Will Smith will host his first-ever comedy variety special on Netflix, set to launch globally later this year. The one-hour show will include surprise celebrity guests, conversation, sketches, musical performances and more. Smith’s Westbrook Studios is producing the project, with Smith serving as an executive producer.

Fox’s “Call Me Kat” has a new boss for season two. Alissa Neubauer, who co-produced CBS’ “Mom,” has been named showrunner for the series’ second season. The move comes after Darlene Hunt’s exit.

Following the roaring success of the Wednesday, June 9 debut Disney+’s “Loki– the streamer’s most-watched series premiere – all original scripted, unscripted and animated series will debut on Wednesdays, instead of Fridays, effective July 1. Original movies will continue to drop on Fridays.

The price tag for Super Bowl commercials is rising toward an all-time high. Variety reports that NBC is talking to potential advertisers about charging $6 million for a 30-second spot. In addition, NBC is reportedly telling potential sponsors they may have to buy an equal amount of ad inventory in its 2022 broadcast of the Beijing Winter Olympics to guarantee prominent placement in its telecast of Super Bowl LVI.

iHeartMedia announced the 2021 lineup for the iHeartRadio Music Festival on September 17 and 18. Held at AREA15 in Las Vegas, the event will feature performances by Billie Eilish, Cheap Trick, Coldplay, Duo Lipa, Florida Georgia Line, Journey, Khalid, Lil Baby, Maroon 5, Nelly, Sam Hunt, Weezer and more. Ryan Seacrest will serve as host. The CW Network will broadcast the two-day special on Saturday, October 2 and Sunday, October 3, and livestream the concert vias the CW app and CWTV.com.

New York Women in Film & Television will hold their third annual NYWIFT Summit from June 22-25. The event examines strategies to create meaningful change in the industry, mobilizing support and leaderships.

HGTV has greenlit “The Nate & Jeremiah Home Project,” starring married designers and dads, Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent. The docu-series will follow the duo as they help families moving into a new place let go of things they no longer need to get a fresh start.

Mae Martin, star of Netflix comedy “Feel Good,” has inked a first-look deal with the show’s production collaborator, Objective Fiction. They’re already teaming to make new Netflix series “Programmed,” with other television and film projects expected to follow.

Shudder will produce the next installment of V/H/S horror anthology franchise, “V/H/S 94.” The original film will release in North America, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand later this year.

April Shih, who has written for FX series “Dave”, “Mrs. America” and “You’re the Worst,” has signed an overall deal with FX Productions and is launching her own production company, Diversity Hire Ltd. She’ll develop content for FX through the company including half-hour series, “Love Rules.”

Joe Pairulli and Luan Thomas, co-executive producers of Netflix’s “Cobra Kai,” have signed a multi-year overall deal with Sony Pictures Television, the studio behind the series. The pair will continue as EPs on Cobra Kai, as well as develop new series for cable and streaming services.

Casting notes: Chris Lowell (“Promising Young Woman”) has landed the lead opposite Hilary Duff in “How I Met Your Father,” the straight-to-series Hulu spinoff of the CBS comedy, “How I Met Your Mother.”… Starz original series “Dangerous Liaisons” has announced its cast, including Lesley Manville (“Phantom Thread”), Carice van Houten (“Game of Thrones”), Paloma Faith (“Youth”), Michael McElhatton (“Game of Thrones”) and Kosar Ali (“Rocks”).

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Somali cook, food journalist and cookbook author Hawa Hassan embarks on a quest to learn the stories behind traditional recipes and ingredients from around the world in “Spice of Life.” The series premieres with back-to-back episodes on Cooking Channel on Thursday, July 8 at 7p and 7:30p.

Apple TV+ released the premiere date for the second season of “Truth Be Told.” The anthology drama, starring and executive produced by Octavia Spencer, will make its global debut on Friday, August 20. The new season will also feature Kate Hudson in her first lead role in a television series.

Showtime debuts family drama “American Rust” on Sunday, September 12 at 10p. The nine-episode series stars Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney.

Meanwhile, Showtime Documentary Films announced new docu-series “UFO,” available to subscribers on Sunday, August 8. From J.J. Abrams and Glen Zipper, it explores our fascination with unidentified flying objects.

Peacock original series “Dr. Death” bows Sunday, September 12 at 9p. Based on the Wondery podcast of the same name, the show follows the true story of Dr. Christopher Duntsch (Jonathan Jackson).

American Masters documentaries, streaming on pbs.org/americanmasters for Pride Month, have added new digital series “Masters of Drag.” Hosted by “RuPaul’s Drag Race” star Peppermint, new episodes go live every Friday thought September 17.

Sun, sand, surf and romance collide in “Love in Paradise: The Caribbean, A 90 Days Story,” premiering on discovery+ on Sunday, July 18. The series follows four Americans and their Caribbean love interests.

“Transnational” launches Thursday, June 24 across VICE’s YouTube and social media platforms. The newsmagazine will be hosted by trans correspondents, who explore issues affection trans communities around the world.

COMING UP

All 84 episodes of “LA Ink,” starring Kat Von D, are coming to AXS TV. The tattoo artist reality series will be added to the network’s “Sunday Night Rocks” lineup beginning Sunday, July 11 at 9p.

“The Old Bull,” a story about a grandson granting his dying grandmother’s request, serves as the centerpiece of Sportsman Channel’s Father’s Day Marathon Special. The network’s salute to dads begins Saturday, June 19 at 7p.

BBC Select premieres documentary “The Black American Fight for Freedom” on Thursday, July 1. The film explores the struggle for a fair system in education, housing and criminal justice since the Civil Rights Act in America.

Hallmark Movies & Mysteries’ “To Catch a Spy” premieres on Sunday, June 20 at 8p.

Disney+ documentary film “Wolfgang” makes its debut Friday, June 25, following the path and career of chef Wolfang Puck.

WORLD Channel premieres “Jack & Yaya,” on Tuesday, June 22. The doc explores the journey of two transgender individuals who grew up next door to one another in New Jersey.

For the upcoming Juneteenth holiday, BNC (Black News Channel) will run on-air, multi-day coverage from locations across the nation, host a day of service and more to highlight the holiday’s historical significance. BNC is also partnering with local Black-owned businesses to host a community festival in the Castleberry Hill neighborhood of Atlanta. Sharon Reed and Mike Hill of “Start Your Day with Sharon and Mike” morning show will broadcast live from the event.

Smithsonian Channel will air a series of original video essays to commemorate Juneteenth. The essays are from prominent and emerging writers, artists, activists, community leaders and teachers reflecting on Juneteenth and how the consequential moment in American history deeply resonates today.

Magellan TV will launch a curated playlist for Juneteenth on Friday, June 18, featuring a range of documentaries and docu-series celebrating the day. Two titles, “Monumental Crossroads: Heritage, History, And Hate” and “The Fight for the Black Middle Class” will be available without a subscription from June 18-20.

Amazon Studio’s released an Inclusion Policy that extends its commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity for its content and productions, as well as a playbook with guidelines for its collaborators in the creative community.

Spotify has launched live-audio app Greenroom, giving creators a new way to connect with their audience and borrowing a page from audio-chat app Clubhouse. Spotify also has plans to start a Spotify Creator Fund designed to pay live creators for their work, later this summer. “Spotify Greenroom,” the new name for Locker Room -which was acquired in March – was announced this week. “Since bringing the Locker Room app into the fold, we’ve been working to expand its capabilities, with the goal of creating live audio experience that will delight creators and listeners everywhere,” said Spotify.

CBS Reality commissioned two locally produced original series in Poland: “Criminal Investigations in Communist Poland” and Season 2 of “Inspector Biskupska’s Crime Files.” Both will debut later this year.

Omens Studios is bringing new preschool dinosaur adventureEddy and the Ecosaurs” to the international marketplace, launching at Annecy this week. The ECO-based animated series is aimed at kids age 5 to 8.

9 Story Distribution acquired global distribution rights to “Circle Square.” The new animated series was created by The Brother McLeod (“Quiff and Boot”).

Fuse Media secured content licensing deals with rlaxxTV and MT. It continues the multiplatform entertainment company’s expansion into the global media marketplace.
