PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Nat Geo pulled the plug on a movie adaptation of Bill O’Reilly’s Killing Patton, slated for 2019. It would have been the fifth in a series that started with Killing Jesus. “It was in development for a couple of years, and it was a difficult project to crack,” said the network in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news. “Like most projects in development, it didn’t go the distance, so we passed on it.” Nat Geo is majority owned by 21st Century Fox, owner of Fox News, which cut O’Reilly loose in April amid claims of sexual harassment.

AMC is opening writers’ rooms for three projects under consideration for potential series orders: NOS4A2 from Jami O’Brien (Fear the Walking Dead); Pandora from Sam Vincent & Jonathan Brackley (Humans); and Silent History, from Claire Carre & Charles Spano (Embers). The projects fall under AMC’s “scripts-to-series” model, in which AMC skips the traditional pilot process and instead opens writers’ rooms to develop scripts for several episodes and a detailed look at a potential first season before deciding whether to move to a straight-to-series order.

T Group Productions signed an overall co-production deal with Madica Productions calling for Madica to create, develop and produce unscripted and scripted programming, taking brands, talent and IP and converting them into content that lives across all genres to be co-produced with T Group in the United States, Canada as well as internationally.

TV advertising consistently outperformed digital in ROI, and provided a higher return on investment than print or radio, according to a study from Neustar that covered 2010-2016. In 2017, consumer electronics marketers report almost 4 times the business lift for a 1$ TV spend; for movie marketers, it’s over 3 times. “Dollar for dollar, TV provides the most scale and delivers the highest return on ad spend from both a sales and awareness perspective,” said the report, commissioned by Turner and Horizon Media. “It’s important to note that even TV will reach a saturation point, and the next marketing dollar should be spent elsewhere. To ensure an optimized marketing mix, advertisers should adopt a data-driven approach that can inform the ideal media allocation across all channels based on all internal and external market conditions to meet their performance goals.”
