Former ABC News chief James Goldston will produce the January 6 Committee Hearing Special, which airs Thursday, June 9 at 8p across networks including ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and MSNBC. The hearing won’t be found on Fox News Channel, which is sitting out coverage. Instead, the network will air its usual primetime lineup of shows featuring Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham.

Andrew Garfield, Laurence Fishburne, Nathan Lane, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Bowen Yang and both Paris and Prince Jackson, the children of “MJ” subject Michael Jackson, will present at the 75th annual Tony Awards on Sunday, June 12. The four-hour event begins at 7p with “The Tony Awards: Act One” streaming on Paramount+, hosted by Darren Criss and Julianne Hough. The awards, hosted by Ariana DeBose, follow at 8p and will air on CBS and Paramount+.

“Hacks,” in the entertainment category, and “My Name is Pauli Murray,” in the documentary category were among 2022 Peabody winners announced during the awards’ second round yesterday. The New York Times’ “Day of Rage: How Trump Supporters Took the U.S. Capitol” won in the news category alongside PBS NewsHour’s January 6th reporting. “Philly D.A.,” presented by Kevin Bacon; “Sort Of,” presented by Tan France; and “NBC Bay Area: The Moms of Magnolia Street” and “No Man’s Land: Fighting for Fatherhood in a Broken System,” presented by H.E.R., were among other winners.

Spectrum Originals is benching “Long Slow Exhale.” The drama series set in the world of women’s college basketball won’t be back on the service for a second season, a decision that comes a month and a half after the series starring Rose Rollins and Josh Lucas ended its first season.

“Sesame Street: The Musical,” featuring Elmo, Cookie Monster, Bert, Ernie, Oscar the Grouch and pals, will open Off Broadway this fall, producers Rockefeller Productions and Sesame Workshop announced.

Hitting the road: Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle will perform a one-off, joint stand-up gig at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday, September 3. As well as sharing a love of comedy, the two also were both recently attacked on stage in separate incidents: Rock was slapped by Will Smith during the Oscars; Chappelle was attacked by a man who rushed on stage during his Netflix Is A Joke festival performance.

Animee hub Crunchyroll is bringing its Anime Expo to the Los Angeles Convention Center July 1-4, the first since it merged with Funimation. Event will feature panels, interactive activations, world premiere screenings, exclusive merch and more.

Apple Studios is acquiring “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski’s Formula One racing film starring Brad Pitt. Pitt will play a driver who comes out of retirement to compete alongside a rookie against the greats of his sport in the still-untitled project. Ehren Kruger (“Top Gun: Maverick”) penned the script, and Kosinski will produce with Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman of Jerry Bruckheimer Films (“Top Gun: Maverick”), seven-time Formula One champion Sir Lewis Hamilton and Plan B, with Copper CEO Penni Thow serving as an exec producer.

“Ghosts” showrunners and exec producers Joe Port and Joe Wiseman inked a three-year overall deal with CBS Studios. The comedy series, which Port and Wiseman developed for CBS based on the British series of the same name, ranked as the top new series of the 2021-22 season and landed as the No. 1 comedy on Paramount+, which recently became its exclusive streaming home.

Courtney White has found her new home. The former Food Network president and and GM of HGTV and Food is teaming with Brent Montgomery and Jimmy Kimmel’s Wheelhouse on a joint venture focused on food, home and lifestyle. Butternut will create original content for all platforms, working with a range of established, emerging and home-grown talent. White will serve as president of Butternut and collaborate across all Wheelhouse divisions.

Magilla Entertainment, the unscripted producer behind reality series including Discovery’s “Moonshiners” franchise and HGTV’s “Beachfront Bargain Hunt,” is prepping a new, yet-to-be named food and travel series rooted in “seasonality” and fronted by Ana Hito. Each episode will follow Hito to a new corner of the world, where she’ll explore its unique cultures.

HBO Max renewed “Tokyo Vice” for a second season. From Endeavor Content and Japan pay TV broadcaster WOWOW, crime drama series is loosely inspired by American journalist Jake Adelstein’s non-fiction, first-hand account of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police beat. Season 1 debuted in April.

HBO, Smokehouse Pictures and Sports Illustrated Studios/101 Studios are jointly producing a feature documentary based on Sports Illustrated’s cover story of the alleged sex abuse scandal at Ohio State University that spanned three decades. The film, produced by George Clooney and Grant Heslov of Smokehouse Pictures and David C. Glasser of 101 Studios, will debut on HBO and be available to stream on HBO Max.

Religion of Sports, the media production company founded by Tom Brady, Michael Strahan and Gotham Chopra, raised $50 million in a Series B funding round led by Shamrock Capital. The company is behind docs “ Kobe Bryant’s Muse” and “Man in the Arena,” which profiles Brady, and recently expanded into scripted film, TV and audio including a scripted and podcast deal with Skydance Sports.

Banijay Kids and Family optioned picture book “Arnold the Super-ish Hero” from children’s publisher Kids Can Press to develop a preschool series. Written by Heather Tekavec and illustrated by Guillaume Perreault, story follows a boy who helps out at his family’s superhero business and discovers the ultimate superpower is kindness.

Rob McElhenney is in on the launch of entertainment tech company Adim, which seeks to make it easier for creators to connect, collaborate and own a greater share in the content they create. Adim is co-founded by McElhenney, Chase Rosenblatt, Melissa Kaspers, Spencer Marell and Richard Rosenblatt.

NEW + RETURNING SERIES

Season 2 of Lupita Nyong’o-voiced YouTube Originals kids series “Super Sema” is set to debut Friday, June 17. YouTube dropped a trailer for the series, which follows a young African girl, a STEAM whiz, who with her friends embarks in all kinds of world-changing adventures.

Amazon Prime Video dropped the trailer for its first original Tamil series, “Suzhal – The Vortex,” which debuts on Friday, June 17. Written and created by duo Pushkar and Gayatri, eight-ep investigative thriller follows events that wreak havoc in a small industrial town following the disappearance of a schoolgirl.

The third and final season of “Motherland: Fort Salem” bows Tuesday, June 21 at 10p on Freeform, and the following day on Hulu. The end of season 2 left Abigail, Tally, Raelle and Scylla fugitives on the run. Now without a military nor a home, they seek protection, although laying low and staying out of trouble has never been their strong suit.

“Top Gear” returns to BBC America on Thursday, July 14 at 10p, with hosts Freddie Flintoff, Chris Harris and Paddy McGuinness back for their sixth season at the wheel. Five-ep season will see the trio head on a motorsport mission to Florida.

Season 2 of “Bridge & Tunnel” debuts on Epix on Sunday, July 10 at 10p. Written, directed, produced and starring Edward Burns, the second round of the six-ep romantic comedy set in the early ‘80s opens in the summer of 1981. It’s exactly one year after the events of the prior season, and Jimmy, Jill and the rest of the gang, no longer tethered to the suburbs, have one foot in Manhattan and are ready for a magical summer.

Back at Amazon, the series adaptation of “A League of Its Own” got a premiere date of Friday, August 12. A reboot of the 1992 Penny Marshall film about the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, series from Sony Pictures TV follows a team of new characters who embody a generation of women who dreamed of playing pro baseball.

Syndicated true crime series “iCrime With Elizabeth Vargas” will air in syndication in 95 percent of the country when it debuts Monday, September 12. From Scott Sternberg Productions and Trifecta Entertainment & Media, series will air Monday through Friday and feature the Peabody- and Emmy-winning journalist taking a modern look at crime—through the lens of smartphones. The show will feature clips of actual crimes captured on smartphone video by witnesses, as well as interviews between Vargas and victims, bystanders, law enforcement and the amateur photographers.

“American Masters – Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road” premieres nationwide Tuesday, June 14 at 9p on PBS.

“Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski’s next film “Spiderhead” barrels onto Netflix Friday, June 17, and the streamer released a new clip featuring stars Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller during a panel for Netflix’s Geeked Out Festival. Based on the George Saunders short story, “Spiderhead” follows a visionary running a correctional facility that allows its inmates to shorten their sentences by participating in drug trials for mind-altering substances.

A new one-hour movie, “Daniel Visits a New Neighborhood,” will premiere on PBS Kids stations on Monday, June 20. Viewers can accompany Daniel and his mom as they go on a trip to visit Mom Tiger’s friend and family, Daniel’s first time venturing out of the Neighborhood of Make-Believe.

MTV’s “Teen Mom: Young & Pregnant” returns for a new season Tuesday, June 28 at 9p as a new group of young moms navigate the highs and lows of parenthood.

Animated film “The Sea Beast” premieres Friday, July 8 on Netflix, which dropped a trailer and official poster. Directed by Chris Williams, the action takes places in an era when terrifying beasts roamed the seas and monster hunters were celebrated heroes—none more so than the great Jacob Holland. But when young Maisie Brumble stows away on his fabled ship, Holland is saddled with an unexpected ally.

Amazon unveiled the trailer for dramedy “Don’t Make Me Go,” which it will debut Friday, July 15, after the film’s world premiere June 13 at the Tribeca Film Fest. From director Hannah Marks, pic centers on a single father Max (John Cho) who, upon discovering he has a terminal disease, attempts to cram all the years of love and support he will miss with his teenage daughter Wally (Mia Isaac) into an epic road trip.

ADVERTISING & BRAND

AT&T finalized the sale of its ad-tech business Xandr to Microsoft. The sale, first announced in December, brings Xandr’s full ad-tech stack including demand- and sell-side platforms, its ad server and other features to Microsoft’s connected TV ad business. Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, though reports have put the price tag at $1 billion.

Fox, NBCUniversal, Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery—the companies that own ad tech firm OpenAP—are hosting a summit Thursday, June 23 at Cannes Lions where they’ll aim to convince advertisers to move their dollars to new kinds of measurement technologies beyond Nielsen.

Ad sales and tech firm Ampersand is expanding its relationships with Charter, Comcast, Cox and Altice by launching incremental reach capabilities powered by its AND Platform. Incremental reach enables its clients to use the MVPDs’ aggregated viewership insights to target households that have been unexposed or under-exposed to a national TV campaign or to target specific regions with a multi-DMA heavy-up.

TECH TALK

TikTok launched new feature TikTok Avatars, which enables users to customize their avatar from a swath of hairstyles, makeup, outfits, accessories and voice styles. TikTokers can also add a miniature version to their videos by shrinking down the avatar down and placing it anywhere on the screen.

Fuse Group acquired Madrid-based visual effects firm El Ranchito, known for its work on “The Mandalorian,” “Game of Thrones” and “Stranger Things.” It’s the latest tech acquisition for the parent company of FuseFX, Folks and Rising Sun Pictures as it drives to be a full-service provider of VFX services in media markets around the globe.

Sam Waterston will be back as DA Jack McCoy on “Law & Order‘s” upcoming 22nd season on NBC, extending his series run to 18 seasons and becoming its longest-tenured cast member… Chloe Sevigny joined the cast of “Poker Face,” Peacock’s 10-episode mystery drama series starring Natasha Lyonne… Carol Burnett boarded Apple comedy series “Mrs. American Pie.”

GOING GLOBAL

Almost one-third of content available to Netflix’s European subscribers now hails from the continent, according to new research conducted as quota regulations that push for local original content kick in. An Ampere Analysis study suggests the streamer is at or above the 30 percent European content in almost all European markets, though UK, Ireland and France fall slightly below the mark.

ITV greenlit a drag special that will see celebrities competing to be crowned queen and Spice Girl Mel C, comedian Rob Beckett and drag superstar Courtney Act on the judging panel for the 90-minute primetime special “Queens for the Night,” from producer Tuesday’s Child.

UK network Channel 4 commissioned a second season of Scottish prison drama “Screw,” from “Killing Eve” writer Rob Williams and STV Studios. Series follows a team of embattled prison officers.

Season 4 of “Stranger Things” is setting more records at Netflix and is on track to become the streamer’s most watched English language series. The new season logged 335.01 million hours viewed during its first full week of release, which renders it No. 3 on Netflix’s all-time list for English language series with 621.80 million hours viewed in 10 days, according to the service. Only “Bridgerton” seasons 2 and 1, respectively, are ahead. For the week of May 30-June 5, volume 1 of the new season became the most watched season of English-language TV in a single week on Netflix.

Hallmark Channel launched its annual Summer Nights promo last weekend with a splash, featuring original movie premiere “Hidden Gems,” which was the No. 1 most-watched entertainment cable program of the day among Households, W18+, W25-54 and Total Viewers, as well as program of the week among W18+.

“Love Island” season 8 made its debut in the UK on Monday night with an average of 2.4 million viewers on ITV2. The 90-minute ep introduced the 11 initial season stars.
