“Dad Stop Embarrassing Me!”, starring and produced by Jamie Foxx, was not renewed for a second season on Netflix. The comedy was inspired by Foxx’s relationship with his daughter.

Fox officially canceled “The Moodys.” The net yanked the low-rated comedy, starring Denis Leary and Elizabeth Perkins, off the schedule in April after the fifth episode of season two, and brought the final episodes back this month to end the show’s run.

The US ad market jumped 56% year-over-year in May, according to new data from Standard Media Index. That follows a 53% rise in April and a 22% jump from March, versus pandemic-impacted 2020. For TV, the numbers were up 16% in March, 32% in April and 42% in May; digital grew by 38% in March, 84% in April and 69% in May.

Streaming accounted for 26% of time spent on TV during May, according to Nielsen’s new monthly measurement, The Gauge. Broadcast had an audience share of 25%, cable 39%, and “other” 9%. “The past year has categorically shifted the television viewing landscape,” said Brian Fuhrer, SVP, Product Strategy. “Even as people begin to dive back into their pre-pandemic activities, based on the changes many made to enable streaming coupled with the variety of newly introduced services, we expect people to keep sampling and exploring their options.”

Gray Television has created a new entity, Gray Sports + Entertainment Sales, to manage revenue generation for Gray-owned TV stations and digital assets. “One of the great strengths of Gray Television is the passionate communities we represent through the broad array of content we produce and distribute across many different platforms,” said Pat LaPlatney, President and Co-CEO of Gray Television. “This initiative showcases our unique programming to marketers through high-impact sponsorships and will help us serve our customers more effectively.”

New advertisers onboard for Discovery’s Shark Week (July 11-18) include Devour Frozen Foods, T-Mobile, Sonic Drive-In, and Vrbo. They join returning partners Cooper Tires, Wayfair, Geico, The Gorilla Glue Company and Home Depot. “We continue to innovate and provide unique sponsorships and organic opportunities for clients to communicate to our highly engaged audience,” said Scott Kohn, EVP, Ad Sales at Discovery, Inc. “We are thrilled with the creative and custom sponsorships that will seamlessly complement this year’s Shark Week programming across all of our linear and digital properties, including the very first Shark Week on discovery+.”

Netflix gave a straight-to-series order to a workplace comedy inspired by the front office of the Los Angeles Lakers. The show comes from Mindy Kaling (“The Office”), Elaine Ko (“Modern Family”), Lakers President Jeanie Buss and Warner Bros. Television.

Some crew members on the set of TBS’ upcoming cooking competition series “Rat in the Kitchen” went on strike after they said producers were unresponsive over requests about health benefits. The series is produced by Thinkfactory Media.

MTV renewed “The Challenge” for season 37. The news comes on the heels of the competition series scoring its best monthly share in over 13 years.

Anniew Ilonzeh (“Chicago Fire”) scored the lead in NBC drama pilot “Gertaway,” centered on a destination wedding at a isolated resort that’s taken hostage by criminals.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Turkish drama “Hercai: Love and Vengeance” premieres Tuesday, June 22 at 9p, with a two-hour episode. The series offers a mix of romance, rivalry and twists, steeped in cultural traditions.

Food-obsessed comedian Sebastian Maniscalco stars in new discovery+ series “Well Done with Sebastian Maniscalco.” Along with his wife Lana and mom Rose, Maniscalco explores culinary topics starting Thursday, August 12.

Food Network cake competition “Buddy vs. Duff” is back Sunday, July 18 at 9p. The net is also offering a sneak peek at new Kal Penn-hosted series “Money Hungry” on Sunday, July 25 at 10p, before the home cooking contest moves to its regular timeslot on Tuesday, July 27 at 10p.

New animated comedy “Tom and Jerry in New York” premieres on HBO Max Thursday, July 1, with Tom the resident mouser at a Big Apple hotel, and Jerry stirring up trouble.

AccuWeather Network has a new live 2-hour show, “AccuWeather Prime,” weeknights at 8p. Senior TV Weather Broadcaster Adam Del Rosso hosts.

Peacock has added three 8-part true crime series from Law&Crime: “Buried With Love,” “Vanished” and “Trial File.” The Law&Crime linear channel launched on Peacock in March.

COMING UP

AMC Networks content initiative “Can We Talk About This?”, hosted by Jordan Carlos (“The Nightly Show”), invites conversation around difficult issues, from dated content in classic movies to timely documentaries. Up next: “That’s Wild,” telling the story of three at-risk African American teens on a journey from the streets of Atlanta to the the outback of Colorado. The film airs Monday, July 19.

The 41st annual “A Capitol Fourth,” the Independence Day celebration on PBS, will be hosted by Vanessa Williams. The show was pre-recorded due to the pandemic with a live fireworks presentation, in lieu of the traditional live concert on the West Lawn of the US Capitol.

AXS TV is offering an “All Day Concerts” block on July 4 weekend, beginning Friday, July 2 with Ringo Starr.

The three-part reunion for the cast of Bravo’s “Married to Medicine” begins Sunday, June 27 at 9p, with host Andy Cohen moderating the drama.

Action movie “Jolt,” starring Kate Beckinsdale, will debut on Amazon on Friday, July 23. The film also stars Stanley Tucci, Bobby Cannavale, Laverne Cox and Susan Sarandon.

STREAMING

Roku reported a record number of accounts watched Roku Originals series (much of it from the library of shuttered Quibi), launched on May 20. The streamer said more than one in three users of The Roku Channel streamed a Roku Original series.

Fox News Media is teaming with Apple Podcast Subscriptions to launch a subscription-based channel, Fox News Podcasts+. For $2.99/month, the channel offers exclusive content in addition to ad-free versions of Fox News podcasts, and Fox News shows.

Redbox has teamed with Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment to add the Popcornflix Channel to Redbox Free Live TV. Launching later this month, the channel will feature programming including “Robert the Bruce,” “The Clearing,” and “King Solomon’s Mines” (2004), among many other titles.

GOING GLOBAL

A+E Networks UK announced the commission of “River Hunters” from Hello Halo Productions for Sky History, for a third season.

Moritz Polter and ITV Studios have unveiled the name of their new scripted label in Germany as Windlight Pictures, and announced three hires: Simone Ruff and Cosima Degler as Producers and Development Executives, and Georg Höss as Head of Legal & Business Affairs.

All3Media International struck a deal with NBCUniversal for game show format “Cash at Your Door,” which has been licensed to E! in the US, with All3Media International’s sister company Lion USA producing.

“LEGO Masters” has been picked up in two new European markets. Spanish broadcaster Atresmedia ordered a first series run from Banijay Iberia’s Shine Iberia, and TV 2 has commissioned the debut Norwegian adaptation from Mastiff Norway.

Viasat World has signed a renewal deal with Digi Group for its portfolio of factual and entertainment channels to air on Digi TV’s digital cable, satellite and Digi Online platforms, in Hungary and Romania, and on IPTV, in Hungary.

Saloon Media has started production on a 20-part docu-series, “History By The Numbers,” to be produced in association with Jupiter Entertainment. The series looks at the world’s collective global history by revealing surprising numerical facts about major historical events.

Principal Media has entered into an agreement with Taylor Street Films to represent worldwide broadcast and digital rights to six films on race and social justice.

Spectrum Networks reports it averaged more than 2.75 million daily viewing households in May, ranking as the most watched broadcast and cable news network by Spectrum customers across the networks’ nine-state footprint. “Our linear and digital audiences continue to grow, underscoring the value of local journalism that is accessible, reliable and trusted,” said Mike Bair, EVP of Spectrum Networks.

OWN’s “The Haves and The Have Nots” (1.237 million P2+) was Tuesday night’s #1 telecast on all of TV among African-American women (W25-54 & W18+). Over at Discovery sib TLC, “90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After” was the #1 cable program the week of May 31 among W25-54/18-49, and “Extreme Sisters” wrapped its freshman season with a season-high rating for key women demos.
