Good morning. It’s Tuesday June 9, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

NBC Sports Group captured the Claret Jug, striking a 12-year deal with The R&A to form a US media partnership beginning with The Open in 2017. The move will shift the tournament’s long-standing run with ABC/ESPN to bring coverage across all media to NBC and Golf Channel for The Open, The Senior Open Championship, and The Amateur Championship, as well as the RICOH Women’s British Open. The agreement also includes coverage of the Walker Cup and Curtis Cup, in years when these international amateur team events are hosted by The R&A and Ladies’ Golf Union.

“The R&A is synonymous with the traditions and history of golf, and The Open is golf’s original championship. NBC Sports is proud to present The Open Championship, and to work with The R&A on their initiatives to grow the game around the globe,” said Mark Lazarus, Chairman of NBC Sports Group. “This partnership will allow NBC Sports, Golf Channel and NBC Universo to serve the legions of sports fans in the U.S. with complete coverage that reflects the prestige of The R&A’s championships.”

“We are delighted to announce that from 2017, The Open will be broadcast by NBC Sports Group. They have unparalleled experience in golf and have demonstrated a genuine desire to showcase and promote The Open and The R&A’s elite championships through their extensive range of channels and digital platforms,” said Peter Dawson, Chief Executive of The R&A. “The United States is home to millions of fans of The Open and we know that through NBC Sports Group, they will enjoy world-class coverage of the Championship.”

ON THE AIR

Two games into the 2015 NBA Finals, the series ranks as the most-watched (18,321,000 viewers P2+) and highest-rated (10.6 US household) ever on ABC through the first pair of contests, per Nielsen Fast Nationals. Sunday night’s matchup delivered 18,795,000 viewers, which was the most-watched NBA Finals Game 2 ever on the network and up 26 percent from last season’s equitable matchup. Additionally, Game 2 delivered a 10.5 rating, up 19 percent%. On the digital front, NBA Finals Game 2 on WatchESPN generated a record 704,000 unique viewers and an average minute audience of 173,900, which is the second-largest audience for an NBA game ever on the platform.

Fast national data from Nielsen also saw an average of 22 million viewers watching NBC on Saturday from 6:45-7p to watch American Pharoah claim the Triple Crown at Belmont. The full race portion of the telecast (spanning 6:15-7:15p) averaged 18.6 million viewers and ranks as the third most-watched Belmont Stakes on record. Post-Belmont coverage from 7-7:15p saw gains as word spread about the win, scoring a 10.9/25 rating and 18.3 million viewers  up a respective 8% and 2% from last year’s post-race quarter hour.

As expected, the IOC formally approved multiple new events on Monday in snowboarding, Alpine skiing, speedskating and curling for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, according to the AP. New on the docket will be big air in snowboarding, mass start in speedskating, mixed doubles in curling, and a team skiing event. The snowboard parallel slalom event was subsequently dropped from the Olympic lineup.

The Sun Belt Conference and ESPN revealed early game selections for broadcast ahead of the 2015 college football season as well as game times for the conference’s previously released midweek package. The slate opens on Sept. 3 with Ohio/Idaho on ESPN3 at 8p, while Charlotte/Georgia State hits ESPNU at 2:30p.

Speaking of college football, this year’s Foster Farms Bowl will be played on Dec. 26 with Bowl executive director Gary Cavalli unveiling the date. The matchup will pit the fourth selection from the Pac-12 and an upper-echelon Big Ten team with kickoff set for 9:15p on ESPN.
