360-Degree Video: 360-degree video, also called immersive videos, are panoramic videos shot using an omnidirectional camera or a collection of cameras. Viewers can manually explore the video in 360 degrees, usually by clicking and dragging. A virtual reality headset is necessary – though many 360-degree videos are also accessible in full VR.
BitTorrent, the peer-to-peer computer program used for uploading and downloading files, has launched BitTorrent Now, a music and video streaming app for iOS, Apple TV, and Android. Pilot partners include distributors and studios such as A24, Oscilloscope, and Honora.
AOL has acquired NYC-based Nito Inc., an animation and social media technology company powered by markerless face tracking technology that’s applied to 3D animation. The goal? To integrate facial tracking with 2D and 3D content into AOL’s core Kanvas apps. The company will launch a utility app called Switch, which will enable users to alter the appearance of their selfies using a variety of content, including 3D avatars, 3D content, makeup, and masks. Switch is available for download on iOS, following its launch at VidCon yesterday.
According to a report in The Hill, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg announced that the social media giant will be requiring political bias training for its employees. Facebook is still sweeping up the mess created by a May Gizmodo story suggesting anti-conservative political favoritism in the company’s Trending Topics curation.
Speaking of Facebook, the company is rolling out some new Facebook Live features. The first, arriving in the next few weeks, will let users add different masks and effects to live broadcasts (think of it as a sort of Snapchat lens feature for live video). A second, launching later this summer, will allow people to hold live broadcasts – duets, interviews, etc. – with others. Also later this summer, FL will enable users to schedule live videos, giving viewers the chance to receive notifications letting them know when a broadcast is starting.

Social-media star Cameron Dallas is making the move from Vine to Netflix. The streaming titan has enlisted Dallas for an unscripted series that will shadow him and his entourage as he takes on Hollywood. Neither a release date nor title has been set. But if Dallas’ 9.4 million Vine followers and roughly 35 million social media followers tag along, Netflix will have something to smile about.
Content service provider Xumo has launched a free mobile app. The app allows users to stream content from an assortment of digital channels, including FailArmy, WSJ, Conde Nast, Popsugar, and Mashable. Xumo is also adding five comedy channels including Funny Or Die, Cracked, and Just for Laughs. That makes more than 90 channels available to Xumo’s 20 million+ viewers.
Apple has patented a stylus that allows its users to manipulate the screen by the mere placement of their fingers on the stylus shaft. The Stylus With Touch Sensor includes a bouquet of advanced device interactive abilities, from rotating an onscreen object to controlling system user interface parameters, such as zoom levels. It’s targeted toward those who want to achieve pixel-precision on a touchscreen.
Google Fiber has signed a deal to acquire Webpass, an ISP that uses Ethernet and point-to-point wireless technologies to deliver high-speed Internet service to residential and business customers. Webpass service is delivered as Ethernet, but supports wireless via routers and a Webpass jack.
It’s no secret that millennials and Hispanics are key political demographics. Tremor Video partnered with research and advertising firm Cygnal to conduct a national voter research study that found that both groups are greatly influenced by online political content and video during this tumultuous election season. For instance:
– Millennials and Hispanics are two times as likely to be motivated by online video to register to vote, with Hispanics being 25% more likely to be influenced by video specifically, when it comes to deciding who to vote for.
– Reaching and impacting Hispanics requires political advertisers to employ a multichannel approach (they’re 22% more likely to use tablets and 90% more likely to use connected TV).
– Both millennials and Hispanics are more than 40% likely to click on a video ad. In fact, 4 in 10 millennials would want the ability to watch more related content when viewing a political video ad, and more than half of Hispanics feel the same.
Fox Digital Entertainment and game developer Zynga have struck a licensing deal to produce Ice Age: Arctic Blast, a match-3 game based on Ice Age: Collision Course, which hits theaters July 22. The game is available for download for free on the App Store and in Google Play. In addition, Fox inked a pact with Regal Entertainment to make it possible to purchase tickets through the game.
Adele and her label, Sony Music, are finally ready to start streaming. Her blockbuster album 25 will start appearing on Spotify at midnight tonight, market by market.
Upfront Ventures has a new General Partner on the team: Kobie Fuller, a former principal with Accel Partners. Fuller was previously CMO at a Los Angeles-based fashion-ecommerce company called Revolve and, earlier in his career, spent time as an associate with Insight Venture Partners. According to Upfront’s Managing Partner, Mark Suster, Fuller-led investments at Accel included software start-ups UserTesting and EmergentVR, and he also invested in Oculus VR before Facebook scooped it up for $2 billion. Upfront Ventures specializes in investing in early stage technology companies.
