CynopsisSports
Good morning. It’s Monday June 24, 2019 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

FOX Sports continues its hot Summer with two more big events involving MLB over the next couple of weeks, beginning with the Yankees and Red Sox playing in the London Series on June 29 (ESPN carries it on the 30th) and then the annual All-Star Game out of Cleveland on July 9. Joe Buck, analyst John Smoltz and reporter Ken Rosenthal will call Saturday’s matchup in the UK with the game beginning 1:10p. With the MLB on FOX team preparing for both events, Cynopsis Sports asked FOX Sports VP/Head of Productions and Operations Brad Zager about the events and season so far.

Zager on lessons learned so far this season: The biggest lessons and surprises so far in the first half of the season is the depth of Stars and teams in MLB, The Yankees in first place even with Stanton and Judge missing extended time, The Twins and Braves continued growth adding to the established contenders like Hou, CHC, and LAD. When you talk about players, the greatness of Mike Trout will never get old to watch and cover, the Bellinger/Yelich anything you can do, I can do better march through the NL has been so much fun to watch and great for the game.

On the London Series: We are looking at the Red Sox & Yankees playing in London the same way we look at all MLB Jewel Events like the ASG and Postseason. This is an opportunity to not just play a regular season game in London but take one of sports greatest rivalries and play it somewhere it has never been played and expose it to an even larger fan base. This has included us having specialty shoots with both teams, additional cameras, and the addition of our pregame show on-site.

On production: We are lucky that MLB did all the heavy lifting of making it ready for baseball, we worked closely with them to make sure that our camera positions and audio will be to our standards as in any MLB Stadium. But we also want to make sure that we show off the uniqueness of playing the game there and I know that will be a priority for our director Matt Gangl throughout the game.

On the All-Star Game: We are going to build on the success we have had last couple years with access to the players during the game, more in-game interviews. We will have a skycam again which we don’t get to do during the regular season and enhanced audio with mics spread out all over the field. But most of all we want to make sure that really tell the stories of these players and what makes them All-Stars, our Producer Pete Macheska always does a great job of telling the story of the 1st half of the season and setup the second half drama still to come.

PROGRAMMING

Big collegiate news over the weekend as multiple reports wrote that UConn is poised to depart the American Athletic Conference and would return to the Big East for basketball and Olympic sports in 2020 and an official announcement expected to come as early as this week. Connecticut’s football team would subsequently need to find another home or go independent with the move. Conference bylaws require UConn to pay a $10 million withdrawal fee and give 27 months’ notice before leaving. The AAC’s new deal with ESPN begins in 2020-21, and does not change if the AAC has only 11 football teams, although the conference will explore bringing in a new member to stay at 12, according to The AP.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup continues to show gains with this year’s tournament. FOX Sports reports that through the first day of the round of 16, the company’s metered market scores are up 17% over the equitable day in 2015. Norway’s penalty kick win over Australia drew a 1.6/4 to rank as the best numbers of the 2019 tournament for a non-US contest.

Meanwhile, Telemundo Deportes’ coverage of Women’s World Cup also saw upticks in the Group Stage. Through the 36 Group Stage matches that aired across Telemundo, Universo and Telemundo Deportes and NBC Sports app, the network scored a Total Audience Delivery average of 194,000 viewers, up 50% increase from the 2015 Group Stage average of 129,000 (excluding 2015 Mexico matches, as that team didn’t qualify for this year’s event). Last week’s USA/Sweden scored a Total Audience Delivery average of 422,000 viewers.

In addition, NBCSN, for the first time ever, will simulcast in Spanish two knockout phase matchups beginning today with team USA’s matchup against Spain at 11:30a, followed by Canada/Sweden at 2:30p. Both matches will also air on Telemundo and Universo respectively.

Newly drafted Zion Williamson and RJ Barrett are expected to be among highlights of the 11-day, 83-game schedule for MGM Resorts NBA Summer League 2019 in Las Vegas when their teams square off on July 5 at 9:30p on ESPN. This year will see every MGM Resorts NBA Summer League game run live on television for the second straight year, with ESPN networks and NBA TV combining to televise a record number of games. MGM Resorts NBA Summer League 2019, which features all 30 NBA teams and the Chinese and Croatian National Teams, will tip off with 10 games on July 5 and include five games on NBA TV and a tripleheader on ESPN. NBA TV will air a record 40 games overall, beginning with the MGM Resorts NBA Summer League opener when the Croatian National Team, making its event debut, squares off against the Detroit Pistons at 3p.

Meanwhile, ESPN takes on the 2019 NBA free agency period, led by The Jump: NBA Free Agency Special on Sunday from 5-10p with the NBA free agency period beginning at 6p. Prior to free agency tipping off, ESPN Senior NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski and ESPN Senior NBA Writer Zach Lowe are reuniting for the Woj & Lowe Free Agency Special tomorrow at 7p on ESPN2. ESPN will air additional episodes of The Jump: Free Agency Special throughout the week.
