IN THE NEWS

Geraldo Rivera is headed for the exit. “It’s been a great run and I appreciate having had the opportunity,” tweeted Fox News’ “The Five” host. “Being [the] odd man out isn’t always easy. For the time being, I’m still Correspondent at Large.” Rivera’s final appearance alongside his rotating co-hosts is scheduled for Friday, June 30.

“The Bear” allows brands and clients to “get closer to the intellectual property, closer to the talent,” said Disney Advertising’s SVP of Entertainment and Addressable Solutions John Campbell. The second season of the FX hit has signed 12 advertisers to sponsorships, including Coca-Cola, Stella Atrois and Resy.

Warner Bros. Discovery adopted its Unified ID 2.0 solution across Max and discovery+. The solution is designed for better addressability and consumer ad experience, using an identity solution pioneered by The Trade Desk. “Across the open internet, we are looking for more effective ways to connect with a consumer who is using multiple devices, apps and more in an effort to serve a consistent and relevant ad experience through tools like Unified ID 2.0.”, said The Trade Desk’s VP of Inventory Development Will Doherty.

Time to graduate? “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” is ending with season four. The teen musical comedy spinoff will kick off its final season on August 9.

Disney+’s “Secret Invasion” is now part of the AI controversy. After the series premiere on June 14, director Ali Selim said show’s opening credits were generated by artificial intelligence. “When we reached out to the AI vendors, that was part of it – it just came right out of the shape-shifting, Skrull world identity, you know?”, he told Polygon. That sparked backlash, with one user posting on Twitter, “Do better Marvel.”

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

LL Cool J and Ice T have teamed up for a new A&E series. In honor of Hip Hop’s 50th anniversary, and in partnership with the Universal Hip Hop Museum, the rappers will star in “Hip Hop Treasures” as they track down industry memorabilia, such as The Notorious B.I.G.’s jersey, DMX’s Aaliyah car, Flavor Flax’s clocks and more. CeeLo Green, Soulja Boy, DMC and others will also make an appearance. The series is slated to premiere on August 12 at 10p.

Blumhouse TV acquired the rights to develop the novel “The Quiet Tenant.” Clémence Michallon’s debut novel, an “expertly paced psychological thriller,” according to the New York Times, will become a limited series or streaming movie. Michallon will executive produce the project.

Andrew Renzi signed an overall deal with Boardwalk Pictures. The director of Netflix’s “Pepsi, Where’s My Jet?” and his production company North of Now will create non-fiction films and TV shows, in the latest overall deal for Boardwalk. “Renzi is pushing the boundaries of what a documentary can be,” said Jordan Wynn of Boardwalk Studios. “He combines a modern pop sensibility with a mastery of classical storytelling to create a wholly original style that resonates with audiences around the world.”

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

“Nine Perfect Strangers” returns for a second season at Hulu. Nicole Kidman will once again star and executive produce the series, with a cast list featuring Liv Ullman, Murray Bartlett and Dolly De Leon. Season two of the streamer’s most-watched original is said to take place in the Swiss Alps, where nine guests try to amend their lifestyles at a 10-day boutique wellness resort.

SHOWTIME’s “The Chi” returns August 4. The sixth season of the drama series will stream on Paramount+ with SHOWTIME before making its on-air debut on August 6 at 9p.

“Last Call: When a Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York” debuts on HBO on July 9. The four-part docuseries from director Anthony Caronna and executive producer Howard Gertler centers on the homophobia and hate crimes of the 1990s, as well as the rise of the AIDS crisis. Subsequent episodes will air Sundays through July 30 at 9p.

Max’s “Project Greenlight” debuts July 13. Focusing on the next generation of female filmmakers, the Max Original docuseries pulls back the curtain on the filmmaking process from start to finish. All ten episodes of the series executive produced by Issa Rae will be available on the streamer on the premiere day.

“Los Artistas: Primeros Trazos” premieres on ViX on July 7. Created by bestselling author María Dueñas, the original dramedy series starring Maxi Iglesias and Ximena Romo is the first of Dueñas’ two projects as part of her first-look agreement with the Spanish-language streaming service.

New original drama series “Average Joe” starring Deon Cole premieres June 26 on BET+. The series is inspired by the life of Robb Cullen, who executive produces the series.

COMING UP

“Saturday Night Live” celebrates its 50th birthday at Radio City Music Hall next year. Lorne Michaels announced at the Cannes Lions Festival that the celebrations will get a head start as part of NBC’s coverage of the Paris Olympics in July and August of 2024 “It will be emotional but everyone will show up because it’s important,” said Michaels. “The planning for it, which has taken the last six months and it’s not happening for another year and a half, there are a lot of events happening.”

CNN’s “The Fourth in America” special returns with an all-star lineup. Hosted by CNN’s Dana Bash, Boris Sanchez, Victor Blackwell and Cari Champion on July 4, the special will showcase coast-to-coast firework shows throughout the evening, with an ensemble performance by The US Air Force Band. Other featured performances include Post Malone, Demi Lovato, Zac Brown Band, Leon Bridges, Sheryl Crow and Darius Rucker.

NBCUniversal announced new talent-led content in its latest “The More You Know” campaign. Featuring Jenna Bush Hager, Lester Holt, Ariana Madix and others, the network aims to spread awareness through PSAs, social content and conversation. The latest topics cover food insecurity, media literacy, mentorship and the power of resting.
