IN THE NEWS
Scott Pelley is leaving his post as CBS Evening News anchor to become a full-time correspondent for 60 Minutes. Pelley had been doing double duty since taking the anchor seat in 2011. “The milestone 50th season of 60 Minutes requires Scott’s full contribution, and we look forward to important reporting from him for many years to come,” said David Rhodes, president of CBS News. (The newsmagazine will also soon face competition from NBC’s Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly, launching June 4.)
“CBS has been great to me for nearly 30 years,” said Pelley. “I’m glad to accept this assignment with continuing gratitude.” While CBS’s evening news broadcast lags behind ABC, tops in viewers in the most recent sweeps period, and NBC, first in the demo, CBS notes that during Pelley’s tenure, its broadcast grew in audience in each of its first 5 seasons, the longest run of growth for any network evening broadcast in the history of the modern ratings system.
Kathy Griffin was disinvited from CNN’s New Year’s Eve program after the comedian posted a video clip showing a likeness of Donald Trump’s severed head. “CNN has terminated our agreement with Kathy Griffin,” tweeted the news net. Griffin’s New Year’s co-host since 2007, Anderson Cooper, called the video “clearly disgusting and inappropriate.” In an apology, Griffin acknowledged, “I’m a comic. I crossed the line….I went way too far.”
Also offended: Squatty Potty, the maker of bathroom products featured on Shark Tank in 2014, which dumped its ad campaign featuring Griffin.
Cinemax canceled Quarry after one season. Series co-creator Michael D. Fuller announced the news via a lengthy blog post, noting that several factors contributed to the show’s fate “but a regime change at HBO and a re-(re?)-branding at Cinemax were of particular significance. We attempted to find another home for the show, but were unable to do so.”
Vanessa Hudgens was named the third judge on Fox’s So You think You Can Dance, joining Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy. Season bows Monday, June 12 at 8p. Meanwhile, Timbaland is joining ABC music competition series Boy Band as its third architect, joining Nick Carter and Emma Bunton starting Thursday, June 22 at 8p.
The Late Late Show with James Corden welcomes guests from both sides of the pond when it broadcasts from Central Hall Westminster in London, Tuesday, June 6 thru Thursday, June 8 on CBS. Scheduled to appear are Nicole Kidman, David Beckham, Emily Blunt, Tom Cruise, Ed Sheeran, Jennifer Hudson and Kit Harington with music from Harry Styles and Kings of Leon. Sky, the exclusive home of the show in the UK, will broadcast the episodes on Sky 1 and Now TV.
Turner Classic Movies announced its summer programming lineup, with Audrey Hepburn, the net’s Star of the Month, showcased every Monday night in June. TCM Spotlight: Gay Hollywood highlights the impact of the LGBT community on cinematic history every Thursday in June. Summer Under the Stars returns paying tribute to 31 different stars in 31 days, and in July, TCM Spotlight: Alfred Hitchcock pays tribute to the master of suspense with 40 films airing Wednesday and Friday evening.
Taking the stage for CBS’s broadcast of The 71st Annual Tony Awards on Sunday, June 11 at 8p will be Orlando Bloom, Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey, Josh Gad, Josh Groban, Taraji P. Henson, Scarlett Johansson, Anna Kendrick, Keegan-Michael Key, Bette Midler, Ben Platt and Olivia Wilde.
ESPN ‘s NFL Coverage will have a very different look next season. After Chris Berman was taken off the pro football beat, comes the news that John Clayton has been laid off after 23 years.

ADVERTISING
Kantar Millward Brown has partnered with Samba TV in the U.S. to launch a single-source measurement solution for television advertising effectiveness. The partnership combines Samba’s TV dataset with Kantar Millward Brown’s brand marketing analytics platform Ignite Network, to provide marketers the level of granularity in TV effectiveness measurement that they are accustomed to from digital measurement.
“In addition to programming, the consistent theme in every upfront discussion in 2017 was performance,” Samba CEO Ashwin Bavin tells Cynopsis. “There is tremendous pressure on programmers to show how TV advertising performs relative to other forms of advertising. Our solution brings together two very large datasets, to measure from an attitudinal perspective how people really feel about TV advertising.”
“Marketers continue to search for the right balance between digital and traditional advertising, but according to our latest Getting Digital Right study, 50% still aren’t confident they have the optimal media mix,” adds Marc Ryan, Chief Product & Innovation Officer, Media & Digital at Kantar Millward Brown. “Our partnership with Samba TV is providing marketers the ability to more precisely track the effectiveness of their TV spend, using the same rigorous methods applied to digital.”
CASTING
Wallace Shawn (Toy Story, My Dinner with Andre) nabbed the recurring role of Jerry North in Season 2 of EPIX’s Graves.
Odette Annable (Pure Genius) signed on for the series regular of Reign in Season 3 of CW’s Supergirl.
Dale Soules , who recurred as inmate Frieda Berlin in Season 2 of Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, was upped to series regular for Season 6.
KIDS
Nickelodeon is launching a collection of interactive episodes in its ad-free Noggin video subscription service. Beginning June 1, initially on iOS platforms, the play-along videos enable preschoolers to engage with characters by tapping, touching, swiping or speaking to navigate through enhanced educational experiences that promote science, technology, engineering, math and social-emotional skills. At launch, more than 30 play-along videos will be introduced, including Blaze and the Monster Machines, Bubble Guppies, Team Umizoomi and short-form content featuring characters Moose and Zee. The videos were created by an in-house team using a proprietary authoring tool that fosters the simultaneous creation of interactive digital content alongside the production of linear TV content, and they’re the first in a new production model the kids network plans to embrace.
DIGITAL DOINGS
Hulu documentary Dumb: The Story of Big Brother Magazine streams through June 6, charting the rise and fall of the irreverent publication.
