“To those whose trust I’ve lost, I will fight like hell to win it back,” CNN Worldwide Chairman and CEO Chris Licht told staffers on Monday, following the publication of a profile of him in The Atlantic titled, “Inside the Meltdown at CNN.” While ratings have dropped and some of Licht’s programming changes haven’t proven successful, MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” anchor Joe Scarborough defended his former producer, noting, “The suggestion that somehow CNN was like Shangri La and this powerhouse until Chris Licht walked through the doors kind of denies everything that happened over the past decade…. That’s just bad reporting.”
A Global Day of Solidarity is slated for June 14 in support of the Writers Guild of America’s striking members. The protest will take place at London’s Leicester Square, and include the Writers Guild of Great Britain, the International Affiliation of Writers Guilds and the Federation of Screenwriters in Europe.
Showtime removed an episode of “Vice” that reported on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ experience as a U.S. Navy lawyer at the Guantanamo Bay detention center, including his response to whether he witnessed the torture of prisoners. The episode, scheduled to air May 28, was replaced with a repeat. Why the change? “As with all current affairs programming there can be scheduling changes, and we are very much still in discussion about the scheduling of this episode,” a Vice spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter.
Chuck Todd is leaving NBC’s “Meet the Press. “I’ve watched too many friends and family let work consume them before it was too late,” he told viewers. Taking his place in the moderator’s seat will be his frequent fill-in, Kristen Welker.
TV ads viewed grew in the 2022-23 season on daytime TV, according to a report from iSpot. Key finding include:
· From Sept. 5, 2022-May 29, 2023, there were 860.3 billion household TV ad impressions delivered during daytime on linear TV (up 1.3% year-over-year).
· ABC, CBS and NBC delivered 9.5% more daytime TV ad impressions year-over-year.
· Daytime programming accounted for 17.7% of all household TV ad impressions on linear TV; second only to primetime (25%).
· General news & information shows delivered 15% more daytime TV ad impressions YoY, helping power increases for both broadcast nets and cable news.
· “The Price Is Right” was the top program in daytime, with 3.53% of household TV ad impressions (the show also delivered 6% more impressions YoY despite 2% fewer ad minutes).

A reboot of “Extreme Home Makeover: Home Edition” is in development at ABC, where it ran from 2004-12. In addition to contractors and designers making a new home for deserving families, The Home Edit creators Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin will work with families to edit their belongings. The series, produced by Endemol Shine North America and Hello Sunshine in association with Walt Disney Television Alternative, also had a reboot in 2020 on HGTV.
Speaking of, HGTV has renewed “Fixer to Fabulous” for a fifth season, and ordered spinoff “Fixer to Fabulous: Italiano.” Both series star Dave and Jenny Marrs. “Dave and Jenny’s loyal fan base comes back season after season for their incredible Bentonville overhauls,” said Loren Ruch, Head of Content at HGTV. “We can’t wait to showcase the Marrs as their fans have never seen them before, completely out of their element for a remarkable renovation set in the stunning Tuscan countryside.”
“Law & Order” is getting another spinoff, this time written by, produced by and starring Canadians. “The timeless appeal of the cases explored in the globally successful Law & Order franchise continue to draw in Citytv audiences week after week,” said Hayden Mindell, SVP of Television, Rogers Sports & Media. “We’re thrilled to be in partnership with Lark Productions and Cameron Pictures Inc., to bring Canadian stories to this iconic format.” The series is slated to debut in spring 2024.
“The Fifty” (Les Cinquante) is being adapted for the US Hispanic market. Produced by EndemolShine Boomdog for Telemundo, it will be the first international version of the reality competition created by Banijay Productions France.
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
“My Adventures with Superman” premieres Thursday, July 6 at midnight on Adult Swim. The animated series is a coming-of-age story about Clark Kent, Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen.
“Big Freedia Means Business,” starring the Queen of Bounce, debuts Wednesday, June 7 at 9p on Fuse.
FOX First Run will launch “Person, Place, or Thing” in fall 2023. The weekday game show had a limited run in the summer of 2022, and is sold in 161 US markets from various station groups, including Sinclair, Nexstar, Gray, Scripps and Tegna. Hosted by Melissa Peterman, “Person, Place, or Thing” is has players asking “yes” or “no” questions to correctly determine the identity of a person, place, or thing.
Law&Crime struck a YouTube partnership for “Annie Elise x 10 to Life,” available to view on Law&Crime’s channel. This partnership is part of a larger effort on Law&Crime’s behalf to collaborate with creators who deliver fresh takes on high-profile cases.

Twitter counted $88 million in US ad revenue from April 1 to the first week in May, 59% below the same period in 2022, according to a NY Times report. An internal document cited by the Times says the company projects at least a 56% drop every week in June.
Spotify is cutting 2% of its workforce, or about 200 jobs. “We are expanding our partnership efforts with leading podcasters from across the globe with a tailored approach optimized for each show and creator,” said Sahar Elhabashi, VP, Head of Podcast Business, in a blog post. “This fundamental pivot from a more uniform proposition will allow us to support the creator community better. However, doing so requires adapting.” Spotify is combining Parcast and Gimlet into Spotify Studios, which will continue to produce original series.
Apple unveiled Vision Pro, a mixed-reality wearable computer that will be available early next year. At its annual software conference, CEO Tim Cook showed the device in a demo video. “It’s the first product you look through, and not at,” said Cook. “You can see, hear, and act with digital content just like it’s in your physical space. You’re no longer limited by a display.” Price tag: $3499.
Streaming technology company Brightcove has introduced Ad Insights, a solution that leverages advanced machine learning models and proprietary metrics to provide customers with detailed analytics and insights that portray viewer tolerance for ads, enabling them to optimize their ad load without disrupting the audience experience and retention. By receiving a complete picture of their ad performance, customers can make informed ad frequency and duration decisions based on first-party data integrated across all Brightcove-powered experiences to maximize revenue while upholding an engaging viewer experience.
Starting in late 2023, Microsoft will no longer support virtual assistant Cortana in Windows as a standalone app, said the company in a blog post. Users were directed to Voice Access in Windows 1; the new AI-powered Bing; and Microsoft 365 Copilot. The change only impacts Cortana in Windows.

Documentary “The Stroll,” following transgender sex workers in NYC’s pre-gentrified Meatpacking District, premieres Wednesday, June 21 at 9p on HBO.
Another doc timed to Pride Month, “Mama Bears,” chronicles the journeys of Christian mothers in a network of women who fight for the rights of their LGBTQ+ children, losing family and friends in the process. The “Independent Lens” segment premieres Tuesday, June 20 at 10p on PBS (check local listings).
“Independent Lens” has also acquired new feature documentary “One with the Whale,” which spotlights a Siberian Yupik community, located on a small ice-covered island in the Bering Sea, that has recently found itself in the crosshairs of climate change and environmental racism. Premiere date is TBD.
“La Usurpadora, The Musical,” a musical adaptation of the hit telenovela, arrives on ViX on Thursday, June 15. The film tells the tale of two identical twin sisters who were separated at birth, one poor and decent, the other rich and awful.

Sports streamer FloSports has acquired DirectAthletics, focused on timed sports event registration and data management. DirectAthletics’ properties, combined with those of FloTrack and previously-acquired MileSplit, create a destination for fans and participants, forming the largest database of Track & Field videos, meet coverage, results, and rankings in North America.
FOX Sports announced the voices behind its first-ever presentation of the Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA Bets. The network prepares for dual-screen coverage on Saturday, June 10 beginning at 4p with “Belmont Day on Fox.” Prerace show coverage is anchored by Curt Menefee, trainer Tom Amoss and Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, the last to claim a Triple Crown win.
Also coming up on FOX Sports is the UEFA Nations League Finals 2023. Coverage kicks off Wednesday, June 14 FS1 begins at 2:30p for the first Semifinal match between Netherlands and Croatia. The second Semifinal match between Spain and Italy on Thursday, June 15, also features a 2:30p start on FS1. The two winning teams from each Semifinal match will meet in the UEFA Nations League Finals on Sunday, June 18, with live coverage commencing at 2p on FOX.
Strike Ten Entertainment and the Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America in partnership with Equity Sports Partners announced the launch of Bowling Center TV, a DOOH television network distributed across a bowling centers in the United States. Technology partners include Cisco and Samsung, as well as funding partner Digital Alpha.

Wag Entertainment is ramping up its true crime content with several new series and a feature documentary in production for Channel 5 and 5STAR. Among them: “Dying for Revenge,” which recounts stories of crimes committed as an act of revenge.
Abacus Media Rights has signed a UK all rights deal with Tull Stories for documentary “Savage Waters,” produced by France-based independent production company Whipped Sea.
Banijay Kids & Family announced CGI action comedy “Shasha & Milo,” co-produced by Zodiak Kids & Family France and South Korean studio Pingo Entertainment, set to launch in Korea with public broadcaster EBS.
DCD Rights has sold multiple hours of programming across both scripted and unscripted to a number of within the CEE region, among them 72 hours of factual programming across titles such as “Scottish Islands With Ben Fogle,” and “James Martin’s Great British Adventure.”
Indian animation studio 88 Pictures announced the opening of its first international office set for Toronto. With the move, 88 Pictures aims to forge newer global partnerships and take on international projects.
9 Story Distribution has secured a number of sales for live-action series “A Kind of Spark,” based on the book by neurodivergent author Elle McNicoll. The is the first project to be put into production from 9 Story’s first-look deal with publishing company Knights Of, which focuses on improving inclusivity in children’s books.
Media Ranch announced six option deals, including for “Round Table” in Europe in four countries. Two other Media Ranch original formats were optioned in the US.
