Axed last month after four seasons on ABC, Nashville will continue to season five on CMT. SVOD partner Hulu will once again stream the show the day after initial air. Produced by Lionsgate TV, ABC Studios and Opry Entertainment, the country music drama will have thirtysomething creators Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz, who had been appointed before the cancellation, at the helm. “Nashville is a perfect addition to our evolving line-up of big music specials, documentaries, and original series,” said Brian Philips, president of CMT. “We see our fans and ourselves in this show and we will treasure it like no other network.”
The competition for top talent is forcing broadcast networks to up their game, according to the “Peak TV” panel at the ATX Festival in Austin. “You’re the last stop on the train on pitches. They’re going to start at Netflix and then they’ll go to HBO and Showtime and then the broadcast networks,” said ABC Studios EVP Patrick Moran. “It does put a burden on us in the broadcast space to work harder and do better.”
Sony Pictures Television will offer stories of hope and progress in its international “Picture This Festival for the Environment,” featuring short videos from contests held by the company’s networks around the world. Grand prize winner of $5000 and a Sony 4K swag package will be named at an event at Sony Pictures Studios in LA this fall.
Heading into the series finale of CBS’s Person of Interest, creator/exec producer Jonathan Nolan said at the ATX Television Festival that the episode will “revisit relationships that we never got a chance to get to before.” As for a possible reboot someday, fellow creator/exec producer Greg Plageman teased, “It’s something I can see another incarnation of someday…[but] by the time the bloodbath of the finale is over you might have different thoughts.” Series ender airs Tuesday, June 21.
Grey’s Anatomy will welcome back Justin Chambers, Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr. and Kevin McKidd for season 13. The cast members’ contracts had been up. They join Ellen Pompeo, who already inked a new deal; Sara Ramirez elected to leave the ABC stalwart.
Two sisters who appeared on Oxygen’s Bad Girls Club are suing producers and several cast members over an incident that occurred during the reality show’s 15th season, that involved a hair-pulling, slapping confrontation. Alleging assault and battery, among other things, the suit claims, “The network-heads themselves approved, ratified and knowingly agreed to the attack.” Amanda and Victoria Hepperle’s short stint ended after the scuffle.
Revolt will be a presenting partner for the Urbanworld Film Festival, created to advance the presence and impact of diverse content creators. “Revolt is about music and creators at its core and this partnership aligns directly with our mission to be a platform for creatives everywhere,” said net CEO Keith Clinkscales. Event takes place September 21-25 in NYC.
