IN THE NEWS

Get out your smelling salts and check your entailments: a Downton Abbey movie is in the works, according to NBCUniversal International Studios president Michael Edelstein. “We are working on getting the script right and then we’ve got to figure out how to get the [cast] together. Because as you know, people go on and do other things. But we’re hopeful to make a movie sometime next year,” the exec said while in Singapore for Downton Abbey: The Exhibition. The original series aired in the US as part of PBS Masterpiece from 2010-15.

Entertainment One has signed an overall first-look, multi-year deal with StoryBy Entertainment. According to the arrangement, eOne will serve as the studio on StoryBy’s TV projects and control worldwide rights. StoryBy is designed to create film and TV projects based on premium source material, and has series including USA’s Queen of the South, Freeform’s Stitchers and the upcoming Scott Free-produced The Terror for AMC, based on Dan Simmons’ novel.

A big cast shift at NBC‘s Taken, where six cast members are exiting as the show retools for its second season. Gaius Charles, Brooklyn Sudano, Monique Gabriela Curnen, Michael Irby, Jose Pablo Cantillo, and James Landry Hébertwill are all out, and Greg Plageman will be taking over as showrunner for the series, after Alexander Cary departed in May.

The Leftovers co-creator Damon Lindelof appears to be bouncing from that shuttered series to take on an under-development Watchmen series at HBO. Though Zack Snyder, director of the 2009 Watchmen film, had been shopping around such a series in 2015, he is reportedly no longer attached to the project. The series would be based on the Alan Moore graphic novel of the same name, published between 1986-87.

Travel Channel has greenlit an 18-ep half-hour series for Andrew Zimmern (Bizarre Foods), The Zimmern List. Production begins in late June in Portland, ME and Boston. “Andrew is the ultimate resource and ‘friend-in the-know’ for where to eat in great cities across the country,” said Courtney White, senior vice president, programming, Travel Channel, Food Network and Cooking Channel.

Production is underway for Jason Alexander‘s new original comedy series Hit the Road for Audience Network. The show, which films in Vancouver, was co-created by Alexander and Emmy-nominated comedy writer Peter Tilden and screenwriter Dean Craig, and focuses on a band of dysfunctional wannabe rock stars. The show has a 10-episode straight-to-series order.

Narcos showrunner/EP Eric Newman, Propagate Content chairman/co-CEO Ben Silverman and entrepreneur Chris Blackwell (Island Records founder) have partnered to produce series about the birth of the Jamaican music industry.
