Freeform’s most-watched series ever, “Cruel Summer,” was renewed for a second season ahead of last night’s first season finale. No word yet as to whether the Jessica Biel-executive produced series will return with a new story and the same actors and characters, or feature an entirely new cast.
Trevor Noah is taking a lengthy break from The Daily Show, beginning Friday, June 18. The show is set to return on September 13, with Comedy Central promising that it will have a “brand new look and feel.”
The cancellation of NBC series “Manifest” prompted a strong online reaction from the show’s fans, cast and creator. Series creator Jeff Rake told fans he is hoping to find a new home for the series, adding that viewers “deserve an ending” to the story that tracks the lives of the passengers and crew of the once missing Montego Air Flight 828.
The CW announced premiere dates for the bulk of its new and returning series. Joining the network’s lineup in October are “Legends of The Hidden Temple,” debuting October 10 at 8p, and “4400,” bowing October 25 at 9p. The fall schedule begins with a new season of “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” at 8p on Friday, October 1. “Nancy Drew” returns on Friday, October 8 at 9p. “The Blacklist” is losing a key cast member. Deadline reports that Megan Boone, the female lead opposite James Spader, is exiting the NBC series. The actress will make her last appearance as a series regular in the show’s upcoming Season 8 finale.

Showtime picked up drama series “American Gigolo,” starring Jon Bernthal (“Ford v Ferrari,” “The Walking Dead”), and written and directed by David Hollander (“Ray Donovan”). Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the original film, will serve as executive producer along with Jonathan Littman and KristieAnne Reed.
Production has begun on a third season of Telemundo’s “La Reina del Sur,” starring Kate del Castillo. The action kicks off in Bolivia, one of six countries featured in the new season. Pepe Rapazote (“Queen of the South,” “Shameless”) joins the cast for the show’s third installment.
Disney+ has greenlit limited musical series “Beauty and the Beast” (wt) from Disney Branded Television and ABC Signature. The eight-episode prequel to the 2017 film will star Luke Evans (“The Alienist”) and Gosh Gad (“Frozen 2”) reprising their roles of Gaston and LeFou. The project is developed, executive-produced and written by Gad, Edward Kitsis and Aama Horowitz (“Once Upon a Time”), with each serving as a co-showrunner.
Discovery+ will deliver surprise bedroom makeovers to teens via a new home series with Marsai Martin (“black-ish”). The actress will serve as EP on the eight-episode series and lead the design team that creates the renovations for peer-nominated youth who make a positive impact on their communities.
Bunim/Murray Productions (BMP) has signed actress/comedian Amanda Seales (“Insecure”) and her Smart, Funny & Black production company to its first-ever Residency deal. Seals will develop, produce and potentially star in scripted and unscripted series with the Banijay-owned studio. The first project, scripted series “Amanda Seales Is Difficult,” is being pitched to potential platforms.
Susannah Grant, writer of “Erin Brockovich” and co-creator of Netflix true-crime series “Unbelievable,” has signed a first-look TV deal with Lionsgate. Grant will be tasked with creating and producing scripted shows across streaming, cable and broadcast.
Casting notes: Diandra Lyle (“American Woman,” “Moonbase 8”) has been upped to series regular on Season 2 of Disney Channel’s Secrets of Sulphur Springs, and Dane DeHaan has joined the cast of the HBO Max’s “The Staircase.”

Chefs, restaurant critics, cookbook authors and accomplished home cooks vie to win $50,000 in the new Food Network show “Money Hungry.” Hosted by Kal Penn, the five-episode series bows Sunday, July 25 at 10p.
“First Wives Club” debuts its second season on Thursday, July 15 on BET+. The pressure is on Jill Scott, Michelle Buteau, Ryan Michelle Bathe, Michelle Mitchenor, RonReaco Lee and Mark Tallman as they dive into new jobs and loves, rekindling a marriage, and welcoming a new friend (Mitchenor) into the clique.
“Mysteries of Mental Illness” bows on PBS Tuesday, June 22 and Wednesday, June 23 (check local listings). The four-episode docu-series aims to bust the stigma surrounding mental illness. Each episode features portraits of individuals sharing their personal stories, and insight from prominent experts.
AXS TV debuts new original music documentary “If These Walls Could Rock” on Wednesday, July 7 at 8:30p. Each 30-minute episode takes viewers on a journey through the country’s iconic music venues.

Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters refused Facebook’s top dollar offer to use the 1979 classic, Another Brick in the Wall Part 2, in an Instagram ad. The musician had heated words for the site’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg, noting that “this is an insidious movement of them to take over absolutely everything. Waters added, “I will not be a party to this bullsh**, Zuckerberg.”
YouTube TV has started alerting customers about the launch of an optional 4K content add-on and offering them a free Chromecast or TiVo device. The streamer sent emails to subscribers, noting that they wanted to ensure their “loyal YouTube TV members have a great watch experience (including the ability to watch 4K content on our optional new add-on service coming soon!)”.
TiVo inked a new “Master Services Agreement” with National Cable Television Cooperative to preserve MobiTV’s deal with the organization. The pact gives NCTC members the opportunity to continue receiving the MobiTV IPTV service and covers TiVo’s implementation and management of the IPTV service that it recently acquired from MobiTV.

FOX News Audio has teamed with Apple Podcasts Subscriptions to launch subscription-based content channel FOX News Podcasts+. The platform will offer exclusive content along with commercial-free episodes of the FOX News Podcast portfolio, as well as commercial-free podcast versions of “FOX News Sunday,” and FOX News Radio’s “The Brian Kilmeade Show,” “FOX Across America with Jimmy Faila” and “The Guy Benson Show.”

James Fox and Dom Waugh will join ITV Studios later this year to launch Rollercoaster Television. The new entertainment label will create and produce new formats for the UK and global markets.
APC Kids secured a deal with Super RTL (Germany) through Zephyr Animation to co-develop Lana Longbeard. The new 2D animated fantasy/adventure comedy series targets 6-to-9-year-olds.
XTR’s global streaming platform Documentary+ announced a new initiative to share viewership data directly with filmmakers. Filmmakers will be able to request reports about performance and viewing data of their films on the platform including insights like top cities, age group, gender identity and related films being streamed on Documentary+.
BiggerStage and FOX Alternative Entertainment have teamed to co-produce “The Big Deal” for Ireland’s Virgin Media Television. Six hour-long episodes of the variety competition series are set to bow this fall.

Most of syndication lost ground in the session ending June 6, the week that began with Memorial Day. “Family Feud” (5.4 Live+SD national Nielsen rating, unchanged from the week before) was one of the few big shows to avoid the downturn, dominating the game show category since the week beginning April 19. “Jeopardy” (4.9, down 4%) with host Mayim Bialik and “Wheel of Fortune” (4.7, down 2%) both declined.
On the daytime talker front, “Live With Kelly and Ryan” (1.7, steady) remained #1. The show has been first or tied for first 13 times in the last 14 weeks. Reruns of “Dr. Phil” (1.5, down 6%) took second.
BET’s Wednesday lineup, featuring dynamic women, scored ratings success with 2.5 million Total Viewers P2+ watching the premiere and encore telecasts of “Tyler Perry’s Sistas” season 3 and new original series, “BET Presents The Encore.” Over 1.4 million Total Viewers P2+ tuned in to “Sistas,” which scored a .845 P18-49 rating on Live+3D (on BET and BET Her). The show continued its stronghold position as the #1 scripted series on cable for African Americans P18-49, two years in a row.
