CNN is not moving forward with a second season of Believer after host Reza Aslan called President Trump a “piece of s—“ (also “an embarrassment to humankind”) in a tweet. The comment was a reaction to Trump’s remarks after the London terrorist attacks. “In these politically charged times, the tenor of our nation’s discourse has become complicated, and I recognize that CNN needs to protect its brand as an unbiased news outlet,” said Aslan. “Similarly, I need to honor my voice. I am not a journalist. I am a social commentator and scholar. And so I agree with CNN that it is best that we part ways. I look forward to partnering with another platform in the future.”

Why the flip flop on a fall time slot for This Is Us (NBC moved the hit show from Tuesday to Thursday, then back to Tuesday again)? “We have to do what’s right for a show that is groundbreaking and incredible in every way,” said NBC president of entertainment Jennifer Salke at the ATX Television Festival. “We do have a big show that we feel like no matter where you put it, the audience will follow,” said Salke, but using it to boost ratings on a Thursday would have meant disrupting the storyline’s flow for two months for Thursday Night Football and the holidays, and “that would be a disservice.”

On an ATX panel discussing limited series, Showtime president of programming Gary Levine noted that while it’s “tempting” to produce the kind of programming that attracts major stars unwilling to agree to a long-term commitment, “In some ways we may be hurting ourselves because the brass ring still is the long ongoing series where a network invests in a show, an audience invests in those characters, and the love flows in all directions.”

The Grand Tour co-host Richard Hammond was in car crash while filming season 2 of the Amazon Prime series. While Hammond suffered no serious injuries, the Rimac Concept One he was driving burst into flames after he climbed out. “It was the biggest crash I’ve ever seen ant the most frightening,” tweeted co-host Jeremy Clarkson.

FX tapped into current events to promote Russian spy drama The Americans to Emmy voters, with print and digital ads in the Sunday editions of the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post that show a Russian flag flying over the U.S. Capitol building and the words, “The Russians are here.” A URL leads to FX’s For Your Consideration web site for the show’s fifth season. FX also bought ads on Sunday political shows, including Face the Nation.

That said, storytelling on The Americans, set in the early 1980s, isn’t affected by today’s headlines, according to series creator Joe Weisberg at the ATX TV Festival. “When we write the show, we’re in a bubble,” said Weisberg. “We don’t want people watching and thinking those clever writers put something there about Donald Trump.”

In an interview with conservative cable net Newsmax, former Fox News anchor Bill O’Reilly, fired in April amid allegations of sexual harassment, said, “I may come back to television, it depends….Whoever I work for is going to have to have a lot of courage to stop the far left from attacking sponsors and spreading lies about people.”

Verizon ’s upcoming OTT service won’t be “just a me-too kind of thing,” said Marni Walden, the company’s EVP and president of media and telematics, at Guggenheim Media Day. Without getting into specifics, Walden said, “It’s definitely not quantity, it’s the right quality….We’re not looking for the kitchen sink on this one.”

The Beast has been put down at Fox. A pilot for the medical procedural from ER’s Neal Baer was ordered earlier this year, but was never made .

NBC and the American Black Film Festival announced Duain Richmond as the winner of this year’s Star Project, an annual monologue competition looking for acting talent from culturally diverse backgrounds. Winner gets opportunities to break into film and television. Keep an eye on Richmond – Star Project alumni include Emayatzy Corinealdi (Roots), Kelcy Griffin (Power) and Sheaun McKinney (Great News).

Altice USA announced that through its Altice Connects community initiative, it will be partnering with three of southwest Arkansas’ leading universities in support of fostering the next generation of STEM leaders. Students will have the opportunity to experience real-world applications of STEM and learn about STEM careers and the skills needed to innovate.

RATINGS

Republicans and Democrats might spar over who came out ahead during former FBI director James Comey’s testimony on Thursday, but one sure winner was CBS’s Late Show. The talker earned a 2.8/7 HH rating in early numbers, with its biggest overnight rating since Stephen Colbert took over as host in September 2015. That’s up 65% versus last year and up 27% from the prior first-run Thursday show.

The Comey hearing was also a boon to cable news, which pulled in almost 9 million viewers across Fox News, MSNBC and CNN from 10a-1p. FNC was first in viewers with 3.1 million, followed by CNN (3.05 million) and MSNBC (2.72 million). CNN topped the news demo with 1.02 million A25-53;w MSNBC was second with 630,000, and Fox grabbed 438,000.

In primetime cable news Thursday, Fox News had 3.18 million total viewers and 667,000 A25-54; MSNBC drew 2.75 million viewers and 757,000 in the demo, and CNN grabbed 1.71 million viewers and 601,000 among A25-54.

Through Friday’s Game 4 on ABC, the NBA Finals is averaging a total live audience of 19.8 million viewers (TV plus streaming), making it the most-watched series since 1998.

AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead returned for season 3 on Sunday to 4.7 million viewers, 2.7 million A25-54 and 2.4 million A18-49, according to Nielsen Live+3 numbers, making it the #3 series on cable in 2017, after The Walking Dead and Talking Dead.

Spanish-language Estrella TV announced that its KRCA-62 TV channel in Los Angeles had the #2 most viewed newscast during the 11p hour regardless of language during May sweeps.

IN MEMORIAM

Actress Glenne Headly died June 8. She was 62. In addition to theater and film roles, Headly was nominated for an Emmy for Lonesome Dove, and was in production for Hulu series Future Man when she passed away.

Actor Adam West died June 9 after a short battle with leukemia. He was 88. Best known as Batman in the campy 1966-68 series, West more recently voiced the mayor of Quahog on Family Guy. “Adam West exemplified heroism,” tweeted film Batman Ben Affleck. “Kind, funny and an all around great guy. Thank you for showing us all how it’s done.”
