IN THE NEWS

CBS’ broadcast of The 70th Annual Tony Awards delivered the Broadway celebration’s largest audience since 2001, according to Nielsen preliminary Live+SD numbers for Sunday. The ceremony averaged 8.73 million (up 35 percent from 6.46 million last year), 1.6 A18-49 (up 60 percent from 1.0) and 2.0 among A25-54 (up 54 percent from 1.3).

Nicole Kidman, who just wrapped production on HBO limited series Big Little Lies opposite Reese Witherspoon, is set to star in another TV project. The Oscar winner will headline the sophomore season of SundanceTV thriller Top of the Lake: China Girl. The story picks up four years after the events of Season 1, as Elisabeth Moss’ Detective Robin Griffin investigates the case of an unidentified body that washes up on Sydney’s Bondi Beach.

Showtime is offering viewers the chance to sample Roadies, the music series from Cameron Crowe, ahead of its linear premiere on Sunday, June 26 at 10p. Consumers who do not subscribe to the network can sample a TV-14 rated version of the show’s debut episode for free on YouTube, Facebook and SHO.com. The pilot is also available for download as a free video podcast on iTunes and across multiple television and streaming providers’ devices, websites and applications and free On Demand channels.

TNT and TBS are teaming with Wattpad, the global multiplatform entertainment company for original stories, to give the Wattpad community the opportunity to have their stories adapted for the networks. The first project will be The Tales from the Crypt horror block from TNT and executive producer M. Night Shyamalan. “Our partnership with Wattpad is a perfect intersection of content and fan engagement, where fans actually have the chance to directly influence and, in some cases even have their material optioned and developed by our networks,” said Justin Williams, SVP of digital ventures for TNT and TBS. The deal includes access to Wattpad insights and data, which will assist in identifying talent and trends across genres.

The cultural relevance of programming, and its impact on viewership and engagement, has become an increasingly important part of the media consumption conversation. What’s hitting the right note right now, and why, according to TruthCo.? Here’s the branding and insight firm’s "cultural take": "We’ve been recommending Ali Wong’s hilarious Netflix special, Baby Cobra. The Fresh Off the Boat writer appears on stage seven months pregnant and makes no effort to hide it; instead, she wears a tight dress and uses her pregnant body as a powerful prop in her extremely filthy comedy. The special is a slap in the face to traditional visions of race and motherhood, reflecting a cultural moment receptive to raw perspectives on mothering as expectations of what a typical female experience looks like are being reframed."

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

OBB Pictures, along with 3 Arts Entertainment and Kids at Play, has announced the pick-up of OBB’s The 5th Quarter with a straight-to-series, 12-episode order. The new scripted comedy will premiere in fall 2016 on Go90. The mockumentary tells the greatest untold and untrue stories in sports history and will feature comedians, actors, professional athletes and others playing both themselves and fictional characters throughout the episodes. Notables include Blake Griffin, Chandler Parsons, Shawne Merriman, JB Smoove, George Lopez, Adam Pally, Chris Parnell, Jerry O’Connell, Kenny Mayne, Mark Cuban and Ahmad Rashad.

James Cameron and producer Simcha Jacobovici have joined forces with National Geographic Channel and Discovery Canada for Search for Atlantis. The two-hour documentary special is slated to premiere internationally this winter. “Finding the historical and archeological truth behind the Atlantis myth has always been a fascination of mine,” said Cameron. “Our exploration team will investigate several new theories about where the real Atlantis was, who these mysterious people were, and what disaster wiped them from the Earth over three millennia ago.”

Production has begun on The White Princess, the follow-up to Starz mini-series The White Queen. Adapted from Philippa Gregory’s best-selling novel of the same name, the 8-episode original limited series drama is helmed by writer Emma Frost as showrunner and EP. Full casting has also been announced with newcomer Jacob Collins-Levy (Glitch, Holding the Man) set to play Henry VII and Jodie Comer (Doctor Foster, My Mad Fat Diary) portraying Princess Elizabeth.

STUNTS

Santana reunites in a special concert performance premiering on AXS TV on Sunday, June 19 at 8p. The event airs as part of the network’s "Whole Lotta Love” Father’s Day Marathon, starting at 10a and putting the spotlight on eight of the decade’s most influential acts.

Science Channel airs a Survivorman and Son Father’s Day special on Sunday, June 19 at 10p. There’s plenty of time for bonding – Les Stroud and his son Logan are left in the Ecuadorian jungle without a guide.

COMING UP

Canadian production company Breakthrough Entertainment and PBS have partnered on an all-rights broadcast deal to bring the newly completed, two-hour film revival of L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables to North American audiences. NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Comedy Central has renewed Idiotsitter for a 10-episode second season to bow in 2017. A&E debuts Black And White, a weekly in-studio show that tackles issues of race, on Wednesday, July 13 at 10:30p.  Hosted by Christian Finnegan and Sherrod Small, the series covers the headlines sweeping the nation via the points of views of the comedians and longtime friends.

AT&T and Audience Network premiere My Fighting Season, the next Installment of Ricky Schroder’s war documentary series on Tuesday, July 5 at 9p. It follows US Army soldiers fighting in Afghanistan from the perspective of their own cameras. “My Fighting Season provides the viewer with the most realistic combat experience on the modern day battlefield ever shown,” said EP Schroder. “When you understand what we ask of these men, your respect for them reaches new heights.”

CASTING

TVline reports that when Gotham returns this fall, little Ivy Pepper will have transformed into Poison Ivy. Hence, Clare Foley is exiting the FOX drama. Casting is underway for an actress in her late teens to assume the series regular role.

KID STUFF

Upcoming Nickelodeon TV movie Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie will feature 19 original voices from the television series. Lane Toran, the original voice of Arnold, and Jamil Smith, the original voice of Gerald, will supplement the returning cast by lending their voices to several other roles.  Project debuts in 2017.

Mighty Magiswords, which debuted last year on the Cartoon Network Anything micro-network as a 15-second interactive series, is becoming a full-length linear series launching this fall. Almost 400 pieces of platform-specific original content have been custom developed, including shorts, vlogs, web and mobile games, and interactive narrative content. Cartoon Network will introduce the expanded concept this summer through a series of character-driven shorts, a web game and on-air spots.

Discovery Family Channel premieres Robin Hood: Mischief in Sherwood on Sunday, July 3 at 8:30a. Series features 10-year-old Robin and his young friends as they stand up to Prince John’s antics in Sherwood Forest.

GLOBAL GOINGS ON

CBC has acted quickly to support the goal of Women in View’s 2X More initiative. Women are making up half or more of all directors or directing 50 percent or more of all episodes of upcoming seasons of Murdoch Mysteries, Heartland, This Life, Baroness Von Sketch Show and Workin’ Moms. “I’m proud that CBC, in partnership with our producers, is the first Canadian broadcaster to take a proactive step forward to increase the number of women directing scripted television in this country,” said Heather Conway, EVP, English Services, CBC, and member of the 2X More Advisory Group.

Discovery Communications has struck a long-term partnership with ORF, the public broadcaster in Austria, ensuring that the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will be available to Austrian audiences across multiple screens. The sublicense package will include selected digital rights to the content ORF broadcasts on its linear TV channels. Eurosport will hold pay rights to air all Olympic Games action on its German language channels available in Austria, as well as across all digital, OTT and mobile platforms.

GRB Entertainment has secured deals for two factual make-over series in Canada.  Blue Ant Media acquired Secret Guide to Fabulous from executive producers Kelly Ripa and Mark Conseulos, while Game TV took My First Home. In addition, Sweden’s Elk Production obtained family-oriented food competition format Recipe Rehab.

Keshet International’s game show Boom! garnered 2 million viewers on Spain’s Antena 3 last Wednesday. The viewing figures equate to a 20.3 percent average share for the network, beating rival game show Pasapalbra (Tele Cinco) with an increase in share of 5.7 percent. The channel has commissioned an additional 65 episodes of the show.

DIGITAL DOINGS

Netflix has picked up half-hour animated comedy series Big Mouth. From real-life best friends Nick Kroll (Kroll Show) and Andrew Goldberg (Family Guy), it explores the adventures of two teenagers going through puberty. Kroll and John Mulaney (Saturday Night Live) will voice the lead characters, Nick and Andrew. Series is coming to the streaming service in 2017.

Daddy Don’t Go bows on Vimeo on Sunday, June 19. Film illuminates the socioeconomic pressures low-income fathers face and provides portraits of men who persevere.

Netflix has set the second season premiere date for Narcos. The drama returns with ten new episodes on Friday, September 2 at 12:01a.
