Univision is ending its association with the Miss Universe Organization, which is part-owned by Donald Trump, in the wake of Trump’s remarks about Mexican immigrants. “They’re bringing drugs. They are bringing crime. They’re rapists,” Trump said June 16 as he launched his Republican presidential campaign. “At Univision, we see first-hand the work ethic, love for family, strong religious valuesand the important role Mexican immigrants and Mexican-Americans have had and will continue to have in building the future of our country,” said the company. “We will not be airing the Miss USA pageanton July 12th or working on any other projects tied to the Trump Organization.” Spanish-language coverage of the Miss USA pageant had been slated to air on UniMas.
Via Twitter, Trump responded by saying, among other things, “Univision wants to back out of signed @MissUniverse contract because I exposed the terrible trade deals that the U.S. makes with Mexico.” Trump’s special counsel, Michael Cohen, warned, “We intend to pursue all legal rights and remedies available to Mr. Trump pursuant to the terms of the license agreement as well as a defamation case against Univision.”
Roger Ailes signed a multi-year contract extension keeping him chairman-CEO of Fox News and Fox Business Network and chairman of Fox Television Stations, as Rupert Murdoch prepares to step down as CEO of 21st Century Fox on July 1. Ailes will report to the elder Murdoch as well as new CEO James Murdoch and executive co-chairman Lachlan Murdoch. “Roger and I have always had, and will continue to have, a special relationship,” said Rupert. “Lachlan, James and I are delighted that Roger will be leading key businesses for us and our shareholders for years to come, and he has our unwavering support.”
Fox News’ Bob Beckel on the other hand, is out – and it doesn’t sound like an amicable parting of the ways. The co-host on hit talk show The Five had been off the air since February, dealing with back surgery and treatment for prescription medicine addiction. “We tried to work with Bob for months, but we couldn’t hold The Five hostage to one man’s personal issues,” said Fox News EVP programming Bill Shine. “He took tremendous advantage of our generosity, empathy and goodwill, and we simply came to the end of the road with him.” Juan Williams and Geraldo Rivera will be among rotating hosts for now.
PBS pulled the Ben Affleck episode of Finding Your Roots from distribution, delayed scheduling season three and put off a decision about season four of as it implements standards “to ensure that the problems that arose in episode #204 will be avoided in the future.” The action comes after an investigation into Affleck’s request, granted by producers, to edit out mention that he is the descendent of slave owners. “PBS and WNET have determined that the series co-producers violated PBS standards by failing to shield the creative and editorial process from improper influence, and by failing to inform PBS or WNET of Mr. Affleck’s efforts to affect program content,” said PBS.
Fox’s fall season is kicking off Sunday, September 20 with the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards, leading into the season premiere the following night of Gotham at 8p and series launch of Minority Report at 9p. Other new series debuts include Scream Queens, with a two-hour opener Tuesday, September 22; Rosewood on Wednesday, September 23 at 8p, and Grandfathered and The Grinder on Tuesday, September 29 at 8p and 8:30p.
Exclusive: NYTVF is partnering with Starz for the inaugural “Starz Rising Talent Award,” identifying an outstanding producer or production team. Narrative projects are eligible for consideration and must be named Official Selections in the NYTVF’s annual Independent Pilot Competition, which is accepting entries through June 29 (so hurry!). Winner gets to meet with Starz development and programming execs, the first time a premium cable net has offered a guaranteed opportunity to an NYTVF artist. For more info, click here.
NBC ordered a season two of Aquarius, noting the strength of its digital numbers. While the series is drawing an okay 1.2 rating among A18-49 and 5.8 million viewers, “it’s driven some record numbers for NBC Digital and helped us reach viewers who might otherwise have overlooked a great summer drama,” said entertainment president Jennifer Salke. With its entire season available online right after the linear premiere, Aquarius has become the most-viewed drama on NBC.com and the NBC app after The Blacklist.
With an eye toward owning more of the scripted content on its networks, AMC Networks has expanded the scope of AMC Studios to oversee production, operations and business affairs across AMC and SundanceTV. Current AMC head of business affairs Rick Olshansky and AMC Networks SVP of finance and studio operations Stefan Reinhardt will become co-heads of the in-house studio, reporting to Charlie Collier, president of AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios. “Expanding the scope and solidifying the leadership of AMC Studios is an important step in the continued evolution of AMC Networks, as content ownership and global expansion have become significant drivers of our industry and meaningful contributors to the success and growth of our company,” said COO Ed Carroll.
Multicultural viewers spend a greater percentage of time than whites with OTT video, according to a new study. Horowitz Research reports that 51 percent of Hispanic TV viewers, 46 percent of Asian viewers and 45 percent of black viewers spend over a fifth of their total viewing time watching OTT, versus 39 percent of whites.
Howard Stern said on his radio show that this season of NBC’s America’s Got Talent, his fourth, will also be his last and suggested Simon Cowell as his replacement on the judging panel. The shock jock’s reason for leaving? “I’m just too ***ing busy,” Stern told his listeners.
Who do you think should take Howard Stern’s place on AGT? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll.
“This is an exciting time for us as the creative community is listening and the tide is turning,” Charlie Ebersol, president and CEO of The Company and founder of 6 Certified, which recognizes accurate portrayals of the military, tells Cynopsis. “A normalized depiction of veterans is becoming the norm in film and television, and this first wave of 6 Certified projects reflects that trend.” Shows that got the salute this round included Dancing With the Stars, Hawaii Five-0, Modern Family and Night Shift.
