissioner Nick Sakiewicz. Sakiewicz took over the role in 2016 with the contract now running through the 2022 season. “Over the past three years Commissioner Sakiewicz’s leadership of the NLL enterprise and his strategic vision for professional lacrosse has produced unprecedented fan engagement, franchise growth and exceptional commercial results for our League and the game of lacrosse.
